Scottish independence

Can someone explain to me like I’m stupid why Scotland can’t have independence from England

OP posts:
RandomNameSelection · 17/06/2025 19:29

Because it would be shit.

Signed,

a Scottish person.

Flossflower · 17/06/2025 19:32

Because not everyone in Scotland wants to be independent. They had a referendum on it and it was decided by a very narrow margin that they would stay in the United Kingdom.

Davros · 17/06/2025 19:32

They can, we’re not stopping them

TheNightingalesStarling · 17/06/2025 19:33

Because they held a democratic vote and the result of that was against independence

NC28 · 17/06/2025 19:35

Voted on it in 2014, 45% said yes, 55% said no.

There was an appetite for it, albeit not a strong enough one to tip the vote.

However, the SNP (who are essentially built on the idea that Scotland should be independent) have imploded in the last few years, so if there was another vote tomorrow I think it would be a 25/75% split in favour of staying as part of the UK.

The UK government is. They refused to allow the Scottish government to hold a referendum on the matter.

KnickerlessParsons · 17/06/2025 19:38

There’d be a lot more money for the rest of us if they did leave the uk.
The UK govt gives them about £50 billion a year.

No. Please don’t tell lies. They refused to allow a second referendum as there had already been a democratic referendum held and it had been agreed that it would be a once in a lifetime opportunity. The SNP have tried to repeatedly break that agreement and seem to think that if at first you don’t get what you want then just keep having another vote until it goes your way. They have a brass neck talking about democracy when they refuse to observe it themselves.

There was a referendum and it was decided against. It was agreed by both sides beforehand that it was a once in a generation referendum. You don’t then just have a second referendum. Believe me, I would have liked a second referendum on leaving the EU but you just have to accept it.

Radionowhere · 17/06/2025 21:37

Because we had a referendum. Once in a lifetime they said. I voted no. I would still vote no. I'm Scottish and British.

Aaron95 · 18/06/2025 07:21

KnickerlessParsons · 17/06/2025 19:43

They had a referendum.

And then there was a rather major change of circumstances when England voted to drag us out of the EU. The SNP then stood for election stating they would hold a second referendum and were elected but denied permission to hold a second vote.

InterestQ · 18/06/2025 07:26

If the English had been allowed to take part in this referendum we could have been shot of the finanacial millstone that is Scotland and saved a fortune!

Isyesterdaytomorrowtoday · 18/06/2025 07:30

Because we voted against it, and as it was ‘once in a lifetime’ I wouldn’t expect another for at least another 50 years. SNP are in such a bad position right now I’d be surprised if they’d want one either.

That’s not true at all. We had a referendum. It didn’t go the way the SNP wanted. They stamped their feet and tried to demand another like a toddler who didn’t get their own way. That’s not how real life works.

How is Scotland a financial millstone?
My understanding has always been that public spending is highest in the south east/London

We are going to have to disagree on this one. There are plenty of examples of referendums being rerun a short time after the original.

EvelynBeatrice · 18/06/2025 09:28

@Aaron95
We had a ‘once in a generation’ referendum. The Scottish voters voted no. What’s your suggestion? That we keep on having referendums every few years until you get the answer you want? I don’t suppose the No supporters will be accorded to the same right to reverse a Yes vote?

Total nonsense.

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 18/06/2025 09:32

No it wasn't.

There was nothing in the Edinburgh Agreement that specified anything about timescales for potential referenda or prohibited further ones. The "generation" thing was nothing more than a soundbite from a former politician.

FWIW the GFA considers a political generation to be 7 years.

The Union is supposedly a voluntary one, so that being the case, any party should have the right to leave at any point if they so choose.

Denying the right of a Sovereign people to determine their own Constitutional future proves that the assertion the Union is voluntary is total and utter myth.

Just a reminder that many in my family fought and died for this country as proud Scotsmen. Your comment is crass.

Independence is dead after the horrors of SNP rule

Scottishskifun · 18/06/2025 09:37

We had a referendum and the Scottish people voted to remain.

Even if the SNP got the power to call one tomorrow they wouldn't as they would lose again due to the current massive ineptitude of Scottish govt. They are very good at making promises and failing to deliver them in spectacular money wasting ways and then back track

Independence is dead after the horrors of SNP rule

Well that's an odd interpretation of "dead", because recent polling suggests it's now the preferred option of the majority of the Scottish population.

Yet again the nonsense assertion that the SNP and Independence are one and the same thing 🤔
