Since when do Always pads smell so awful?

I haven’t used always in years, I mainly use organic tampons and pads. I’m travelling for work and got caught out. There’s only a small corner shop where I’m staying so had to buy the green pads. Oh my goodness the stench is so strong. The packet was only in my canvas shopping bag for a few minutes but I can still smell it in the bag even after a day. Don’t get me started on the actual pad itself. I’m sure it wasn’t ever this bad? Awful

Since always, hence the name.

zoomam · 02/07/2025 19:11

Really? I genuinely can’t remember. It’s been nearly a decade since I last used it and was the only brand I used in my teens to early 30’s so maybe I got used to it.

Vinegar smell? Yep, always has always been like that!

I remember this in the 90s.

McCartneyOnTheHeath · 02/07/2025 19:13

They're horrendous now. The ones in the pink packets are smell-free but harder to get hold of.

amymel2016 · 02/07/2025 19:14

Like an awful floral smell? It’s been the last 10ish years. Horrible horrible smell, no idea why they do it!

Andtheworldwentwhite · 02/07/2025 19:14

I stopped buying them for this reason. They always gave me a rash as well. Horrible things

GroovyChick87 · 02/07/2025 19:15

I've not used them in years due to the Aldi and Lidl version being 42p a pack vs the £2.80 odd price of Always.

assertiveplant · 02/07/2025 19:17

Scented sanitary products will probably be the next talcum powder class action lawsuit. I don't know how this moronic stuff makes it to market.

NegroniMacaroni · 02/07/2025 19:36

Do you mean the perfumed ones? It makes me so angry on so many levels - I feel like they're implying periods are offensive. Periods don't even smell if you change pads often. Plus the perfume gives me a rash.

dementedpixie · 02/07/2025 19:43

It infuses the whole aisle at the supermarket
It's bodyform I tend to buy for dd as I use tampons instead

SoManyTshirts · 02/07/2025 19:46

Seconding the recommendation for the unscented Lidl version, although it can be hard to find!
Always annoys me when the packaging says “fresh” and means “smells awful”.

Corgi2023 · 02/07/2025 19:49

I think it has been the last 5-10 years they changed them to smell flowery. I used to use them all the time but the smell does not make them discreet anymore. I have the body form ones or own brand now. They need to sack their product testers.

gamerchick · 02/07/2025 19:49

Apparently always were asked why they thought we wanted our periods to smell like artificial flowers and they replied that women want that.

They personally give me thrush. Awful things. Aldis own brand are better.

Om83 · 02/07/2025 19:50

I can’t stand them because of their artificial perfumed smell- always used them since 13yrs old and have always been a bit sensitive to artificial scents so thought it was just me! 2 years ago decided enough was enough swapped to body form- don’t know why it took me so long 😂Recently tried period pants and I’m converted!

jamanbutter · 02/07/2025 19:53

The basic Tesco packet, without perfume works well for me. I don’t know people bother with the fancy stuff.

Ilovegoldies · 02/07/2025 19:58

I've gone back to the Kotex mattresses. Fragrance free and the bulk makes me feel safe during my perimenopausal floods.

Arlanymor · 02/07/2025 20:55

Oh, do you mean the perfumed ones? They are awful - that fake talcum powder smell.

It took me years to work out they were what was causing thrush for me! Always was the ‘in’ brand at school so of course I wanted those! When they introduced the scent it was hideous month after month.

I switched to bodyform around 15 years ago and have never had a bout of thrush following a period since.

runningonberocca · 02/07/2025 21:07

I think since about 10 yrs ago. Always had been my brand of choice forever until they bloody perfumed all their pads! The smell is awful and the itchy rash was even worse. I switched to Bodyform - comfortable, absorbent and no perfumed. Always must’ve lost lots of business - I can’t understand why they can’t have at least some of their products without the scent

DisapprovingSpaniel · 02/07/2025 21:59

Also never buy them for exactly this reason. The ‘scent’ is awful, over powering and cannot be good for your skin.

SaturdayDream · 02/07/2025 22:01

I felt like I was burning after I needed an emergency pack of pads last week. Never again will I buy Always.

I usually like Aldi’s.

NormaSears · 02/07/2025 22:12

I use the unscented supermarket pads.
Don't get me started on scented bogroll.

DancingNotDrowning · 02/07/2025 22:24

They’re vile and I can’t believe women choose them.
I find myself standing in the aisle sniffling packets to establish which are unscented

merryhouse · 02/07/2025 22:27

oof yes, aren't they awful? I'd used Always since they first came out (seems like it anyway) and had to give up. Switched to Tesco and never regretted it (except for the stupid little wrapping tab that's designed in such a way that it doesn't actually wrap)
