“100k isn’t a big salary”

cadburyegg · 28/06/2025 13:28

I’ve just logged onto instagram and YET AGAIN a post comes up headed “100k isn’t a big salary, here’s why”. I’m so sick of seeing it. Most of us earn nowhere near 100k. I don’t spend my time moaning on instagram about how hard done by I am and there aren’t news articles about it. I don’t even feel like I AM hard done by. I feel lucky to be earning less than half that and to have a reasonable flexible job. I’m not going to the press saying poor me poor me because I don’t feel sorry for myself. Yet there seems to be shitloads of “awareness” posts about how shit it is for high earners and how it’s so sad they don’t have free childcare. I know people can have high expenses and I know it’s all relative and I’m probably overreacting but I seriously do not care anymore. It doesn’t mean the salary isn’t high. I’m so sick of seeing these out of touch posts. 🤯

It’s a shame people can’t make their point without resorting to personal insults

We don't all live in London and the south east.

Ultimately a pretty irrelevant statement. Many people do, in fact most people do.

The cost of living in some little northern town doesn’t matter.

🤣🤣 did you know in the north we have gasp doctors and teachers and accountants etc. were not all living down the pit!

The only insult I’ve seen used wasn’t arguing against your point.
Can you elaborate on which posts you are referencing?

I don't think @Zombiefluff has set foot outside of the M25 TBH. One of my friends earns in excess of £100k in Rotherham (shock horror), and it is a lot of money for round here.

At which point did I say there wasn’t?

If you’re going to moan about people sharing their perspective and brush it off because “we dont all live in the south or london” then you need to acknowledge that actually most people do live in the south and london where costs are higher. People have been very quick on this thread to whinge about anyone from London but god forbid if you do it the other way around.

Only insulting to people complaining that 100k isn’t a good salary. Many people on this salary are well aware it’s a good income, even if they do live in an expensive area.

No one has yet answered my question about how carers, shop workers and others on NMW survive in London.

You’re literally proving my point.

100k might far in Rotherham but statically the majority of high earners are in or near London where costs are higher.

DipsyDee · 28/06/2025 19:42

HazeyjaneIII · 28/06/2025 19:38

Yes it is

No it really isn’t if you live in an expensive area because of your job. I think there is a huge assumption on this thread that those who earn that amount (and no I don’t earn that amount) get that full amount. They don’t. They are taxed at the highest rate and the take home pay is far less than 100 grand. Far far less. There seems to be a far amount of jealousy on this thread at those who earn these amounts without any thought about the work that those people do to earn that salary. They aren’t just given it and without these high earners paying tax there would be far less public services

Not the OP, but can you appreciate that while £100k in Rotherham can afford a fantastic standard of living, it may not stretch as far in eg Surrey.

We all know that London and the south east is the most densley populated part of the UK, but most of the populace don't live there.

There are approximately 18.5 million people in London and the south east out of a UK population of just over 68 million.

No one who is earning 100 grand would have 4 children in a private school

Not impossible, especially considering with this number of children on that salary you are likely looking at a two-parent household. Although obviously I was being a bit facetious with the example I gave, but you absolutely have people with salaries in this ballpark with more than one child in parent school.

theunbreakablecleopatrajones · 28/06/2025 19:49

Ratisshortforratthew · 28/06/2025 15:50

There are hundreds of one bed flats that cost significantly less than £350k in London (I know, I live here and own one) but people conveniently
discount this because they’re not in desirable areas. Just because childcare is expensive (and it is too expensive) doesn’t mean that isn’t a huge salary - it means you’re choosing to spend it on things that cost a lot and probably living beyond your means in other areas. People earning that much have something poor people will never have: choices. If it isn’t covering all their outgoings they have the choice to make changes.

One bed flats are going to be lived in by singles or couples though (and most couples I know have 2 bed flats to avoid killing each other).

No one is saying 100k doesn’t leave you pretty comfortable as a single person in London, but if you have two kids and nursery fees, while it’s a decent income, it doesn’t allow for many frills.

If they did the would probably be mortgage free and live in a cheaper area of the uk or it’s all on credit card

People on lower incomes in London typically live in social housing, commute a very long way, or share with a lot of other people.

A colleague of mine inherited a lease on a two bed council flat in zone 2. She pays £400 a month for it.

To rent the same flat on the open market would cost more like £2k a month.

I spent the first ten years living here in flat shares - this is very normal for people of all ages.

Cottagecheeseisnotcheese · 28/06/2025 19:52

100K is not average in London or the south east though the average in London for a single salary is higher than the rest of the country it is still under 50K
so even in London it is double the median

UK is an island of haters so there is definitely jealousy involved but are you completely skipping past the posts with valid critiques on the lack of perspective some people have when discussing their salaries? I have family and friends earning in this region and some of them would also call this out. They have the sense to see that the average median salary earner is unlikely going to relate to your problems and discuss their challenges with their peers. Also, we know how tax works.

I agree. The point I was trying to make is that £100k goes a lot further outside of Londo,. so to non Londoners £100k is a fantastic salary.

Well senior school fees are about 20k a year in the average London day senior school, a bit less for prep (though not for the fancy ones)

On a 100k salary you are taking home about 70k, so no, you could not have 4 kids in private schools unless you have a magic money tree to pay for literally everything else.

You lot are f*cking exhausting. Forget the four kids as a specific example but you DO have parents with 2-3 kids in private school with salaries in this region.
