Pooing in public loos - yes or no?

Inspired by about half of the posts in this thread (which is basically on a different topic, but its OP mentioned public loos and things kept, er, moving).

It seems that MN is totally split on whether having a poo in a public loo (or, presumably, a pub, the library, the office, anywhere that isn't your home or your hotel) is either "the worst thing imaginable", or "completely normal, what's all the fuss about?".

Embarrassing travel culture shocks | Mumsnet

Since it’s summer and holiday season I thought it might be fun to share some silly or funny or embarrassing cultural shocks we’ve all had when travell...

When I have to poo, I have to poo. Going in a public loo doesn’t bother me, I regularly go in my local Tesco for example as something about shopping often sets me off.

However, when I worked in the office I would hate going in the work loos. I would use the facilities on the unoccupied floor above.
There is a big different between pooing next to a stranger and pooing next to a colleague 🤣

AnonKat · 24/06/2025 19:41

I have IBD if i have to go then i gotta go. Its a bodily function, no worse than urinating.

CeliaInside · 24/06/2025 19:44

You know you’re not allowed to start a thread about a thread?

JoeTheDrummer · 24/06/2025 19:45

I wouldn’t think twice about pooing in a public loo. I run a lot which seems to get my bowels going, so I know the location of every public loo on my running routes!

Mingenious · 24/06/2025 19:45

Of course, it’s a toilet.

SantaToSSD · 24/06/2025 19:46

I'd prefer not to but I have IBS and often don't have the choice so yes, I poo in public loos. I'm never going to see the people again so if they are truly public loos that bit doesn't bother me. It's a bit more embarrassing when you have to go at work and a colleague follows you in.

taptaroundtheworld · 24/06/2025 19:46

There was another thread recently where someone stated that if someone had a poo in the ladies, it must have been a man. Women would never do that. the mind boggles.

Orangemintcream · 24/06/2025 19:46

Well I would try not to but if you’ve got to go you’ve got to go.

CharlotteFlax · 24/06/2025 19:46

Ideally, no!

If it's got to be done it's got to be done though and I wouldn't hold it in (unless the toilet was like one in Trainspotting)

Iscumaliom · 24/06/2025 19:51

I'm going to put myself as a weirdo but I never need to go when I'm out of the house. I don't hold it in, it's just not something my body wants to do. When I'm on holiday it's a bit of a pain because I always end up constipated before my body finally allows me to go on day 4 or 5 in my hotel room. I think I just have shy bowels. At home, fine, regular as clockwork but I've never in my life been walking around tesco or somewhere and suddenly needed to shit.

I'm summary I have no problem with other people shitting in public toilets but it's not something I ever need to do.

RubieChewsDay · 24/06/2025 19:56

If I have to choose between going for a poo in a public toilet or shitting my pants then I'm going to choose the public toilet option every single time! Delighted for the people who get to not make that choice but my second child had a 99thcentile head and I no longer have the luxury.

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 24/06/2025 19:57

I don't go out my my way to poo in public loos, but when you've gotta go, you've gotta go.

Branleuse · 24/06/2025 19:59

You can't beat a McShit.

ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 24/06/2025 20:01

Of course. Why wouldn't you? It's what they're for. Use them or lose them!

IberianBlackout · 24/06/2025 20:04

Personally I don’t just because I must have some weird mental block, but I don’t see anything wrong as long as you clean up after yourself.

We have a 💩 bandit at work who doesn’t clean up after herself and it’s shit (ha!).

I get this when camping. No reason for it to happen but often takes a few days before normality resumes.

TonTonMacoute · 24/06/2025 20:10

Do people carry round corks with them or something? If you gotta go, you gotta go, and if the only available option is a public loo that public loo it is - even in France, which is a whole other story!

aintnospringchicken · 24/06/2025 20:11

Like others have said,If you’ve got to go,you’ve got to go.
I have IBS and at times I’ve had no choice but to use a public toilet to poo in.
On more than one occasion I’ve had to abandon a trolley full of shopping in the middle of an aisle and quickly make my way to the supermarket toilets. Not ideal, but don’t have a choice.

I think this is me too.

Also, I could be at work at 10am and think hmm, I could do with a poo. And then just go when I get home at 6pm with zero discomfort or ill effects.

Fortunate to have healthy bowels I guess. Probably something ti do with the 70g fibre I get through a day!

Idontknowhatnametochoose · 24/06/2025 20:12

Yes.

I have no choice.

It doesn't bother me though- I don't worry about germs and stuff. I wash my hands and that's that.

EddieVeddersfoxymop · 24/06/2025 20:13

I dont, mainly because I can't. I never need to go when out, my bowels only operate in the safety of a home bathroom. Which makes for great fun on holiday 🤔 My teen DD is the same - bowels just pause when out and can literally feel them start up when back home. Covid horrified me whenever I worked out that my DH must shit freely at work - when he was forced to work home I was genuinely surprised that he pooped more than the once a week at home 🤣🤣🤣

Ponderingwindow · 24/06/2025 20:14

I marvel that people have a choice about this.

pinkdelight · 24/06/2025 20:20

I’ll go when and where I need to. No biggie at all. Blew my mind to find out people had hang ups about it and wouldn’t go in public loos etc.

RaininSummer · 24/06/2025 20:20

I find this so odd. Surely you just go when you need to and use the loo wherever you are assuming you have access to it.

MegaClutterSlut · 24/06/2025 20:24

Will only ever poo at home, dds the same. She doesn't go for a poo when she stays round mils for a few days. Dh has ibs, so uses any toilet as he will literally shit himself if he didn't
