Supermarkets encouraging waste/obesity?

Globules · 05/07/2025 13:01

I wanted a coffee and a pastry this morning.

I went in Co-op to get them.

It was cheaper to get a coffee, pastry and sandwich than it was to just get a coffee and pastry, due to the meal deal offer.

£4.35 for 2 items
£3.50 for 3 items.

I know this isn't just a Co-op issue.
I love a good deal.
But it's frustrating that supermarkets encourage wasteful consumerism in this way.

Off point but that's a lot of sugar OP

I wasn't talking about meal deals I was talking about offers in Greggs like buy two get two free.

Ok. I've never been in Greggs.

FloofyBird · 05/07/2025 13:32

Yes but they're never in a 2 for 1 for buy two get two free type deal. I wasn't talking about meal deals.

Pre cut tropical fruit is often on a multi buy offer at Asda and Tesco

We have an awful situation in deprived areas, of children who are both obese and suffering from malnutrition. This is because poor quality food is cheap, exemplified by these kinds of offers.

Perfect summary

It’d be great if they offered you to pay for the sandwich say then they could donate it to homeless throughout the day.

There's always at least one homeless person outside our local Tesco - you could probably just donate on the way out!

Flupflup · 05/07/2025 14:07

Globules · 05/07/2025 13:38

Oooh. Now that's worth trying...

Or give the sandwich to another customer or homeless person!

Bridport · 05/07/2025 14:09

I'm part of a litter picking group and these deals in some way explain a lot of the stuff we pick up - half eaten packets of crisps just thrown down, plastic bottles of coke with three quarters of the coke still in it left on park benches. People are taking stuff away from shops that they just don't have the appetite for. It's free - so why not just toss it in the nearest hedge.

MrsEmmelineLucas · 05/07/2025 14:12

Dropping litter pre dates supermarket food deals.

rickyrickygrimes · 05/07/2025 14:16

They will sell whichever format and product is the most profitable for them. That’s it, that’s their only consideration. They don’t care if it’s multipacks or deals or individual items. They don’t care if it’s UPF crap or fresh fruit. They don’t care of you scoff the whole lot, give it to a homeless pertain or if you eat half and bin the rest. They are not there to keep people healthy or even nourished. They are there to make a profit. And often that means selling add much addictive crap to people as possible.

This is an even better option.

The normal homeless man who sits outside this Co-op wasn't there this morning, else I'd have asked him what I could get him.

I know that. I did say it in some way explains it. Dropping half eaten stuff might be exacerbated by the deals.
It's upsetting to see so much waste.

That's on the people who choose to waste it, surely? I don't see why the consumers are absolved of responsibility for littering?

Pinkfluffypencilcase · 05/07/2025 13:23

I wonder if they’d let you pay for the meal deal then leave the sandwich behind. You’d get it cheaper then at least.

I don't see why you can't do this. Or just get a sandwich with a longer date and have another day or give to someone else.

Nobody said the consumers are absolved of responsibility for littering.

The deals create greater opportunity for waste.
The idiots who drop the waste create the litter with additional material they've been provided.

They're the ones littering. The shops just sell the goods. Functioning adults - and most children, know how to dispose of waste.

There are offers on everything, it’s cheaper to buy lots of things as multipacks including toilet roll and fabric softener but you’re not accusing them of encouraging frequent shits or too much laundry.

😂😂
"Frequent shits" - I miss the laughing response emoji, so have 2 other ones!

ChipshopPickledEgg · 05/07/2025 14:38

But you could opt for a fruit pot for your main?
I often use a meal deal for two meals at work - example coffee and protein bar for breckfast and then sushi as main for lunch.
Don't have to be the sandwich.

I don't know if you spend much time picking up other people's litter but I do. The waste and mess is unending and frustrating to me and it's made worse by the fact that people - including the many adults and children who do drop litter - are encouraged to pick up more than they need which they then discard uneaten.

Nchangeo · 05/07/2025 14:49

I can’t believe these comments. Obviously it’s ridiculous

No. They choose to discard it. Not the supermarket. I just hate this lack of responsibility on the individual for choices made.

Bridport · 05/07/2025 14:56

Sigh.

SheilaFentiman · 05/07/2025 14:57

I like this meal deal when I am commuting - coffee and pastry for breakfast then sandwich for lunch (or juice for lunch if I had time for coffee on the train already)

I was getting on a train for an overnight stay. I had no desire to carry a sarnie round for the next 2 days.

This lack of responsibility and blaming others is endemic. I had to deal with a yr8 boy who stole a smartboard remote control and used it in lessons to change the slides etc and completely disrupt learning. His response? "It was the teacher's fault for leaving it on the desk!".
The parent's response "it was the teacher's fault for leaving it on the desk!" 😂😂.
