Things where the cheap version is better than the fancy version

So last night I was eating some typical supermarket potato salad; your 85p a pot type stuff. It struck me that sometimes I’ll “treat myself” to a fancier version with thicker mayo sauce, fresh spring onions or chives, whole new potatoes etc. - yet there’s actually something pretty perfect about the basic version. The texture of the potato chunks and the sauce is just somehow pleasing (unless you make the mistake of buying a low fat version - the potatoes are always too hard) and I could easily eat the whole tub in one sitting if I don’t control myself.

I feel the same about sparkling wine sometimes. You could splash out for champagne or a similar higher end sparkling and, whilst it’s enjoyable, you realise you’d have been just as happy enjoying a £7 supermarket Prosecco for what it is.

What are your “cheap is good/better” options?

'Stockwell' Coke.

@HighStreetOtter:sorry but that is not possible. Nothing beats normal marmite !!

Asda baked beans are much better than Heinz. And about a quarter of the price

You obviously don't live in London!

Nope Wales - lovely soft water!

BuckwheatBlini · 30/12/2025 22:11

Heinz ketchup is way nicer than the organic, non UPF versions

Tesco Keronics hair serum is just as good as Frizz Ease but only £2. I initially bought it as a spare to live in my overnight bag when I realised I hadn't packed Frizz Ease and I buy it all the time now. It does the anti frizz job but feels and looks less oily.

Water from my tap - honestly! Better than anything bottled. Supermarket brand champagne - just as good as the posh names.

Trying to now think of a non-liquid example!

Couldn't agree more about water, my tap water is excellent!

Tesco own brand cream cheese. Everything else has a funny aftertaste

Ukholidaysaregreat · 30/12/2025 22:14

Lidl chocolate hobnobs -called Oaties. Much nicer and more chocolatey than real hobnobs!

gannett · 30/12/2025 22:16

Peanut butter.

Used to think I just preferred Sun-Pat to the fancy organic stuff with the texture of concrete but in fact it turns out I even prefer Sainsbury's basic peanut butter to Sun-Pat.

Aldi Raspberry Preserve..haven't tried other flavours yet but that one is delicious. Also Aldi Magnum Silver bottle of washing up liquid and micro fibre cloths in a pack.

Tortilla chips!
Supermarkets cheapest, are so much nicer than Doritos

Morrisons own brand are far superior to Doritos in every way!

KimuraTan · 30/12/2025 23:47

Cheap version wotsits- every single time 😆

Rantymare · 30/12/2025 23:56

I love my fizz and honestly cannot tell the difference between Aldi prosecco and the 'naice' stuff my wealthy friend sends me in a box at Christmas. The other wines in the box absolutely are superior-this isn't just me having cheap taste, but fizz is fizz IME.

I haven't had them in YEARS but I do remember preferring the 'smart price' noodles over supernoodles. Softer and more flavoursome, and on days where I am craving junk even now, I sometimes choose a supermarket brand 'pot noodle' substitute rather than the real thing.

Lidl dark chocolate digestives especially if you eat them after you have let them sit in the fridge for a bit. Yum.

ByeChristmas · 31/12/2025 00:05

Tesco bunny bites are better than Pom bears!

I always prefer the own brand cheaper houmous over the more expensive (and smooth) branded versions

I came on to say humus

I love the thick chunky ones you can lob on top o a slice of pitta

the overly blended runny smooth humus reminds me of cat diarrhoea

janalam · 31/12/2025 00:25

Rimmel extra lash mascara is the best I’ve tried. Way superior to Chanel/Charlotte Tilbury/Dior etc

rainbows40 · 31/12/2025 00:32

Urgh them bunny crisps turn my stomach.
There are a few things I prefer that are cheaper than the branded options, such as Stockwell ketchup - I think the only difference is it has less sugar in it, which imo is much better for you!
Tesco 4 pack of toilet rolls are such good quality and much stronger than the andrex ones.
Tesco cheep toilet bleach is also imo better than the leading brand.
Tesco tomato soup is lovely, too!

Have you tried Waitroses 100% peanut butter, it’s to die for. Makes you realise Sun Pat has destroyed the flavour by putting all the crap in it.

JumpingPumpkin · 31/12/2025 00:58

For me it's basic vanilla ice cream - I much prefer the cheap own brand versions over those thick cookies/honeycomb/toffee too rich posh versions.

AlexaBeQuiet · 31/12/2025 01:02

M&S digestives as opposed to McVities Digestives which are so expensive now.

I was thinking the same thing. We tried non branded and it didn’t get eaten. I thought it was Aldi but wondering if perhaps it was Tesco.
