Things where the cheap version is better than the fancy version

So last night I was eating some typical supermarket potato salad; your 85p a pot type stuff. It struck me that sometimes I’ll “treat myself” to a fancier version with thicker mayo sauce, fresh spring onions or chives, whole new potatoes etc. - yet there’s actually something pretty perfect about the basic version. The texture of the potato chunks and the sauce is just somehow pleasing (unless you make the mistake of buying a low fat version - the potatoes are always too hard) and I could easily eat the whole tub in one sitting if I don’t control myself.

I feel the same about sparkling wine sometimes. You could splash out for champagne or a similar higher end sparkling and, whilst it’s enjoyable, you realise you’d have been just as happy enjoying a £7 supermarket Prosecco for what it is.

What are your “cheap is good/better” options?

I prefer basic kievs over ‘taste the difference’ Kievs or whatever

Own brand cream cheese - philadelphia is full of gums and crap.

Own brand tends to be 100% milk

@HighStreetOtter:sorry but that is not possible. Nothing beats normal marmite !!

Honestly nobody here can taste the difference with that and the Aldi version.

I came on to say humus

I love the thick chunky ones you can lob on top o a slice of pitta

the overly blended runny smooth humus reminds me of cat diarrhoea

I agree about supermarket brands v expensive ones, but the sainsbury's basics hummus? I bought that once. I don't know what I were thinking. It was like eating a bag of dicks.

I will get slated for this but I can’t stand the expensive thin-crust wood fired pizza with tiny dollops of mozzarella and basil leaves. Give me the cheap fluffy cheesy pizza from a takeaway that also does chicken and burgers, any day.

Also switched to Aldi Norpak butter and prefer it to the Country Life we were using. Never got the hype over Lurpak, Kerrygold, President etc.

Have you tried Waitroses 100% peanut butter, it’s to die for. Makes you realise Sun Pat has destroyed the flavour by putting all the crap in it.

I buy the big tubs of 100% peanut butter from Lidl - definitely better than sunpat.

Agree on the kievs. My son moans when I buy the chicken breast ones and prefers the chicken nugget textured things.

Also lots of make up. I twice bought expensive foundation from one of those make up counter women after having my colour tested and all that. Neither are as good as my Rimmel from the supermarket. The Lancolme mascara isn’t as good as the maybelline.

The Inkey list moisturisers and Cerave moisturisers compared to high end ones. never found better than those two.

Lidls giant square blue or yellow1kg tubs of potato salad keep me and my sister going throughout the summer. We buy one every week and live on a scoop of that, slices of cheese, a boiled egg, pickles and ferments. Something just delightful about it and I love it.
