How long has it been since you last went to church?

Hi everyone,
This has been on my mind lately, and I’m genuinely curious to hear how others feel.
I’ve noticed that many Christians I know — including myself sometimes — have gradually stopped going to church regularly. For some, it’s the busyness of life, for others, maybe it’s disappointment, change of priorities, or simply drifting away without realising.
Life can get so full — work, parenting, everything — and sometimes, faith quietly slips into the background. It’s not always intentional, but suddenly we realise: it’s been weeks, months, maybe years since we last stepped into a church.
I wanted to ask:
How long has it been since you last went to church?
What made you stop, if you did? Or what’s helped you stay connected?
I’m not here to judge at all — I’d just love to open an honest conversation and hear different experiences.
Thank you for reading. 😊

4 days

Six days, go most weeks but I consider it a regular part of my life plus I have some responsibilities there. However I've drifted away from midweek house group!

It's not essential though, and there are lots of ways of doing faith, worship and fellowship. Attending a badly led church out of duty is probably worse than not going.

A funeral in February last year. Prior to that, probably my brother’s wedding in 2001.

I grew up in an Irish catholic family & was taken to mass every Sunday & holy day until I was 15. Communion, confession, confirmation, catholic schools. The lot. Brother was an altar boy, but I lacked the qualifications for that particular job 🙄.

Then, one Sunday morning I said NO. I simply refused to go. Result : Massive family row. Dad furious. Mum in tears. Grandma kneeling, praying & clutching rosary beads. (Yes, really.) But I knew I no longer believed in any of the bullshit I had been brainwashed with and I knew they couldn’t be seen physically dragging me kicking & screaming into church.

I have only entered churches for weddings & funerals since that day. I politely decline invites to baptisms. Even now, religion is a subject that I can’t have a sensible discussion with my parents about. It just upsets my mum too much.

Twice in the last ten weeks for both PIL funerals. I am not religious and attended purely out of respect for my in laws and to support my husband. I do not pray, do not sing hymns but conducted myself respectfully. I do not however have any respect for the Church who I consider to be one of the most corrupt organisations.

6 days (for a service) but I was at the Church mid week for handbells (which I lead).
I've had a number of breaks from attending over the years - often due to work and family pressures - but have always felt the desire to return.

I'm now beginning training to be a Lay Reader - in my 60s and as a recent (5 yrs) quadruple amputee.

Karatema · 05/07/2025 22:10

I was raised a Baptist but stopped going when one of the better off members of the congregation basically told me I wasn’t “good” enough! I always kept my faith though.
Was married in a CofE church and go to CofE church 4 or 5 times a year depending on church parades.

SummerFrog25 · 05/07/2025 22:23

Only for 'events'. I don't believe, but I love churches.

when I'm away, I always visit churches & light candles for Scarlett & other MN children who died(when MN was much smaller & we mostly knew each other (online).

I live near our local village church & love hearing the bells (Thursdays & Sundays !)

ALinktoHyrule · 05/07/2025 22:25

Last week. On holiday this week. Go every week and love it.

Nanalisa60 · 05/07/2025 22:26

Christmas Eve, then Easter Sunday, going next week to a wedding.

GreenTurtles3 · 05/07/2025 22:30

last month maybe? I don't go weekly but try to go every few weeks. Am planning
on going tomorrow.

Fraudornot · 05/07/2025 22:49

I found Sunday mornings were just not the best time for us as a family and then if I’m truly honest find most services boring and not bringing me any closer to God. I don’t go at all now but would love to meet some Christian women locally to discuss faith with

StarlightLady · 05/07/2025 22:52

Only weddings and funerals. I would not go any other time. Hypocrisy is the 11th comandment.

Ava55 · 05/07/2025 22:56

Try and go weekly, one hour out of modern day life, gives me such a calmness 🙏

buttercupcake · 05/07/2025 22:59

6 days, we go every Sunday.

Perpetuallywondering · 05/07/2025 22:59

Tonight for Evensong. Generally we go weekly on Sunday mornings and DD sings midweek evensong too.

PandaG · 05/07/2025 23:05

6 days ago for the service, yesterday to go to work.

PashaMinaMio · 05/07/2025 23:06

Not for absolutely ages. I used to go regularly. I’ve seriously lapsed.

Im totally useless in the mornings and church on a Sunday is too early for me.

I must try harder because I like a communion service (Cof E) and it’s a key-stone for my week.

drspouse · 05/07/2025 23:08

Last Sunday though I hadn't been for a couple of weeks (I was ill then we were on Scout camp).
We are going tomorrow though DH is away with the car. I've offered the DCs a choice of cycling or bus and they chose cycling. I'll have to make sure we bring a good lock as church is on a fairly dodgy estate (the kind where they have No Horses signs on the grassy areas).

BarBellBarbie · 05/07/2025 23:10

I only go for funerals, weddings etc.

VeryNiceWoman · 05/07/2025 23:16

Thursday evening for “worship night”. Will go tomorrow for Mass & to help with Children’s service beforehand. I go at least once a week.

SlightlyTooMuch · 05/07/2025 23:19

Apart from funerals and weddings, probably in my student days in Oxford in the 1990s. I went to Evensong several times a week, because of world-class choirs singing, sometimes only to me and a couple of canons.

ObliviousCoalmine · 05/07/2025 23:22

A wedding about 2 years ago.

Loadsofmoggies · 05/07/2025 23:24

A few months ago for a funeral and before that a year or so ago for another family reason. Pretty disillusioned with the institution of the Church and don’t miss going regularly.

JohnnyLuLus · 05/07/2025 23:38

I think probably about 8 years ago when my eldest was in the Cubs, and they had a service. I love churches, love the sense of coming together and reflecting on how you live your life, and love choirs. It's the actual "God" bit I struggle with.

ZenNudist · 05/07/2025 23:42

I go every week. Catholic. Love it. So nice to connect with something bigger than my day to day petty concerns. So much sadness in the world. Having faith really is a great blessing and source of hope. Plus I love singing. Roll on tomorrow!
