I get choked up seeing cars move for an ambulance, anybody else?!

Every time this happens to me I wonder if I am the only one!

Basically as the title says, when an ambulance is moving through traffic with their blue lights and I see people pulling to the side for them, I feel a big wave of emotion. For a few seconds I feel choked up like I'm about to burst into tears!

I very rarely cry and don't have anxiety so it's nothing like that. My only guess is that I feel emotional that the drivers are all pulling together to help the person who's in need of the ambulance.

I'd love to hear whether or not I'm alone! I'd feel stupid asking people in real life.

I'm not particularly emotional but I shed a few tears in the supermarket the other day when a young child (probably about six or seven) was a couple of pence short for the sweets they wanted and the next customer in line gave them the pennies. I don't even care if this is a regular ploy on the part of the child (or their parents), it was still sweet to see. I blubbed a bit.

You should what happens in Germany in a traffic jam. They make a lane for emergency vehicles so they can move easily.

Compared to when I was on the M25 not far behind an accident and the firefighters were having to get people to move their cars to let them through... only for people to then move back as soon as they passed so the following ambulances couldn't get through...

kerstina · 28/06/2025 09:37

I don’t but I can see why it would make you emotional. I get emotional at any sign of kindness from others helping out animals / wildlife in danger or distress.

RogueRascal · 28/06/2025 09:37

I get this too but only since my mum passed away. Reminds me of her final journey I suppose

gamerchick · 28/06/2025 09:37

Well tbf you have to get out of the way for blue lights and sirens. It's not out of the kindness of people's hearts. But I'm not sentimental like that.

I came here to say this. In Germany the moment there’s a traffic jam everyone proactively and prospectively moves to the side to make a Rettungsgasse (saving lane, approximately) in case an emergency vehicle comes along. I have always found that very moving.

Yes I do too op.... I think for me it's because it's seeing a combined effort of a community and population to try to potentially help and even save another person.

Wynter25 · 28/06/2025 09:43

Yes I do

pushthebuttonnn · 28/06/2025 09:46

Yes this happens to me too. Also I was near Dublin airport once and the sight of an Aer Lingus plane departing into the clouds made me cry. It reminded me of all the emigration that happened in the 80s. Thankfully unemployment is low now and most people are emigrating by choice.

SorenLorensonsInvisibleFriend · 28/06/2025 09:47

I always mutter a prayer if I see one, “God bless whoever is in it, and wherever they’re going to.” I’ll never forget the desperation I felt as I waited for an ambulance to come for my badly injured mother (many, many years ago!) and how overwhelmingly grateful and awed I was by the paramedic team.

Limth · 28/06/2025 09:47

No. That's bonkers 😂

I've never really give it a second though. I guess I just assume people are moving to avoid fines or points on their license😂

BlueandPinkSwan · 28/06/2025 09:48

I must be san froid as I'm not really given to crying over anything.
Hate seeing injured animals though.

shellyleppard · 28/06/2025 09:51

I get annoyed when drivers don't move for ambulance or emergency vehicle's. But seeing a funeral courtege makes me tear up

PopThatBench · 28/06/2025 09:51

I do too!
My little girl was in the car and mentioned the ambulance went through the red light at the crossroads and I explained everyone stops for the ambulance because they’re in a rush to save somebody… my god I almost burst into tears.

This year I raced to my Mum’s house as I couldn’t get hold of her, had to pull over for an ambulance with sirens and blue lights going on the way, the ambulance was for her, my Mum didn’t make it.

You never know who they’re trying to save 💛

Onwardsandupwards2025 · 28/06/2025 09:52

Yeah I get choked up seeing ambulances with flashing lights/sirens and I always say a little prayer in my head for the person it’s for.
I’ve always been a very emotional person

ShowOfHands · 28/06/2025 09:52

It's the feeling of strangers pulling together and universal human endeavour.

When I was following my Grandma on her last journey (behind the hearse) I was keeping it together until we drove down a high street and people stopped and bowed their heads. A man took off his hat and paused in respect. Now that made me howl. It was the kindness of strangers.

Bunnykins34 · 28/06/2025 09:52

Omg yes! Always thought it was just me and never said anything to anyone!
Its worse now as my daughter is just completing her 1st yr as a Paramedic Science Student and is on her last 2 shifts with the LAS....The calls they have had when shes been on Placement have been plentiful.
Just dropped her off early this morning for a 12 hr shift and passed 2 ambulances on blues on the way home 🥲

TizerorFizz · 28/06/2025 09:53

No. Never. If I saw 10 ambulances - yes.

IsItSummerSoon · 28/06/2025 09:54

StasisMom · 28/06/2025 09:26

Yes! And police horses!

Yes same!

GCDPAF · 28/06/2025 09:55

Yes, I understand what you mean. I don’t get tears, though I’d have that lump in my throat emotional feeling when I first started to explain to my child when they were tiny what ambulances were for.

I feel a bit of a fuzzy feeling when people stop at zebra crossings for me to cross too.

I think possibly for me it’s because the world has become quite a hard place full of selfishness and aggression. It’s nice to see those little moments of people doing the right thing, because in general it’s quite rare these days.

TheCurious0range · 28/06/2025 09:56

No, and I had to go with my toddler bluelighted in an ambulance during COVID and it was terrifying. I suppose it's how often you see them too, I live really close to a big hospital so this happens multiple times a week. It's just convention and common sense to move, people do it for police too.

Overtheatlantic · 28/06/2025 09:56

People doing the right thing because that’s just what you do. I get it OP.

TheFallenMadonna · 28/06/2025 10:00

I sat in the front of the ambulance when my daughter was taken to hospital in critical condition. Some people don't move out of the way. The ambulance had to stop very briefly so a procedure could happen, and someone actually beeped at us. The driver and paramedic were incredible.

dottiedodah · 28/06/2025 10:00

I was blue lighted to Hospital with Sepsis. So I know what you mean .Most drivers are courteous ,and move out of the way quickly. However the odd Dickhead will always push their luck .On holiday once A guy in front of me shot forwards even though the Ambulance was approaching!

mariasanp · 28/06/2025 10:01

Yes the last sliver of community.
