To think I should be allowed weight loss injections?

Firstly, I think it’s a great thing that people are able to use this medication to gain control over their weight, and I think the bar set for getting them on the NHS is ridiculously high and it should be given to anyone who is obese. All those years people spent banging on about how much obesity was pressuring the NHS and then when we’re given a medication to tackle it they don’t make it available!

So I’m not confused about why I can’t get it on the NHS - I shouldn’t be able to - but why can’t I pay for it?

My BMI is 24 and I’d like to shift a stone and a half/two stone. I’ve fluctuated between this weight and a stone lighter for about ten years. I used to be able to shift half a stone at least but this time I’m really struggling.

I keep getting adverts about weight loss injections so I thought I’d have a look. Filled in the questionnaire and it says my BMI isn’t high enough for a prescription? But surely if my starting BMI was, say 35, I’d be allowed to stay on them until my BMI was 21/22, which is what I’d like? So why can’t I pay for them to lose a couple of stone?

But someone who’s got a BMI of 24, who did have one of 35, is also is a healthy weight. So why is it okay for them to keep using the medication, but not okay for me to?

Because their starting weight was higher, what are you not understanding?

firstdayworries · 25/06/2025 23:30

@Chalk111111i understand exactly what you mean, why people who then hit a healthy BMI are allowed to continue using the jabs. Yet those who are tipping slightly over the edge aren’t allowed it. Not for free, I mean buy privately.

AmateurNoun · 25/06/2025 23:30

They haven't done studies yet on people in the normal BMI range which show A) that they work on people in that range for weight loss, B) that they provide health benefits for such people and C) that the risks outweigh the benefits.

It wouldn't surprise me if eventually they do show benefits for such people but until then it wouldn't make any sense to prescribe them.

Because they have already been on the jabs long term so there won't be much more damage they can cause by staying on them until they reach a lower BMI.

the op is clueless if she can’t even understand why someone who had a BMI of 35 is allowed to still use them when they’ve reached a lower BMI 🙄 fucking hell.

Eaglemom · 25/06/2025 23:32

People really like to scare monger. The jabs are used by millions, all meds have side effects but doesn't mean you will suffer them. I have a vested interest and nobody can convince me the cons will outweigh the benefits even if it is to lose a stone or 2. Why wait for it to creep upto morbidly obese when u are on that path and struggling, prevention will always be better than cure. OP i hear you, and it's purely because there needs to be a cut off point somewhere.

Surely if they were experiencing bad side effects they’d be taken off it quite quickly? Not left to damage themselves for months?

Because if they stop taking it as soon as they get to 24, their weight will probably go right up again to 35, that's why. They need to be kept on it for long enough so that they permanently change their lifestyle and habits.

Get a bloody backbone and stop demanding a magic pill when all you need to do is eat a bit less and walk a bit more for a couple of months.

Either that, or stuff your face until you are heavy enough to qualify.

Chalk111111 · 25/06/2025 23:35

labradorservant · 25/06/2025 23:28

Because it could lead to people with healthy bmi but also eating disorders to get hold if them. Also when you lose weight it would be pointless to stop when you are just into a healthy bmi. You might as well go to a good bmi. So you are still allowed them.

This applies equally to people who are starting them overweight or obese. Anyone can have an eating disorder.

Why does it matter once we’re both at a BMI of 24?

But they do prescribe them. You just have to have been on them since you had a higher BMI.

Right, so they time between 35 and 24 isn’t long enough, but between 24 and 22 is? I was wanting people who knew what they were talking about to answer really, not just people wildly guessing.

Jesus 🙄 A person starting off on injections has a higher bmi so it will take time to get down to an bmi of 24. However your BMI is already 24. You are both starting off at different BMIs. Why are you finding this difficult to understand? I think they need to include a basic understanding Claus for anyone wanting this jabs.

Sakura7 · 25/06/2025 23:43

What a bizarre thread.

Of course someone with a normal BMI should not be able to get the jabs, they're not licensed for that purpose? What would even be the benefit?

Agree with a PP that you'd have people with EDs jumping on this too, which is not remotely healthy.

Yes, but when we both have BMIs of 24, why can one person get a prescription and one can’t? Why does a starting weight make a difference? They’re not that weight any more. The BMIs are both the same.

You're either being deliberately obtuse or have comprehension issues then, as this has been explained to you up thread (and it's basic common sense).
