Salad and British people….

CurlewKate · 27/06/2025 08:53

Do British people generally only eat salad in a heatwave? Asking because I went shopping yesterday and found empty shelves. I feel I should get special access to lettuce because I eat it and serve it all year round. All you fair weather Romaine lovers-reveal yourselves!

Never ever had salad in the UK, now we live in italy, i have it with eggs or fish for breakfast most days, and often just have a bowl of fruit and yoghurt for lunch. Totally to do with the weather. I was a eating 100% hot food in yorkshire.

Its rocket for me! Rocket, grated carrot, sweetcorn, diced pepper, cucumber, finely chopped red cabbage and tiny pickled onions or pink pickled onion. I can eat that on the side of anything all year round.

CluelessAboutBiology · 27/06/2025 16:02

I tend to dodge them!

I saw someone sneeze into the salad bar in Morrisons once 😂🤮

haven’t bought a salad from their bar since.

absolutely grim

Why do these things all happen at Morrisons? I don’t have a Morrisons near me but is there something particularly unhygienic about their salad bar?

YesButNoButMayybee · 27/06/2025 16:15

Morrisons is perfectly good and has high quality foods. Their salad bars are very varied and attractive so I guess a lot of people use them and the more you use them the more you might see things you don't necessarily want to see!

I think it's code for 'low-grade clientele with dubious personal hygiene'.

Though it was in an Asda that I saw people actually getting into a fistfight over discounted Easter eggs -- they ended up rolling around on the floor in the confectionary aisle. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and have always been disappointed it's never happened again in my presence.

We eat salad all year around. But not lettuce. I’m not a massive lettuce fan unless it’s one with some flavour.

I like rocket with pesto pasta! That’s flavourful and a match made in heaven!

I never eat lettucy type salad. I can't see the point of lettuce at all. I quite like the Morrisons salad counter though.

I used to work on the Morrisons salad bar when I was a teenager. Everything gets soaked in Milton to disinfect it before it goes out to the trays, which I find pretty awful!

Yeah I do actually like rocket. The spicier the better.

JohnTheRevelator · 27/06/2025 17:08

They all want to make an ENORMOUS salad. 😂

I adore a really peppery rocket.

BuildbyNumbere · 27/06/2025 17:11

Probably more people eating it more often while it’s hot instead of hot food with veg, also more having BBqs

Seriously?! I adore lettuce! Especially iceberg & spinach. I always have salad in my fridge all year round.

TY78910 · 27/06/2025 09:30

Growing your own is actually not as easy as it sounds. My relatives started growing their own veg in a glasshouse and I’ve sampled some recently - bitter cucumbers and lettuce. I think you need to really know your stuff to successfully do it and it have the right flavour

Some varieties of lettuce & cucumber can be bitter but if left for a day or two until more ripe, they’ll be fine. Been growing them for years!

YesButNoButMayybee · 27/06/2025 17:39

We eat much more lettuce, and leafy greens, when we grow our own but we haven't done that the past couple of years. I don't prioritise lettuce day-to-day anymore as I'd rather get my nutrients from other vegetable sources, but every so often there's nothing I want more than a proper leafy salad.

Theyreeatingthedogs · 27/06/2025 18:33

We have a small salad every night as a starter. Love it.

They don’t. Mumsnet is bizarrely snobbish about Morrisons!

You are not alone, OP. We eat salad all year round too. Great starter at Christmas lunch :)

I loved the Morrisons salad counter too until I saw a woman pick a boiled egg out of the egg mayonnaise bowl, suck all the mayo off and then put the egg back in. Never had anything else from there.🤢

There is a definite salad season as no one wants to cook in hot weather and no one wants cold food in the winter.

Jesus. Please someone moan about dogs 🤣humans are rank!

Yes indeed. I was once torn apart on a thread for saying that I shopped at Morrisons. Still shop there, though (and luckily I don’t eat egg salad!)

Edited

I wonder why that is!! I never associated Morrisons with “class” more with age?

Zimunya · 27/06/2025 20:41

@TY78910 - I have no idea. The concept was new to me too!

Mh67 · 27/06/2025 22:43

The issue is with the shops.it should be someone's job to check forth coming weather and order stock appropriately
