What non-obvious things make a house feel clean?

Obviously you can have a clean sink, loo, etc. but I think there are some non-obvious things that help make a house look and feel clean and I want to know what they are! My house never feels like this and some other people’s homes do. I feel like I’m missing crucial knowledge of how this works.

One thing I’ve just discovered is that the grout between our kitchen floor tiles hasn’t been sealed and that’s why it’s always so grubby. Things like that.

What else can I do to help my house feel clean, fresh and pleasant apart from the obvious?

Thank you!

Following for interest. An interior perfume? I use one of those.

Definitely clean kitchen sink, toilet and bed made.
I like a nice fruity Yankee candle flickering away.
Also windows open for fresh air!

franke · 18/06/2025 22:29

Yep, grout. Skirting boards.

Cherrypineapplecocktail · 18/06/2025 22:31

Everything in its place and tidy.

Pre children I likedmy house to look like a show home. Now with 2 dc I go for tidy and organised. Beds always made. Everywhere clean etc.

DoubleShotEspresso · 18/06/2025 22:33

All the above and…
-Skirting boards
-Door frames
-Uncluttered hallway
-Fresh (looked after) houseplants
-Clean & clear surfaces
-wiring tucked away from electrics
-Picture frames polished
-Windows opened and ckeaned regularly
-Decent laundry routine
-Clean towels
-Kitchen cloths and sponges need a “place”

I’ve just washed my dog and the dog’s bed and I think it’s freshened up my kitchen. Also helps when I clear out the massive pile of shoes from by the front door. Taking the bins out daily. Clean bathroom and loo. Hoovering under furniture now and again helps as well, inside sofa cushions etc

ThymeSageRosemary · 18/06/2025 22:34

At least one bare surface in every room
Clean light and plug switches
Clean windows

Strangecat · 18/06/2025 22:34

a tidy house, clutter free, smelling fresh

ChopstickNovice · 18/06/2025 22:35

Well cared for houseplants. Fresh air circulating. Laundry not hanging about (although sometimes it has to be!)

Custardapples · 18/06/2025 22:37

Skirting boards is a good one.

We have a free-standing cooker and I think it’s never go to look as tidy as a built in one.

Our floors are atrocious throughout tbh but we don’t have the funds for new flooring and carpets.

Floofy pillows on the sofa? Sealant on those tiny cracks you get on the stair skirting? Hoping for little things that are doable on a budget.

Horrified to report that a bit of cif on every window in the house and the doorframe has made the place look much more put together. Skirting boards need sanding and repainting next, although i have awful worn carpets i can't afford to replace so it's window dressing. Im always envious of people with new builds as I feel like it's so easy for them to look clean!

Pinkrabitt · 18/06/2025 22:46

Minimalism.

I also bought a radiator duster today and OMG it is disgusting the amount of dust hiding in every single radiator in my house. I could only do two before I had to stop as I couldn't breathe! Going to put a mask on to do the rest.

We have a new build and I agree it has been really easy to make it look clean. It’s v helpful when you’re time poor, you just do a couple of bits and it’s easily ten times cleaner than my parents older homes

Thinlyveiled · 18/06/2025 22:51

Where can i get radiator duster?

The person I know who always has a spotless house loves cleaning and has very little stuff. So they have little to move around to clean and are always cleaning. I just don't have that gene to do so much cleaning. I'm working on getting rid of stuff.

Argh, didn't mean to quote the OP and can't edit to remove the quote 😞

No shoes left by the door
no clutter on tables or surfaces
everurbing has a home
if it doesn't have a home bin or donate
polished taps
air freshener
aired duvet and made bed with sheets tucked
no clutter is the main one. I cannot bear it and it always makes houses look messy.
hoover daily. I have done since having DD.

Yes - this is what I need. I’m not sure minimalism is possible for us at the moment but a bit of CIF on the window frames I can do.

The minimalist look im a minimalist.
Windows open.
No pets.
White plain walls.
No clutter.
No pitchers every where.

Tooteefrootee · 18/06/2025 23:04

Buy a robot hoover/mop. Daily cleaning, low hassle.

sparrowflewdown · 18/06/2025 23:05

Yes, checking in.

YetAnotherNewNameAgain · 18/06/2025 23:12

Clear floors (especially under things)
clean behind units and sofas
clean in and under drawers

basically cleans all the hidden spaces.

and declutter

Anxioustealady · 18/06/2025 23:15

Hoover cobwebs from ceilings and vents

BestZebbie · 18/06/2025 23:15

Wash the curtains with fabric conditioner, then they are clean and also the room is fragranced by them (and mysteriously will also stop smelling very faintly of unwashed slightly dusty fabric).
