Where on earth are you going? Desperate to have something to look forward to but everything is so expensive. UK or abroad. We have no camping kit or desire to buy right now, which I think rules that out

OP posts:
Phonicshaskilledmeoff · 23/06/2025 22:54

We did Netherlands centreparks last year at was less than half uk price. All activities were reasonably priced too. We took channel tunnel. As price is per car not per person.

Doing eurocamp this year. Channel tunnel again. It’s quite an expensive campsite because of location, but you can get them for 400 ish a week.

Beautiful two bed cottage in West Yorkshire with a hot tub for a week - £700.

It'll be my third visit and I'll tag on a few days in Harrogate. I'm going solo, taking lots of books and crafty/arty bits and planning to just mooch and eat lots of nice food and relax.

caringcarer · 24/06/2025 00:40

Try looking on Travel Zoo. They offer budget breaks often with flights and accommodation too for very low costs.

AnotherNewName456 · 24/06/2025 08:38

@MadamePeriwinkle would you mind messaging me the details of the cottage with hot tub please? It sounds great.

Ninkynonkpinkyponks · 24/06/2025 08:42

Eurocamp in France first week of September. Really good value

Spinachpastapicker · 24/06/2025 08:49

@mindutopiayour. Spanish trip sounds blissful!

CeeJay81 · 24/06/2025 08:57

This year our only family holiday is a weekend at Haven, £300ish plus spending. I've got a european city break with a friend too, £350(flights and hotel). Probably just over £1000 in total, if you include spending money. Looking at a cheapish holiday in Turkey for next year. We don't have a huge budget either. We are lucky that we have been able to do term time holidays.

Bootlips · 23/06/2025 19:07

4 of us going for 3 weeks to USA. 3 adults 1 child, for pricing purposes. Flying business, 2 different hotels, car rental. We're massive foodies so we've got some lovely restaurants booked. Circa £13k in total

Edited

Yeah cos £13K is a totally realistic budget for most people ConfusedConfusedConfused you just wanted to boast didn’t you. Hmm

Try Lakeland retreats. https://www.lakelandretreats.com

They are a family run cottage company in the Lakes. Really beautiful cottages, very clean in great locations. And they don't hike their prices up horribly in high season. You can still get a family cottage for £800-900 in school holidays. Self catering keeps the cost down. Climbing hills, wild swimming and messing about at the water's edge is free. You could do a week for the family including treats like going on the steam boat or hiring kayaks or visiting Beatrix Potter's cottage etc for £1,500 easily, for a lot less if you are careful.

Similar companies have far nastier places for more money. We discovered them during lockdown when we couldn't travel abroad and I always recommend them.

If you are very broke, Haven are brilliant. Beachside caravan holidays with on site swimming pools and playparks for about £400 in season, and £100 in low season. Romney Sands is gorgeous.

Lakeland Retreats - Holiday Cottages in the Lake District

Lakeland Retreats is a local family company sharing our love of the Lakes through beautiful holiday cottages and excellent customer service.

I’m going to Corfu 17-25th July. Self catering in a lovely clean apartment with restaurant and pool, 4 minutes from the beach. Flights were £125 each return and the hotel room is £500 and sleeps up to 4. Transfers are £30 each…. so £280 each? I’m pet happy with that. I’m finding myself and my 17 yo daughter and our budget is €100 and that’s pretty decent tbh. That will get us a cooked breakfast/fruit waffles with drinks (€20-22) , a pitta gyros and drink for lunch (€12) and an an evening meal like stuffed/souvlaki/pizza with drinks €30-40 from any of the dozens of restaurants around. Some days cities be more expensive but some days are always cheaper too and I much prefer sc as you can try all different food.

taking the family kids to euro Disney in October for happen half term. caravan near Paris was £150. Return ferries are £300. Petrol will be £250 ish so less than £100 each plus 2day Disney tickets. We will be taking our own food and keeping costs as low as possible.

I’m also going on a canary island cruise in November with my DH, dd and dgs. That was £1500 for 12 days for all of us. Budgeting £250 for drinks for the entire trip and doing our own day trips on public transit so that’s about £250. So £500 each.

ARichWomansWorld · 24/06/2025 09:07

DS and his GF are off to an AI in Greece for 8 nights, it’s a really lovely resort but it’s out of school hols in a couple of days time. It’s costing £850 each. They are also getting lifts to the airport from her parents. Both sets of parents live near decent size regional airports, it was £200 more to fly from the one near us.

jaggededger · 24/06/2025 09:08

Are you travelling alone/with partner or with kids?
We do house/dog sitting and we’ve had four lovely holidays at the coast this year with a dog as an added bonus. It’s about £75 to join if you get a discount code.
You can do them abroad using the same app but it doesn’t really appeal to me looking after a dog abroad due to the heat (if you like cats it could work though)

Which site are you staying on? Being nosey as would like to do this 😃

We're Dutch and are going to Eurocamp Heuvelrug. It's got a beautiful swimming lake in the forest and the bus stop outside goes straight into beautiful Utrecht, home to Miffy and a good railway museum. It's cycle distance to the excellent military museum, and close to Amersfoort which is nice for a potter. Full disclaimer, we live in Utrecht but can't cope with the planning required to take the baby further than 10 bus stops at the moment Grin

Crikeyalmighty · 24/06/2025 09:21

@Paaseitjes I love Utrecht - brilliant city

LazySunbedDays · 24/06/2025 09:24

Kardamena is our go to for an affordable holiday, we did a week in June for £450pp excluding spending money which can be as much or as little as you like, one day we had fresh bagettes in a cafe for lunch €4 or others a full meal with wine €25/30
We have Madeira in sept for £420pp
We’re not bothered about fancy 5* hotels, it has to be clean and have a pool though that way we can afford 2/3 holidays a year plus.

doodleschnoodle · 24/06/2025 09:27

We are doing Eurocamp, our accommodation is £1700 but that’s the top range largest chalet as 6 of us going. If you stayed in a smaller more basic one or even one of the pre-made tents they do it will be a lot less, I saw it for £500 or so. We are driving there and ferry back (we are doing Disneyland first which is a whole other ball game of expense!).

Don’t plan to do any real cooking, barbecues, eating out, lots of bread and cheese and ham for ‘home’.

Thaawtsom · 24/06/2025 09:30

We're going to off season skiing alps. Self catered accommodation for 8 is cheap (£800 for the week). Getting there can be cheap(er) if you drive; we are flying and renting cars which is more expensive.

Am805463 · 24/06/2025 09:43

We just did a last minute week in Florida for £360 each! Booked 5 days before with Tui, kids had a fab time.

scotchbonnetface · 24/06/2025 09:46

sciaticafanatica · 23/06/2025 19:33

We went to Bilbao.
it was fabulous .
cheap flights and a central hotel.
friendly people and trips to the beach or just wandering around.
food and drinks cheap, lovely and plentiful

Where did you fly from/in to to get to Bilbao? I’ve been looking for a northern Spain holiday and had no idea where to start!

TwoLeggedGrooveMachine · 24/06/2025 09:48

We’ve got a week in the lakes in August plus two nights hotel and attraction on the way. Total cost £800 for 4.

Going to Netherlands Eurocamp in October half term. 6 nights 3 bed chalet, overnight ferries Harwich to Hook of Holland and 1 night/2 day at Efteling theme park £1,700.

sciaticafanatica · 24/06/2025 09:51

@scotchbonnetfacewe flew easyJet from Manchester

Thanks for this, I totally forgot about the Harwich crossing. Hull is ridiculously expensive, do you have any site recommendations once in the Netherlands?

Mintsj · 25/06/2025 22:27

You can make it more affordable by cutting the length. In the past 6 years, my longest holiday has been 2 nights. Been great!

Harwich can be quite reasonable for the distance - it’s worth looking on cashback sites (or Blue Light Card if you have it) as there are often deals available.

We are going to Duinrell but that’s only worth the premium if you want theme park rides. I wanted to combine it with Beekse Bergen this year but was overruled, so we haven’t been anywhere other than Duinrell but we found the Netherlands very easy.
