Staycation - Yorkshire

Mumofone1xx · 25/06/2025 21:32

Hi all, looking to book a staycation this summer as a single parent to a 7 year old. Looking possibly east coast of Yorkshire. Not sure if I should go with a caravan holiday (never done one of these) or airbnb or something else?? I'd like something quite peaceful as we live quite busy lives, but also things to do close by. Will probably spend most of the time at the beach. We are vegan so hoping to find somewhere with some restaurant's/pubs around. LO loves swimming (pool, beach) and picnics. We like Bridlington (my daughter is most interested in the rides and arcades which is super fun sometimes but also want to embrace the nature around too) so also looking for new places to explore!

Any suggestions would be great!

Scalby Lodge in Scarborough is lovely. It's a group of cottages, nice and quiet, sea views and think you can walk down to the beach or alongvthe coastal pth at least, has a play area and small games room. It's 5 mins drive into Scarborough and there are pubs/shops nearby. The cottages are various sizes.

Loads of places and choice but just so you're aware, unless specifically noted as otherwise, all the chips are cooked in beef dripping so even chips and mushy peas isn't vegan.

There might be the odd place that will cook in a vegetable oil, but it's very much the exception.

Stay in York. There’s lots to do there for little ones and you can easily get to the coast and to the wonderful Flamingo Land, if she likes animals and rides. Our son loved it from age 7 to age 14.

BarnOwlFlying · 25/06/2025 22:32

Do you mean a holiday or a staycation?
A staycation you obviously wouldn’t need any accommodation as you would stay in your own home and do day trips.
A holiday in Yorkshire I would recommend here:

Thank you for all the comments so far. I mean to stay for a couple of nights, was possibly looking at Flamborough or Filey? But haven't been to either of these before. Should also add on a budget so not looking for anything fancy 😁

Whitby! It's lovely for young children. It's got a sandy beach, crab catching from the quay, cute shops to spend pocket money in, ruins to explore, boat trips etc. my kids loved it there when they were young.

Hkakge · 25/06/2025 22:48

It's also got a great youth hostel with private rooms which is ideal for families

Alldressedup · 25/06/2025 22:51

The Bay in Filey is lovely. A holiday village of cottages and lodges with an on-site pool, bar, cafe and other activities. Direct access to Filey Beach too. 5 minute drive to Filey town which is nice but nowhere near as built up as Scarborough or even Bridlington - but both of these are within a 20 minute drive.
It’s next door to Primrose Valley which is a big Haven caravan park. Personally though I think The Bay is a lot nicer - more peaceful and slightly more upmarket, although lots of people love Primrose Valley for the pool (with slides I think) and entertainment. So it depends what you want.
You can book direct with cottage owners through AirBnB/ booking.com etc. Location wise it might come up as Hunmanby rather than Filey.

Flamborough is lovely. Not far to drive to Scarborough Bridlington or Filey. Nice beaches, Thornwick bay and north landing. RSPB reserve, a few cafes and pubs
Don’t stay in York it’s an hour to the coast and you’ll spend too much time sat in traffic on the A64!
Filey parking on the sea front fills up very quickly
Bridlington has a good swimming pool. There’s a paddling pool on south beach. Filey has a better paddling pool. Scarborough has the big new water park.

AnotherEmily · 25/06/2025 23:06

This is not a staycation. But following for ideas…

tillyandmilly · 25/06/2025 23:06

Erm crab catching? Vegans? As a fellow vegetarian crab catching sounds cruel!

Olivesforteatonighty · 25/06/2025 23:08

Definitely Whitby. There’s something goes wrong much to do and the beach there is lovely. We especially like the boat trips from the harbour and the steam train to Pickering.

Bjorkdidit · 26/06/2025 04:34

If you're looking at staying 2 nights you could make the most of it by visiting different areas on the way there and back which would depend on where you're coming from.

But for example, set off early in the morning on day 1 and go to York on the way there.

Arrive at accommodation, dump bags and go out for a wander, arcades etc, perhaps beach , pick up any supplies, dinner etc.

Day 2, more time in local area and perhaps a short trip out eg water park at Scarborough or Bempton Cliffs RSPB reserve just north of Flamborough with thousands of birds nesting on the cliffs.

Day 3, pack up and morning in the local area before departing, visiting eg Whitby then drive home over the North York Moors, you could drop into the villages of Goathland and/or Grosmont and see the steam trains or even have a ride on one.

Or if you're happy to go a bit further north you could also take in Saltburn which has a pier, and tram up the cliff.

Danes Dyke, a steep wooded area that leads down to the beach is a nice place to visit just south of Flamborough or further north is Ravenscar, which is interesting as in the late 19th Century they laid out roads for a new resort that was never built and you can walk around, read information and walk on the old railway path.

But all these places get very busy on any day when the weather is good, which has quite a low bar in Yorkshire, so if you're looking for parking you probably want to aim to get there by mid morning at the latest.

Some caravan parks have on site pools and splash parks but you might struggle to find a 2 night booking at short notice in peak season.

A private room in a Youth Hostel could be a good budget option, there's the Boggle Hole one, but I don't know of any others in the area but obviously look on the YHA website. You'd also have access to a kitchen to make picnics.

Takeoutyourcow · 26/06/2025 05:18

So you’re booking a holiday, not a staycation 🤣 Posting as we’re also looking for holidays on Yorkshire coast.

NeverGoingToMove · 26/06/2025 05:56

Another one saying Whitby! Very biased because I went every summer as a child and loved it. A huge array of beautiful holiday cottages to pick from but we always stayed here and I'm waiting for my own children to be slightly older to take them.

Sandy beach, spooky Abbey, rows of quirky shops, arcades and very easy to catch the coastliner bus to Scarborough, Filey, even York etc.
Very often themed weekends going on so just double check whether you want to clash with one.

You’ll find food a challenge in Scarborough and Whitby. They can’t cope with vegetarians, never mind vegans. Everything is fried in beef dripping and you can smell it everywhere.

I usually end up with a sandwich from the supermarket.

KingofMay · 26/06/2025 06:24

Can’t help with accommodation. On our recent visit we stayed at Scalby lodge and it’s not a budget option. But I would recommend this place for a day trip https://www.woldies.co.uk/

Meant to add, we had a vegan in our party and eating out was tricky so would recommend self catering.

XelaM · 26/06/2025 07:06

Stay at the Tiny Hotel in York - it looks like so much fun and York is gorgeous!

Mumofone1xx · 26/06/2025 08:30

Thank you for all the amazing suggestions! I count it as a staycation as we are only a couple hours from the east coast 😂 yes i think the vegan options seem limited, although heard good things about the Lighthouse restaurant in Flamborough

Check out Staithes. It is stunning and brilliant for young kids.

MabelEstherAllen · 26/06/2025 08:57

Boggle Hole youth hostel. It’s amazing - right on the beach, and the hostel has set up lots of activities for kids (eg treasure hunts etc)

Olivesforteatonighty · 26/06/2025 09:24

Definitely Whitby. There’s something goes wrong much to do and the beach there is lovely. We especially like the boat trips from the harbour and the steam train to Pickering.

Bloody auto correct, that should say there’s so much to do in Whitby.

Pootles34 · 26/06/2025 09:28

Agree with a youth hostel - either Boggle Hole or Whitby, both have been recently done up. For wildlife I would recommend Bempton Cliffs, wonderful RSPB reserve, also South Landing near Bridlington - they have a living seas centre, run by Yorkshire Wildlife Trust, that quite often have various hands-on things for kids to learn about the local wildlife. If you go to Bempton, remember to pack your binoculars - but I think they normally have ones you can hire for kids.

Swimming - if you don't mind spending a bit more Alpamere is quite good, but we really like Bridlington swimming baths, just the council one, they have a slide and a splash pad thing, with an enormous window looking out to sea. They also have a climbing wall so good for a rainy day.
