Why do I think like this? Eating issues

Stuckinarut100 · 25/06/2025 18:24

I would like to be slimmer but I struggle so much with snacking and mid afternoon munchies, I want all the biscuits, chocolate etc. then when I dig a bit deeper I realise I actually this weird irrational fear of losing weight, like if I lost the weight what else would I think about/ have to deal with?
I do a lot of exercise which I enjoy and like seeing the changes this has on my body.

but why do I have this weird feeling about losing weight and what can I do about it?

It’s not that simple sadly, I can binge eat if I deprive and I’ve battled this for years

If you were ever abused or the subject of harassment from men OP, I’ve heard a lot of women get fat to protect themselves. You don’t have to answer that but I hear it’s common

Stuckinarut100 · 25/06/2025 18:57

my bmi is 27 and I’ve been the same weight for years, with strength training my shape has changed a lot which I’m really proud of so it just doesn’t make sense to me.
can’t not buy snacks as I’m not only person who lives here and I don’t buy them, not trying WLI.

Absolutely I have that for breakfast every day. Think I have just some very weird and fucked attitudes to food, there are so many things I would never allow myself to eat or feel incredibly guilty if I did.

Think high fat low carb. Never hungry, no lows and highs, fairly good weight loss. Takes a while to get your head round it. But sugars a fucker so zero sugar. And I mean zero.
So full fat yoghurt, nice meat and veg, nuts etc. Butter but fuck all to put it on!

theunbreakablecleopatrajones · 25/06/2025 19:19

I think you need to see a therapist who specialises in eating disorders as you’ve obviously tried other ways to manage it.

The idea that people use weight gain to protect themselves from life (whether it’s as a handy excuse for not doing X things way to avoid sexual attention/relationships) is not radical nor is the idea people overweight to dull emotion.

But you need to why out why that is for you.

Stuckinarut100 · 25/06/2025 19:20

Thank you I couldn’t afford to see a therapist unfortunately!

I know you’re trying to be helpful but none of this works for any length of time for people who eat for emotional reasons. They have to deal with the reasons. Annoyingly.

FloraBotticelli · 25/06/2025 19:20

The Binge Eating Therapist and Rachel Wrigley (both on YouTube) might be helpful.

If you contact BEAT the eating disorder charity they run online groups.

I second this. I eat Greek or Skyr yoghurt - with a mix of different types of berries and grapes and a tiny amount of oats or muesli sprinkled on top - at all times of the day. It's nutritious, filling and delicious.

This is what you need to work on. Something caused this attitude, if you are ready, it's time to poke about and sort it out.

I hate it when replied get deleted!

I have a weird attitude around this.

I used to have quite a healthy body image but now I don't think I can like myself unless I'm toned. However when I've been toned, I feel extremely....naked. Like having a layer of fat is comfortable. I also feel....cold...when I'm toned, like there isn't the body fat to keep me warm. I also struggle with the additional attention. It made me feel awful as it reminded me how shallow the world is.

I'd love to not have the fear of having the body I want.

I did have an epiphany today - what IF I allowed myself to just FEEL what I am feeling, regardless of whether I'm uncomfortable or not. So having the body I want is focusing on what it enables me to do, how strong I am, not what it looks like.

For you maybe focus on eating foods you enjoy, regardless of sugar , calories, focus on the enjoyment of eating, nothing off limits but generally in moderation, 80% good.

Also in reality if all food / weight issues were solved.....we would find something else to worry about. So maybe we just choose the worry wisely !

Stuckinarut100 · 29/06/2025 08:58

Thank you, yes trying to reframe it by thinking about looking stronger, I’ve had a few people ask me if I’ve lost weight which I haven’t but it’s where my shape has changed.

Does it really matter why you overeat?

Gillian Riley’s approach to overcoming overeating is the only one that ever worked for me. It took me a while to really ‘get’ it and now I’m finally at peace with food. It’s a good feeling.

hope you find what works for you.
