“100k isn’t a big salary”

cadburyegg · 28/06/2025 13:28

I’ve just logged onto instagram and YET AGAIN a post comes up headed “100k isn’t a big salary, here’s why”. I’m so sick of seeing it. Most of us earn nowhere near 100k. I don’t spend my time moaning on instagram about how hard done by I am and there aren’t news articles about it. I don’t even feel like I AM hard done by. I feel lucky to be earning less than half that and to have a reasonable flexible job. I’m not going to the press saying poor me poor me because I don’t feel sorry for myself. Yet there seems to be shitloads of “awareness” posts about how shit it is for high earners and how it’s so sad they don’t have free childcare. I know people can have high expenses and I know it’s all relative and I’m probably overreacting but I seriously do not care anymore. It doesn’t mean the salary isn’t high. I’m so sick of seeing these out of touch posts. 🤯

Just say you don’t because this is absolutely a problem in this country and present on this thread.

In your mind maybe

TizerorFizz · 29/06/2025 10:05

@Flowergirlie91 They have every benefit going too! In London if your take home is less than £100,000 you are the squeezed middle. Hence all the complaints and strikes by doctors! Earning a consultant salary in a cheap housing area does make that doctor well off. Elsewhere not so much. Housing costs make such a difference.

Nope. There are stats showing hatred of poor people in the UK and a lot has been written on it. It’s also reflected in government policies, hence why it’s a labour government attempting high welfare cuts. It’s also present on this thread, as seen through the crap about people on benefits being better off than higher earners.

How can you class yourself as the middle when you’re on the 95th centile for income? That is not the middle, it’s the top.

This thread isn’t about whether or not the cost of living is higher in London, it’s about whether £100K is a big income. It is. There are no two ways about that. It’s like you having enough to buy a Lamborghini and me buying a second hand Punto, and you saying “Well we’ve both got a car so I’m no better off.

The average wage of doctors in London is half that. Only consultants and specialist grade doctors are earning £100k and above.

I think you've highlighted the point with your analogy - despite a disparity in incomes both parties would only be able to buy the Punto because cars cost 3 times the price for someone who lives in London.

No, the analogy is that a house in London costs more than a house in Hull. But £100K is the same money in London or Hull. It’s the same currency. £100K is £100K whether you choose to the buy the expensive house in London or the cheap house in Hull.

Nobody is arguing that it costs more for a house in London. Or that someone on £100K wouldn’t have a better standard of living than £100K in Hull.

But a top 95% salary is still a big salary, and you’d have a much better life than someone on NMW in London.

Ridiculous for saying there is data on this country’s attitudes towards poor people? If you say so.

This thread is not about the benefits system. You want to talk about that start your own thread. If you want to earn 100 grand go out and get it and maybe you will see how hard it is to reach this earning level. These types of jobs are not just given away

But they frequently are, sorry if the maths doesn't suit your narrative.

On UC you'll get all your childcare paid (well, 85% or so isn't it) which can be worth £2k+ per month dependant on number of children. And child benefit of £1-200 a month. And your rent paid, call that another £1000. That's £3k+ every month on top of your wages, which will be, say £2k take home. Slightly over £5k. Might get council tax reduction too.

£100k gets you slightly over £5k take home.

Even if you take £1k off the UC calc, that's still £4k+ a month take home. Akin to £80k earned salary.

Exactly this.

£100k jobs are not just given away.

But if I decided to work part time in my local cafe, live in a rental and claim UC, with the number of children I have, one with a PIP element, I'd be on not dissimilar take home. Hell, with a bit of child maintenance I'd be on a take home of over £100k salary.

No one hates "the poor" but some people can't stand to have it pointed out that they can't simultaneously claim £100k salary is a fortune and they are on the breadline, when you demonstrate that they actually aren't taking home too dissimilar a net amount.

TizerorFizz · 29/06/2025 11:52

@Miyagi99I was really referencing consultants.

Yeah I can’t keep on suffering foolishness like this. Keep out my mentions with this crap or quit your job to live the luxury life that is apparently available on benefits.

Truth is that 100k is a fantastic salary that only the lucky can have

and they clearly are lucky because their inability to see that 100k is great means that they didn’t get their great jobs because of their great analytical skills or budgeting skills or common sense

Have a look at "playing chess with pigeons"...most appropriate...

UC has never paid over 2k a month in childcare. The maximum amount you can claim in childcare is £1031 for one child and £1700 for two or more children. Several people have said a full time nursery place in London is something like £2k a month per child, so no, UC claimants in London aren’t getting anything near “all of their childcare costs paid”.

There is a cap on housing costs too, even in London.

When the high childcare costs stop, the higher earner will be much better off with that money in their pockets, whereas the person claiming UC won’t be any better off.

People on UC don’t get ‘their rent paid’, they get a proportion on it paid. In my area housing allowance is under £600 pcm for 3 bedrooms, and the market rent is £1200. Also, not all UC claimants cost £2k a month in childcare. Most children are school age, so it would be a much lower figure for wraparound care, and nothing for secondary age children.

Agreed. There is a funny youtubhe clip of a man on a talkshow shouting at a Labour politician because Labour are going to increase tax on him, and that his £80k+ salary was not top 5%. The man clearly was not very intelligent, and maths was not his strong point, so it was quite clear that his whopping salary was due to luck rather than any sort of intelligence.

Megifer · 29/06/2025 12:28

People still trying to justify £100k not being a big salary? 🤣

Then what’s stopping other people from trying to earn this amount?
