I get choked up seeing cars move for an ambulance, anybody else?!

Every time this happens to me I wonder if I am the only one!

Basically as the title says, when an ambulance is moving through traffic with their blue lights and I see people pulling to the side for them, I feel a big wave of emotion. For a few seconds I feel choked up like I'm about to burst into tears!

I very rarely cry and don't have anxiety so it's nothing like that. My only guess is that I feel emotional that the drivers are all pulling together to help the person who's in need of the ambulance.

I'd love to hear whether or not I'm alone! I'd feel stupid asking people in real life.

Yes. Glad I have fellow weirdos to share this with. 😂

Me too every time the traffic moves to the sides for police, fire or ambulances. Big wave of emotion 💕

DH pulled aside in a yellow box to allow an ambulance get through and he got a TICKET 😡. The photo even showed the ambulance, the idiot paid the fine within 2 weeks so it’s cheaper.
i told him he should have appealed but he thought he’d lose out on the cheaper fine.

I read an article by a paramedic just this week but can’t remember where, they said they don’t want people to cross the line at red lights or enter yellow boxes as it makes it harder for them and it’s illegal too. I was really surprised as I assumed that’s what we were supposed to do!

Can't say I do, but I am a very emotional person, so I do understand how this could make someone feel that way.

Of course you’re not supposed to break the law. If caught you will prosecuted, moving for an emergency vehicle is not a defence. If you’re at a red light and they can’t get around, they’ll sit and wait with siren off.

Yet we’re instilled with ‘every second counts’. I work for the emergency services, it’s pretty much the tag line.
When I say go over the line I’m not talking sailing through in front of the ambulance and carrying on with your journey, I’m talking the width of a car wheel. I’d be horrified if I sat there looking like I couldn’t give a damn, I’d take the fine over someone dying

No. That's bonkers 😂

I've never really give it a second though. I guess I just assume people are moving to avoid fines or points on their license😂

Charming. I hope its never your family in urgent need of the emergency services, and that you do indeed move aside anyway?. (A couple of seconds to just move out of the way? - not saying that you don't, but where is your compassion?). Also, not saying that everyone has to burst into tears every time, but I love that people (well, most people) do realise the importance of allowing emergency vehicles to just get past & do whatever 'job' they are on their way to, and yes, it can choke me up - that united 'wave' of cars moving aside, realising the situation .The emergency vehicles are on their way to God knows what horror they may have to face, I think of them, & of course, whoever they have been called to help.

I would happily take the fine as a baby i had a cardiac arrest in the back of an ambulance I cant even imagine the level of stress them paramedics must of felt.

God YES! Sometimes chest heaving sobs. And now I’m getting stinging eyes just from reading other people’s descriptions…

Haha, I know what you mean. Seeing a school coach does it for me! 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️

What is it about the school coach that triggers emotion?

Well, I suppose in the words of the late, great Whitney Houston, the children are the future?

thingsineverthoughtidsay · 03/07/2025 23:28

Gosh, I’m reading the responses and realising how mad I am! I do the same with ambulances. Reading people’s reasoning doesn’t resonate with me. Clearly there is no reason for me, as I then realised I also well up when I see coaches, planes, trains… Can’t watch fireworks without almost bursting into tears. WTF is wrong with me?!
