HELP! How can I get this mussel out?

JDM625 · 08/06/2025 12:34

Ok, this is the most ridiculous thing! I was scrubbing mussels for dinner lastnight, and one slippery fsucker flew out of my hand and went down the overflow pipe!

I've tried chopsticks, tongs, a knife, bottle brush but due to the angle, nothing is working. I can unscrew the S bend/trap underneath, but the hole within the overflow isn't wide enough to push the mussel through. Maybe I could push it up though?

Any other ideas to get it out before it stinks?

I just want to tell you all about this because it turned out so well, (apart from the left side being a bit wonky) but Froggy's "Andy McNab" eye disguise rectangle is made out of extra thick Royal Mail parcel bag plastic turned inside out for the black side, wrapped around and stuck on to a bit of cardboard insert from a packet of tights with sticky plaster dressing tape (didn't have any sellotape) and balanced on his nose.

I just hope at least some people are old enough know who the heck Andy McNab is.

It's a low tech approach but I'm quite pleased with it.

Never fear, OP. Greta Thunberg is en route in a Freedom Flotilla mini-submarine.
(Perhaps @Boiledbeetle could provide a suitable illustration?)

Maurice is out!!!!

I'm afraid its bad news though.😭

Today, we had flies circling the overflow pipe, so I suspected the worst.
I tried taking a photo down the overflow, for the non believers, and to check I wasn't going mad. He is on the left of the pic, but due to my phone camera position- its not clear.

DH fashioned the giant pipe cleaner into a scoop and managed to get him out!

I've blurred the body and scoop for those that don't want to see it.

RIP Maurice ✝❤️

Good news!
It is just a pity that he had such an ignominious death compared to dying gloriously in a pan of boiling water, or bathed in garlicky oil, or whatever you did to the others.
<<moment of silence for Maurice>>

MrsMoastyToasty · 11/06/2025 17:44

So sorry to hear about Maurice. My thoughts are with you at this sad time.
Please let us know the funeral arrangements. Will he be having a burial at sea (flushed down the loo)?

JDM625 · 11/06/2025 17:50

I should have said thank you to everyone who has supported us during this time. I'm sure DH was also questioning the existence of Maurice, until he also saw him on his phone.

We are now looking at funeral options- something I hadn't actually considered. 😥

I'll post properly later. We all just feel a bit numb at the moment.

I usually sympathise, rather than congratulate, when someone pulls a mussel but this is clearly an exceptional case, so well done!

Kangarude · 11/06/2025 18:32

Thinking of you all at this very sad time 🖤. I feel numb

HiddenInCubeOfCheese · 11/06/2025 18:41

fruitandvegoverload · 11/06/2025 18:44

Oh god. This is the outcome we all dreaded, I can't believe it. So young and full of life.

BreadInCaptivity · 11/06/2025 18:46

Can I suggest a 2 mins of silence and respect tomorrow to mark his passing. RIP

AdaColeman · 11/06/2025 18:56

Well, a satisfactory ending, well done to your DH @JDM625, but in future only buy ready prepared mussels, or even safer.....eat scallops instead.

Boiledbeetle · 11/06/2025 19:05

Tonight on Mussel TV in a special programme dedicated to our recently lost brother we will be looking at how it all went wrong for Maurice the Belfast sink one.

Was his ending a result of upbringing, misadventure or just bad luck?

One problem begets another. You know what those retired ex military couples in Southern Europe can be like. They never give up.

Obviously they're very upset about Maurice and it always brings on Froggy's PTSD when there's a trapped down a hole situation because he starts gibbeting about his time in the Special Boat Service and all his cave rescues.

They're both denying it profusely but I think they've been preloading on the balcony all afternoon and are now trying to work out how much money they've got out of this month's pension to blow it down their pub, "The One Eyed Nelson" on a grief stricken bender.

And yes, I know that's a supermarket loyalty card in Dory's headband and not a debit card but I'm too tired to argue with her.

That's orange coloured washing up liquid in the mug. I think I might retrain as a set designer if this thread doesn't run out of steam soon.

Lube and a fish slice is the traditional MN method of unsticking things isn't it?

Oh that thread was so funny. Is there still a poster with that name?

Yogic · 12/06/2025 09:32

I think 'All things bright and beautiful, all creatures great and small' would be an appropriate hymn for Maurice's send off [sobs]
