I love a good illogical school rule!

The email has come out. They don't need to wear blazers today due to weather.. on buses, in corridors, in lessons etc

However... they must carry it at all times. No leaving it home or in their lockers!

I know it doubles as a pencil case for many of them but would the world implode if they safely left them at home?

I actually think you should follow school
rules! But I think schools should stop and think sometimes. How is carrying a blazer round sensible

There is obviously a reason for a blazer so children can be identified to their relevant schools. So they don't need to wear it fine. But the do need to hold it so that can be identified with the school otherwise what's the point. I don't know why the OP is complaining it's not her holding the blazer anyways?!

Why do they need to be identified on a day to day basis! School tie also works for this!

Because they belong to a certain school? Not all schools have their logo on the tie. My DS doesn't.

How many blazers will be lost by the end of the week? We used to have to wear blazers all the time unless the head said it was too hot, but we didn't have to bring them to school if we weren't wearing them
Wtf is the point? Do the teachers think the temperature is suddenly going to drop and then the kids have to put their blazers back on?

You are really looking for a reason now. How would a blazer over your arm identify you. Ties tend to be the school colour

look schools need rules I get it but if they took a moment to stop and think then maybe more parents would feel inclined to back them up.

@TipsyPoster why do they need to be identified? Is it something like if they mess around in the local shops the owners know which school to call up? I’m struggling to see the logic of carrying the blazer and this is the only thing I can come up with.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 17/06/2025 10:07

Believe me, the teachers are often just as frustrated by the arbitrariness of the rules we are made to enforce. I'd get rid of school uniform too. Most of the world (or Europe at least) seems to manage perfectly well without it. And with workplaces increasingly 'dressing down' and the fact that kids can wear what they like at college and university, I honestly don't see the point.

MageQueen · 17/06/2025 10:07

WhatNoRaisins · 17/06/2025 09:50

I wish school uniforms could become more casual to reflect what's happened in workplaces. I'd rather see discipline be more about how the people involved are treating each other rather than uniform enforcement.

Yes, becuase also, I'm constantly bemused by the 6th formers around here who are supposed to wear business dress - but I can guarantee you that I haven't seen men OR women wearing what they wear in the office in 10 years. The boys all seem to wear light blue suits with ties and the girls are all wearing pencil skirts. It's bizarre. If any of them turned up to actual work in those clothes, they'd definitely look a bit odd!

Our school is the same OP.

I find it illogical that children in any school have to wear blazers at all winter or summer. It adds absolutely nothing.

I wonder when this all came about. Although my state school (many years ago) had a white shirt black skirt uniform, there were no blazers, we could wear whatever coat or jacket (or neither) we wanted. My kids went to state primary in 2000s and could wear whatever coat they wanted (private Seniors blazers only).

Even my ex, who has a very high flying job in an office environment, doesn’t wear a suit.

Some schools don't have blazers. Some schools (including whole countries fill of schools) don't have uniforms at all. They seem to manage not being 'identified to their school'.

RosesAndHellebores · 17/06/2025 10:11

Too many schools need a common sense transplant.

Mine are grown up now but how the HT, DHT and school secretary bristled when I wrote to say that whilst I had no objection to every 4 year old wearing a collar and tie, socks and closed in shoes when temps hit the mid 20s and above, it was a concern that staff had bare shoulders, flip flops and tee shirts and the men shirts and tee shirts. Should better examples not be set and if teacher comfort and coolness was important so was the comfort and coolness of infants.

Don't get me on the banning of water bottles for the milk children!

You'd think there would have been some learning over the prevailing 25 to 30 years.

Mischance · 17/06/2025 10:12

What does this tell the children? ... that school makes sense? ... that teachers want the best for them? ... that they are intended to enjoy school?
How can we expect children to take school seriously when they are confronted with this bollocks?!

I love a school uniform and a blazer , it means there is no fashion parade at school each day and makes them all look so smart, but I don’t see the point of them carrying them with them if they don’t need to wear them.

when mine were in high school, they could take the blazer off in class but had to wear it to move to the next class, where they could take it off again.

What a faff! That would be enough for me to have a meltdown as a grown up

BeaLola · 17/06/2025 10:12

I feel your pain - it's one thing I don't miss now that DS17 is on year 12 at a different school sixth form where they just wear what they like

When he was at secondary he had so many detentions ref uniform marks - he has ADHD and isn't the best organised or quickest to get changed - he'd pick detention marks up for his shirt being out at the front , for keeping his navy rugby socks on rather than changing back to black socks - his defense he had less than 5 mins to get completely changed from rugby into school gear and make it to the other side of the large campus before next lesson so he'd pull his shirt over his rugby top and trousers over his shorts ....

Mind you when he was bullied by a group of boys in year 7 and 8 Headmaster did nothing

Identified by whom? You can’t think of a single other way to be identified as belonging to a school other than an old fashioned, unfit for purpose garment?

MageQueen · 17/06/2025 10:13

BunnyLake · 17/06/2025 10:09

Even my ex, who has a very high flying job in an office environment, doesn’t wear a suit.

I work in financial services. The men still wear suits and ties for client meetings as a rule, but it's all dark blue/grey etc and if they aren't meeting clients, they're wearing open necked shirts as a rule. And even within that, it's quite common for them to wear an open necked shirt with a blazer when meeting clients.

And no woman wears suits at all any more. A jacket/blazer over a dress or something, maybe. But I haven't seen an proper suit on a woman in a long time.

Peaceandquietandacuppa · 17/06/2025 10:13

cryptide · 17/06/2025 09:01

It means the school uniform supplier sells more and gives the school a cut. It's blatantly corrupt.

And they will make even more £££ if half of them lose the blazer because they’re carrying it around instead of wearing it 🤣

WhatNoRaisins · 17/06/2025 10:13

Wouldn't you just stick your blazer in a bush before lobbing an egg or setting off a stink bomb or whatever the youth do these days?

Lourdes12 · 17/06/2025 10:15

Outdated nonsense, synthetic horrible material too

Lifelife · 17/06/2025 10:18

At least they are allowed to take them off I guess, my son’s school they are not allowed to take them off at any point.

Justwanttocomment · 17/06/2025 10:18

cryptide · 17/06/2025 08:59

I do hope all the staff will be carrying jackets and blazers around all day to set a good example.

In my school the male staff have to keep wearing a jacket and tie even when the kids can take theirs off.

I'm so glad I went to a school without blazers (over 10 years since I left but still lol)! I was able to just take my cardigan off whenever, not wear it at all leave it home. I don't understand why they're so upright about it?

We had a school blazer, but I don’t think that anybody wore it past the first week of the 1st year. We either had a winter coat, or just went in with jumpers, or in short-sleeved blouses, dependent on the weather.

There were no stipulations about which layers of clothing had to be worn, or need to gain permission to remove an outer layer.

It was a super-selective grammar, and the lack of blazer-wearing didn’t appear to negatively affect the exam results.

It seems crazy to have to carry the blazer if it doesn’t need to be worn; it’s a sure way for them to get lost, and they are not cheap!
