Stupid and expensive mistakes - feeling like crap tonight

A bird shit on the bonnet of my car a few weeks ago in the work car park, I then took ill and I have been off sick from work and I have had various other personal stuff going on and I just didn’t get round to taking it to the car wash until today. I got home and I have realised it has eaten away at the paint, took it the local body shop and it needs a full bonnet respray at £500+. It’s a lease car and goes back in 2 months so I have no choice but to fix it but I feel like such an idiot. Someone please tell me your stupid and expensive mistakes and make me feel a tiny bit better.

They saw a woman coming, and trying to take you for a idiot. Use polish and elbow grease. All male garages are like that.

This.

ThatCyanCat · 17/06/2025 22:23

Get a man to make a couple of inquiries and just check you aren't being screwed because you're a woman. We had a leak recently and the quotes given to me were literally ten times the ones given to my husband.

I’ve sent the pictures to a couple of other bodywork specialists and they’ve all said the same so I don’t know what to do .

Try t cut, it removed a few marks from mine before I sent it back

Ermmm because they all want to respray your car bonnet and charge you for it? At least give Chips Away a shout, they have done really good work a couple of times for me...neither were my fault I hasten to add.

NaeRolls · 17/06/2025 22:28

I stupidly bought a new mattress (Queen XL) online and chose 'medium-firm'. It is much too firm for me and I cannot sleep on it.

The store doesn't refund or exchange mattresses.

I have learned a very expensive lesson: Always try out a mattress before buying it.

CanOfMangoTango · 17/06/2025 22:29

Third the advice for chips away.

Give it a go with some t cut first though.

Boreded · 17/06/2025 22:33

I would just go to a place that doesn’t do resprays, then they won’t try to get you to have one, they’ll get a colour match paint like I did with mine and sort it out.

WaneyEdge · 17/06/2025 22:33

I was about 19, bought some Ralph Lauren sunglasses in the sale in Selfridges or somewhere similar. Wearing them in the garden to read my book, heard the doorbell, tucked glasses in my top, bent to move my drink before I got up and kicked it over, glasses fell on the patio and scratched the right lens. Right across the middle. 😫

PennywisePoundFoolish · 17/06/2025 22:33

Someone crashed into FIL's car and it needed bodywork done. When he collected it, he drove it straight into a post!

Gettingfitorbust · 17/06/2025 22:37

Do you clean your bathroom?

Get some car polish or maybe T-Cut and apply the same amount of elbow grease on the car bonnet.

Kattekittt · 17/06/2025 22:37

Coloured t cut would be well worth a try, then a coat of wax over the top. Try a detailer not a body shop

Ilovemyshed · 17/06/2025 22:39

Nickay · 17/06/2025 21:25

It might be worth trying a car detailer first. Mine gives good advice about paintwork and is experienced in using things like wet sanders and machine buffers that might be able to get a better finish. If you’re looking at a respray, you’ve nothing to lose and if it doesn’t get your car good enough to hand back, you’ve got that as a plan b

This^

buff it out yourself? Also some wear and tear is expected with a lease. This is hardly a scratch or dent.

Tryonemoretime · 17/06/2025 22:41

My expensive mistake was leaning forward as i opened the car door. Top of the door collided with my glasses
Deep gouge right across the lens. Needed new glasses.

Barney16 · 17/06/2025 22:41

Try Tcut first. I used it when I ran EXH car into the garden gate driving it back from the garage where, yep, it had been resprayed. Luckily he was away for work and by the time he was back I had fixed it.

Invest in a mattress topper?

MsOvary · 17/06/2025 22:45

T cut from Halfords should sort that.

TwoTierBbq · 17/06/2025 22:47

@Baninarama unfortunately I had to do an agreement rather than the laughing emoji that comment deserved.

Apparently laughing emoji have been weponised 🤔

2025ismybestyear · 17/06/2025 22:52

Getting married.

Vinvertebrate · 17/06/2025 22:57

My expensive mistake was hiring a nice convertible to drive up the Pacific Coast Highway to San Francisco. We decided to forego the pricey extra damage insurance. After hundreds of uneventful miles, I pulled up in front of the valet parking at our SF hotel and dragged all 4 panels along a massive concrete pillar (while a voice in my head was going “hmmm what’s that awful crunching noise?”) Spenny.

I would return the car as is - especially if you plan to get another from the same dealer.

Just leave it, the paint is cosmetic, eventually it will go rusty if it's metal, but that will take ages on the bonnet.

My dad drove around happily when I was a kid in a clapped out FSO-Polonez with one door orange the rest blue apart from some red primer along the sill where they had been welded.

Paint is largely form, you have the car for function primarily.

My mattress is medium firm and it's too bloody soft. I get on it and feel like it's all going to sink and wake up in pain and can't move for a while.

Can you get a mattress topper? Makes massive difference.

Bigsigh24 · 17/06/2025 23:06

Wasn’t paying attention when checking spice girls tickets online, years ago, pressed enter and accidentally bought two, £150 ish wasted, and I didn’t go either 😞

ignored reversing sensors on car , thought they were a ‘bit overzealous’ and reversed into wall, damaging wheel arch, it was a jaguar and expensive mistake !

Thought because the parking meter wasn’t working that this was a valid reason that they couldn’t charge. Not noticing the sign stating in these instances you have to call a number to pay, £100 fine for that one !

£200 for van hire for house move which was then delayed so couldn’t use it , and had to book (a different) one following week!

I really need to pay better attention x

Absolute rubbish, they are completely correct. A pro detailer may be able to improve it or even sort it by machine polishing or sanding then polishing but I’d expect to need to bonnet painting. You generally can’t do localised painting of a bonnet, it needs to be the whole thing.
