How long has it been since you last went to church?

Hi everyone,
This has been on my mind lately, and I’m genuinely curious to hear how others feel.
I’ve noticed that many Christians I know — including myself sometimes — have gradually stopped going to church regularly. For some, it’s the busyness of life, for others, maybe it’s disappointment, change of priorities, or simply drifting away without realising.
Life can get so full — work, parenting, everything — and sometimes, faith quietly slips into the background. It’s not always intentional, but suddenly we realise: it’s been weeks, months, maybe years since we last stepped into a church.
I wanted to ask:
How long has it been since you last went to church?
What made you stop, if you did? Or what’s helped you stay connected?
I’m not here to judge at all — I’d just love to open an honest conversation and hear different experiences.
Thank you for reading. 😊

Christmas Day. Also went to the midnight mass on Christmas Eve, and the carol service a couple of days before that.

Last Sunday. But it is a recent thing that I’ve started attending weekly. There are a few people my age there, but mainly elderly people.

Last time I stepped inside a church was about 5 years ago but my DH and DS went to mass this evening.

Monday evensong at my cathedral. I will go again tomorrow.

Dontcallmescarface · 05/07/2025 20:30

Other than weddings/christianing/funeral, not since I left primary school nearly 50 years ago. I've never believed in God and once compulsory church going was over I've not felt the need or inclination to go again.

TheCurious0range · 05/07/2025 20:33

Mother's day. Tbh at this point I'm high days and holidays, I would also consider myself agnostic rather than a proper Christian, I was raised CoE and DS has taken an interest in church and the Bible over the last year or so which made me renew efforts as while I'm not going to impose any beliefs or absence of them I will support him to explore his

I was "in" a church this week, and lit a candle for someone who is ill. But it's been several years since I went "to" church.

Denimrules · 05/07/2025 20:35

2 weeks, DS has been quite ill so I haven't been able to go

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 05/07/2025 20:37

Yesterday evening for choir practice. 😁
Back tomorrow morning.

olympicsrock · 05/07/2025 20:39

I don’t go to church any more. I was raised as catholic went to church regularly, got married in a church and had my sons christened.
I used to go for the community and hymns . Post Covid I don’t like to be in busy places and to be honest I’ve known for a while that I don’t believe in god so it’s a bit pointless.

MargaretThursday · 05/07/2025 20:39

Yesterday.

willowpatternchina · 05/07/2025 20:40

Last Sunday. We have had a funny relationship with church recently as we had a change of leadership at the church we were with for 15 years and it didn’t really work for us so after a lot of soul searching we made the decision to leave.

DD (14) still goes to our old church and DS (16) goes nowhere. DH and I have started attending another church. It’s not great but I feel better going somewhere rather than nowhere if that makes sense and we have been made very welcome.

Enko · 05/07/2025 20:40

Mothering sunday. I think it was. I got flowers due to something to do w mothers... i dont go often anymore. After we moved I havent found a church I have gelled with.

HenDoNot · 05/07/2025 20:43

Other than a recent funeral, probably about 5 years ago for DS' school leavers mass.

Bridport · 05/07/2025 20:48

I go once a year to the carols by candlelight.

MalagaNights · 05/07/2025 20:53

This morning.
Will go again tomorrow.

That's unusual. I usually only go once a week.

Ifailed · 05/07/2025 21:10

1995, my Dad's funeral.

MrsMariaReynolds · 05/07/2025 21:12

A few hours ago, for evening Mass.

BuffetTheDietSlayer · 05/07/2025 21:12

When’s the last time you wrote a post without using AI, OP?

Darlingstarlings · 05/07/2025 21:17

I'm Catholic so go every Sunday but I will try to go during the week if I can. I also went today as I do the first Saturday's for the last few year.

DrJump · 05/07/2025 21:17

Can not remember the last time. However have started listening to the Christian radio station. Mainly because there is virtually no adds and the music is up lifting. There was even a song "I found Jesus in a parking lot" I have wondered if I was having a conversion but realised I don't believe in God and for an easy family life if I was to find God then Allah would be better.
I have tried to find a Sunday Assembly but I don't think they run anymore.

Sonolanona · 05/07/2025 21:34

For myself ; 35 years ago. I was 32 and until that moment, went every week, raised as a Baptist and baptised as an adult.
Then one day, walked in and thought... there is no evidence of a loving god... if there is one, he/she/it is either oblivious or an arse.
Went home and nothing has changed my mind since!

I did take DS2 for a year or so when he was a teenager and wanted to explore for himself (he has autism hence me taking him) However it was around the time they were voting on gay marriage and when the church was against it... HE asked why his (gay) sister couldn't marry someone she loved... and he never went back.

thenightsky · 05/07/2025 21:36

January 2020. A far too young friend died on NY day. Suddenly.

SheSpeaks · 05/07/2025 21:37

I’ve never been voluntarily. Only ever because I was repeatedly forced to. I guess that will put you off most things.

I do go and look at nice historical buildings so I’m not averse to going inside a church but I have no desire to attend as a congregation.
