Stupid and expensive mistakes - feeling like crap tonight

A bird shit on the bonnet of my car a few weeks ago in the work car park, I then took ill and I have been off sick from work and I have had various other personal stuff going on and I just didn’t get round to taking it to the car wash until today. I got home and I have realised it has eaten away at the paint, took it the local body shop and it needs a full bonnet respray at £500+. It’s a lease car and goes back in 2 months so I have no choice but to fix it but I feel like such an idiot. Someone please tell me your stupid and expensive mistakes and make me feel a tiny bit better.

Go to a big Halfords where they do small jobs, and ask if T Cut will sort this

I thought lease companies just send them straight to action? I’ve had it almost 2 years and it is immaculate apart from this.

We bought our current car from Toyota as it was coming back from lease. 4 years and 30,000 miles. They put everything external back to perfect condition. Since this involved respraying the rear bumper we asked for reversing radar and this was added at no extra charge (they were happy to see us, as they didn't have to do all the work to put the car in the second hand bit of the showroom).

Then today I had a bit of a prang 😳, so it's going to be having a new front bumper and left wheel arch, and the excess is £250. Oh well, at least I'm back on topic now. 🤪

DH left a pack of chocolate biscuits out and our Labrador ate them, packet and all. It cost £250 at the emergency vet (obviously it was a Sunday!)

Our bulldog ate half a pound of butter I had carelessly left on the kitchen table (intelligent dog 😡). He was on a drip for three days and the bill was the wrong side of £1k. He had pancreatitis, which could have killed him, from eating the butter - which is dangerous stuff for dogs. Happily he lived several more years and died peacefully in his sleep. His other great moment was when he was defeated in an argument by a moth!

I got back from walking the dogs and fed up with my tatty old bag, threw it straight in the bin. The bin was full, it was bin day the next day so took it out. Next day, after the bin men had been, went to go out in the car. Couldn't find the car key anywhere. Yep, it was in the bag I'd thrown into the bin.

Also, picked my car up from having the bumper fixed from where I'd reversed into a low wall. Did a 3-point turn about 30 seconds later - and reversed into another wall. Drove straight back to the garage very sheepishly!

Invest in a mattress topper?

I did try one (lent to me by a friend) but the mattress still feels so hard underneath. I think maybe I'm one of those people who needs a soft mattress. Apparently some people need and prefer a firm one - I suppose we're all different.

Luckily I still have my old mattress so am just using that one for now.

uncomfortablydumb60 · 18/06/2025 00:35

T cut will sort that out Don't stress

NaeRolls · 18/06/2025 00:37

2025ismybestyear · 17/06/2025 22:58

My mattress is medium firm and it's too bloody soft. I get on it and feel like it's all going to sink and wake up in pain and can't move for a while.

It's so strange how different we all are! I realise now that I need a soft mattress! For whatever reason.

I'm sorry you're struggling with yours.

NaeRolls · 18/06/2025 00:39

missymousey · 17/06/2025 23:05

Can you get a mattress topper? Makes massive difference.

I borrowed one from a friend and it didn't help much - maybe I should try out a different one. I still have my old soft mattress so am using that for now.

NaeRolls · 18/06/2025 00:44

Just remembered another one - came back a bit tipsy from a night out and dropped my phone in the loo.

Edited to add - I fished it out and put it straight into a bowl of uncooked rice but it turns out that is nonsense and doesn't work haha

MsAmerica · 18/06/2025 01:41

I stupidly missed a last bus home and had to spend a fortune on a taxi.

Wait... can bird shit damage a car?! Surely that's a pretty significant design flaw? Think the garage is trying to rip you off OP. I certainly hope so, because my car has bird poo on it most of the time (very leafy car park at work), and I've never given it a second thought!

Yes, it severely damages paintwork, especially modern water based lacquers. They are not trying to rip the OP off.

It’s acidic and damages the lacquer. Some are worse than others but it’s best to clean it off straight away as if you leave it, that’s when you get the same issues op has

op start with the cheap options first, so go to Halfords and get some coloured polish. That should do it (it’ll take some effort but it’s worth it)

spicemaiden · 18/06/2025 08:15

It be giving t-cut a try first.

MauriceTheMussel · 18/06/2025 08:19

Why do I feel like this bonnet might come out looking like Whistler’s Mother in the Bean movie??

forgodssakes · 18/06/2025 08:46

I have found a local detailer who is willing to come round on Tuesday and try and machine polish it out for £30

Zippedydodah · 18/06/2025 10:12

Seagull poo is lethal for car paintwork, it sets like concrete and definitely damages paintwork learned the hard way

forgodssakes · 18/06/2025 10:50

I don’t even live anywhere near the sea ffs

Zeborah · 18/06/2025 10:55

I’ve always had leased cars & you normally get a little bit of leeway. Their charge on you may be much less than your estimate; I’d leave it tbh but maybe just use some t-cut on it

@forgodssakes I’ll make you feel better with my stupid mistake. We hired a van to move stuff from our flat to house to save costs.

I ended up reversing into a post which I didn’t see in the rear mirror.

Ended up costing a fortune to fix, would have been cheaper to hire a removals company.

To cheer us up, I got us wine and chips, handed the bags to my husband thinking he could see there were bottles in the bag and would carefully put them down but no he threw them on the floor!

I heard them smash but that wasn’t the end somehow we were left with a hole in the floor tile from where he dropped the bottles xx

🤣 and 😨

Oh no!
The same Lab also ate a lot of butter. I didn't even know that was dangerous! Your bulldog sounds like he was a character 😍

its not dangerous in moderate amounts. Any fat in large amounts all at once can trigger pancreatitis in dogs and also in humans. Basically what happens is the pancreas overworks itself trying to produce enough pancreatic enzyme to break the fat down. The amount that will trigger it varies from person and dog to person and dog and there is broadly some evidence for a genetic component too.

WitcheryDivine · 18/06/2025 13:03

Our puppy managed to get up on the table and eat a whole block of butter once and we were very worried but she just slept very well and woke up with incredibly glossy fur.

I’ve sent the pictures to a couple of other bodywork specialists and they’ve all said the same so I don’t know what to do .

They are all going to tell you the most expensive option. Get someone who does smart mobile repairs to see what they think.

You’re not stupid I had no idea bird poop could damage a car 😵‍💫

It is even worse if the bird eats berries.
