I love a good illogical school rule!

The email has come out. They don't need to wear blazers today due to weather.. on buses, in corridors, in lessons etc

However... they must carry it at all times. No leaving it home or in their lockers!

I know it doubles as a pencil case for many of them but would the world implode if they safely left them at home?

I agree with you. If blazers are not needed then leaving them at home makes sense.

urghhh47 · 17/06/2025 08:13

I often find it hard to believe that supposedly rational adults are in charge of schools. I hear this kind of bat shittery going on and I know that there aren't rational, logical adults running our schools. It begger belief!.

TheNightingalesStarling · 17/06/2025 08:14

At least their school has sensible guidelines about them being removed in corridors at a certain temperature. (They aren't compulsory in lessons at any time)

At ds's school they were only allowed to removed jumpers in the heat if the teachers told them to. The teachers rarely did though- can't understand why, I wouldn't want to teach sweaty kids- and so they boiled.

legyeleven · 17/06/2025 08:17

If I had my way uniforms would be gone altogether. They don’t make everyone look the same and they don’t save money! Kids (and parents) always find a way to show money (shoes bags and so on). Dress code is fine but uniforms are outdated

ShesTheAlbatross · 17/06/2025 08:17

God I can’t bear that genuinely pathetic sort of rule. There’s no way anyone can provide a rational reason for it.

ThursdayWaitingForChocolate · 17/06/2025 08:19

Can’t figure out how fainting in the heat is supposed to help learning…

namechangeGOT · 17/06/2025 08:33

Our school is the same OP.

I find it illogical that children in any school have to wear blazers at all winter or summer. It adds absolutely nothing.

Liondoesntsleepatnight · 17/06/2025 08:35

We had an email from school saying no blazer needed, so sent without but apparently they need to take them. Apparently we need to be mind readers to know this as the email didn’t say that.

Taytayslayslay · 17/06/2025 08:35

I'm so glad I went to a school without blazers (over 10 years since I left but still lol)! I was able to just take my cardigan off whenever, not wear it at all leave it home. I don't understand why they're so upright about it?

2chocolateoranges · 17/06/2025 08:39

I love a school uniform and a blazer , it means there is no fashion parade at school each day and makes them all look so smart, but I don’t see the point of them carrying them with them if they don’t need to wear them.

when mine were in high school, they could take the blazer off in class but had to wear it to move to the next class, where they could take it off again.

Michele09 · 17/06/2025 08:39

Dd can either wear a blazer with trousers or jumper with skirt but not both even in cold weather. What's wrong with trousers and jumper or blazer and skirt? Then in Sixth form no skirts allowed, different colour jumper to rest of school with trousers. No logic to any of it.

sashh · 17/06/2025 08:39

I can imagine the staff meeting. One senior member of staff arguing for no blazers and another demanding they stay so they end up with a bat shit crazy compromise.

WillYouDoTheFandango · 17/06/2025 08:45

We had this email during the hot spell in April. It’s hot today so send extra water as pupils must wear blazers until told they can remove them by a teacher. Followed by another email 10 mins later to say they don’t need to wear them but must carry them with them and not in their bags.

Why? What possible benefit is there to that?

TorturedParentsDepartment · 17/06/2025 08:50

We get told no blazers is fine - but they can't be substituted by hoodies, jumpers or anything. My kids were initially overjoyed at the chance to ditch the blazers but then realised they'd have to remove all the crap they cart around in the pockets of theirs - and put the blazers back on.

CantStopMoving · 17/06/2025 08:51

That is completely stupid. My child’s school is super strict on uniform but in hot weather thy say no ties and blazers required. Common sense surely?

Comedycook · 17/06/2025 08:53

An extra thing to carry/lose for absolutely no reason at all.... brilliant

I actively encourage mine to take them off so that there isn’t a sweaty smell in my classroom if they sit boiling in them all day

I agree completely. Unfortunately schools love a uniform, as it gives them something to “clamp down” on that actually requires very little work. It’s an easy win compared to tackling something like bullying. This is why a new head teacher will often implement uniform changes (usually making it stricter) - it’s implying they will be a tough new broom, when actually all they’re doing is passing the buck to the parents, who are the ones who have to fork out.

If school uniform is really supposed to be a great equaliser, why can’t it be black jeans and a white polo or similar, instead of making kids dress in expensive, completely impractical clothing that makes them look they are miniaturised office workers from 30 years ago?

This is the sort of twee nonsense we’re up against…

cryptide · 17/06/2025 08:59

I do hope all the staff will be carrying jackets and blazers around all day to set a good example.

Quite agree, the whole thing is unnecessary and many other countries do OK without them.

Totally agree (I am a teacher). The amount of time and effort wasted policing outdated uniform (skirts/shirts/ties/blazers) is ridiculous. I am strict teacher and get good behaviour in my classroom - would much rather they were always in PE kit - this could just a country wide single style mandatory and sold centrally -no need for specific school identity. One style of tracksuit trousers (no skirts) short sleeve polo and sweatshirt. Kids decide if they need to take the sweatshirt off…

It means the school uniform supplier sells more and gives the school a cut. It's blatantly corrupt.

Well said. One of the things I really didn't like about being a secondary school teacher was having to waste time dealing with school uniform breaches that I didn't care about.
