I love a documentary that you can only see on YouTube. I’m into 1970s ones atm. Then the algorithm goes so narrow and ONLY shows me 70s docs. I need to see more…
I like the BBC Archive ones.
During lockdown I watched an 80s Boarding School documentary but I’ve been unable to find it since.
Can we share good ones?

Here’s one of mine, love Olly Reed

Gail is Dead, about a young girl who grew up in care, had no family or anyone who loved her and died of a heroin overdose when she was 19.
I think it's from a series called Man Alive

I'm not sure if this counts

In the 2010s, there was an excellent documentary on the BBC about finance generally. I think there were three episodes. One of them went into great detail about how Tony Blair wanted to turn London into Monte Carlo. It's a fantastic explanation of rocketing house prices.

It disappeared very quickly, and I have never been able to find it since then. It also explained a lot of stuff about taxes and low wages. But it seemed like it vanished because people don't want to accept that Labour made or had any contribution to the type of economy we have now.

@Snooks1971 that Olly R doc is fab - assuming only part? Love that house - how long did he last in it?

‘Mumifying Alan, Egypt’s last secret’ is fascinating and macabre and also very emotional! Channel 4

Man alive and world in action made some hard hitting stuff if I remember correctly.

It was a boys definitely. Not prep. Older boys, young teens?

Along those lines, "Time Crashers". Celebrities (some famous and not) are sent to role play different eras. One of my favourites was Greg Rutherford, ex-Olympian - whatever job he was given, he just got on with it with good humour, leading to lots of, "You can tell why he's an Olympian" comments. Some of the others were, shall we say, less robust. Great fun.

This is the sort of thing I’ve been watching lately.

Ken Burns, "The West", about the history of the American west, including the pioneers and Native Americans. Just brilliant.

We have seen quite a few from a British series called Look at Life which is shown on the Talking Pictures TV channel, 82 on Freeview, almost certainly also available on YouTube. Very short, colour, huge range of subjects, often very patronising and sexist by modern standards, but offering quite an insight to a vanished time. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Look_at_Life_(film_series)

Was this the boarding school one?

Yes! I’ve misremembered, they are much younger. It really stuck with me. Thank you for finding it x

I remember watching something like this, it was called Johnny Go Home. Don't know if its the one you're thinking of though. Very hard watch for 13 year old me. Often think about it even now.

Does the amazing classic

"The World at War" count?

I have it on dvd. Outstanding piece of television.

If it was centred around a young boy sitting in a London train station and being approached by men from a charity who were in reality paedophiles. Then that's it.

yes! I was barely in my teens around then, but they were the gold standard of investigative journalism back then.

Snooks1971 · 03/07/2025 21:25

Some of the ones that I’ve been watching are how London “slums” (hate that word) Victorian terraces were cleared for amazing new high rises.
