The first one I clearly remember was the King’s Cross fire in 87 and Lockerbie in 88

Tell me yours

Aberfan.

funnyoldonion · 03/07/2025 23:31

Coming out of my mother’s vagina

Poddingtonpeace · 03/07/2025 23:31

Probably the Cold War. Waking up and being shocked we hadn't all died yet is pretty harsh at primary school.

Tooty78 · 03/07/2025 23:32

Aberfan.

LavenderBlue19 · 03/07/2025 23:32

The King's Cross fire too. I'm 43.

Hadalifeonce · 03/07/2025 23:33

Judiezones · 03/07/2025 23:30

Aberfan.

Me too. Probably because I was a similar age as the victims.

The King's Cross fire too. I'm 43.

Gosh you must have been little then. I’m 47

The Challenger space shuttle

AquaCat93 · 03/07/2025 23:34

Storm of 87. And the Kings Cross fire. My Dad was in London that day. Also famine in Africa. AIDS.

ILikeFreesias · 03/07/2025 23:34

Mountbattens boat being blown up. I’m 53

user1471530109 · 03/07/2025 23:34

Lockerbie. But too young to understand (but do remember it. Or maybe the news reports years later?).

Dunblane. That still haunts me to be honest. I remember sobbing watching the news. I was 15.

suburberphobe · 03/07/2025 23:35

John F. Kennedy's asassination.

saltandvinegarchipsticks · 03/07/2025 23:35

I think probably the Bradford City football ground fire.

boysmuminherts · 03/07/2025 23:36

Heysel in 1985, I remember clearly the news reports. I was in Year 5.

forgottenusername · 03/07/2025 23:36

Start of the Falklands war, I was 9 and had no idea where either Argentina or the Falkland islands were, and thought they were off the top of Scotland...

everythingthelighttouches · 03/07/2025 23:36

KX
(I’m 45)

I think it’s because my mum would mention it whenever we went down to London (quite a lot) and tell us we had to be very careful on escalators.

she is a big worrier.

givingitupok · 03/07/2025 23:36

The Andra Pradesh Cyclone. I was 5 and have family in India. Not close but I remember being worried as a child.

About six I guess? I feel like I saw it on Newsround. But we lived on the outskirts of London and used Kings Cross a lot, so it probably was more relevant for me (and my parents) than most.

CassieAusten · 03/07/2025 23:37

The Herald of Free Enterprise sinking. It sank on a Friday evening so instead of watching my usual Saturday morning kids' programming I switched on to see news coverage of the ship lying on its side.

Ladamesansmerci · 03/07/2025 23:37

The tsunami in 2004 that hit Indonesia, etc. It was boxing day and I was on holiday. I'd have been 10. It just really sticks in my mind.

I don't remember 9/11 at all!

I do remember Diana dying, but that's not a disaster.

JasonTindallsTan · 03/07/2025 23:37

Hillsborough and Dunblane. I also vividly recall the reporting of the murder of James Bulger.

Nchangeo · 03/07/2025 23:38

Diana, also tragedy more than a disaster but then first public mourning I had seen.

First disaster I can remember - 9/11. Probably not the first but that gulfed everything and I think probably overwrote a few.

SharkBaitOooHaha · 03/07/2025 23:39

I remember the 1987 hurricane really clearly even though I was only 5.
And then Hillsborough. I think the first big news story I remember clearly was Jamie Bulger.

Flatbellyfella · 03/07/2025 23:39

The King dying back in 1952. I was 5 years old.
