Salad and British people….

Do British people generally only eat salad in a heatwave? Asking because I went shopping yesterday and found empty shelves. I feel I should get special access to lettuce because I eat it and serve it all year round. All you fair weather Romaine lovers-reveal yourselves!

Lots of us love a massive salad on MN.

DeafLeppard · 27/06/2025 10:20

Salad is just the summer equivalent of winter side vegetables, surely? Often we'll have a more substantial salad like fattoush or a potato based salad as a main meal in the summer, but otherwise we'll have some raw veg (salad leaves, carrot salad etc) as an accompaniment, whereas in winter it would be some cooked veg.

sonoonetoldyoulifewasgonnabethisway · 27/06/2025 10:28

All year round, I like the refreshing crunch with my meals

Grow your own.

This year I decided to commit and do just this! My lettuce was amazing - I got two crops from it before the slugs discovered it and now it's nothing but a couple of little stumps. They have yet to find the salad onions and the rocket though, so I have hope.

Kelticgold · 27/06/2025 10:37

I love a potato salad, but not the lettuce type of salad, that’s for the goats.

I loved the Morrisons salad counter too until I saw a woman pick a boiled egg out of the egg mayonnaise bowl, suck all the mayo off and then put the egg back in. Never had anything else from there.🤢

There is a definite salad season as no one wants to cook in hot weather and no one wants cold food in the winter.

Eww.

chattyness · 27/06/2025 10:40

We used to grow our own lettuce but now we buy it. I can't stand lettuce, only my DH eats it & he only linked little gems. This year he's gone right off salad so we aren't buying it every often. I've never bought the bagged stuff .

Thankfully I’ve been eating the eggs from Morrisons salad counter for years and never once seen them in Mayo

I think lots of cultures eat cold food more frequently when it's hot don't they?! And hot food when it's cold?

I don't think that's only the Brits.

100% this

We get a veg box and eat it when it comes. No heatwave here, but I had salad for lunch yesterday.

I buy my vegetables at the farmers' market -- various types of lettuce, broad beans, spring onions, herbs etc are all in season now, after a long winter/hungry gap of eating mostly winter greens and root vegetables. So of course I'm eating a lot of salad now!

ChocolateCinderToffee · 27/06/2025 10:43

I eat salad most days because I prefer it to cooked veg and it’s less work.

And now you know why 😱😆

minipie · 27/06/2025 10:46

I eat salad all year

But I definitely eat MORE salad in summer

Maybe that’s why the shelves are empty rather than people ignoring lettuce until it’s hot?

CurlewKate · 27/06/2025 10:46

WhisperingTree · 27/06/2025 10:42

100% this

But it’s not either/or is it? Yes, a “main course”
salad is probably a warm weather thing. But salad as a side diet or a second course-that’s for all year round!

Yep. Me too. Urban myths abound.

I do like a salad but tend to only have them in summer.

YesButNoButMayybee · 27/06/2025 10:48

I think some people just genuinely love a (massive, MN) salad and therefore are much more likely to eat it throughout the year.

A good salad makes me very happy indeed!

DiscoBob · 27/06/2025 10:49

I eat gem lettuce, cucumber and spring onions most days. Sometimes twice a day. It's basically my go to veg side.

Lambs lettuce and watercress for when I'm feeling posh.

Sometimes broccoli, carrots, peas. But usually salad. Can't stand tomatoes though.

YesButNoButMayybee · 27/06/2025 10:54

I can confirm there was an egg mayo salad at our Morrisons salad counter where I used to live. There were also whole boiled eggs.

I think the exact mix of choices varies from store to store/region to region.

I haven't checked our local one now as I no longer buy from the salad counter.

Gross! 🤢Hope you reported it.

Honestly this is why I avoid things like salad counters, I don’t think self serve options are suitable or safe for public spaces!

Any buffets etc that are completely self serve and open to customers to easily tamper with I typically avoid.

The exception being hotel buffets that have enough staff standing round watching/serving - and even then I try to get there early so I’m of the first there lol

I don’t think deli counters served by shop staff are any better.
There was a documentary years ago about the lack of hygiene on them.

That’s why it’s sold all year round too… Eaten all year round but probably eaten more in the summer. So more of a chance of it needing more regular shelf filling in the summer and potentially getting low if they’ve messed up stock levels.

spoonbillstretford · 27/06/2025 11:28

I eat it all year round, but it's not surprising that there may be a run on it in barbecue season.

Oh no new fear unlocked 😂 yeah I can imagine lol

I wfh so actually don’t really go to deli counters or eat out that much at all. Tend to make my own salads and sandwiches.

wwyd2021medicine · 27/06/2025 12:17

I eat at least 3 bags of spinach, watercress and rocket salad each week. That doesn't tend to sell out due to the strong flavours.
Definitely an all year round thing here
