Be honest, how late do you let your dogs bark outside?

Neighbours two houses up - we’ve had 10pm, 11pm, midnight and 2am on successive nights. Middle aged man lives with his adult daughter - she seems to find it hilarious to hang out late outside while the dogs bark.

I’d go round to speak to them but frankly the dogs leap at you when they open the door so I’d rather not.

Such a shame cause everyone else on the street is considerate (others have dogs). There’s always one household. Keep hoping he’ll kick her out.

Never. If they start barking, they come inside.

Very inconsiderate behaviour, but I don't know what you can do about it realistically. Other than moving!

wwhatto · 06/06/2025 15:20

If my dogs are out barking in the garden during the day I bring them inside. Sometimes they bark at the odd cat or squirrel but I never let them continually bark and do nothing about it

Mossstitch · 06/06/2025 15:24

It's illegal after 11.00pm, your local council will have a noise nuisance form you can fill in online and they will get a letter ( think you remain anonymous to the dog owner if you wish) and if ignored can get a noise abatement notice which can lead to fines. In the middle of the process with a nuisance neighbour with a dog with severe separation anxiety who thinks it's alright to leave it howling til all hours🙄

I don't leave my dog to bark, ever, she gets bought in.
Ndn's garden is completely overgrown and is a haven for wildlife especially foxes, they drive ddog insane.
My neighbours are probably more irritated by my screaming "stop barking, get indoors" 😁

Ilikewinter · 06/06/2025 15:38

Well clearly your neighbours are twats. I also don't leave my dog out barking, in fact he knows the rules - one bark and he comes running in before I even get chance to shout him !

BeNiceWhenItsFinished · 06/06/2025 16:41

Nobody should allow their dogs to bark like that. Totally antisocial and inconsiderate.

I've never allowed any of my dogs to bark unnecessarily at any time of the day or night. If they're barking to alert me to something I should know about, such as someone at the door, that's no problem, praise all round. But barking for silly reasons, such as a cat walking past, they'd be told to be quiet and brought back into the house. It sounds to me like the daughter's dogs are bored and that her laughing at them is encouraging their behaviour. She's very inconsiderate and I don't envy you.

ObliviousCoalmine · 06/06/2025 16:59

If he barks he gets brought in, regardless of the time of day/night.

ScrewedByFunding · 06/06/2025 17:05

Luckily our dog doesn't bark except from at the doorbell.

Largestlegocollectionever · 06/06/2025 17:12

I don’t ever allow them to bark, if they bark they get told off and brought inside

JDM625 · 06/06/2025 17:17

I don't let her bark anywhere!
She might bark and run to scare a pigeon or seagull from the garden, but its 1 woof.
Late at night, if I hear her bark in the garden, I know she has found a hedgehog. She doesn't understand that its curled up in a ball and doesn't want to play with her! 🙄I bring her inside straight away.

OP- Many councils have a dog noise policy. Keep a noise diary and check your councils website.

rightoguvnor · 06/06/2025 17:29

Obviously,if you let them out for their last wee you can’t avoid it if they bark at a fox or a rogue squirrel but I’m immediately on them with a shhh so that’s very limited.
i had a neighbour once whose terrier mix barked st every noise any time of day or night. Every time we went into our garden the dog would be jumping at the 6ft fence barking and they would let that go o for minutes at a time before suddenly shrieking the dogs name at the top of their voice. Made my life a misery for years, despite several attempts to solve it.
I’m absolutely a dog lover, always have at least one in residence, but to be honest I was relieved when that particular dog died. She had had a very stressful life.

Same and I usually let her out for last wee at 9pm so even if she did bark (rarely) it's still pretty early. There's no way I'd let her bark in the garden that late repeatedly.

My neighbours are like this and it drives me crazy.i wouldn’t mind if they call the dog in when it starts but they are too selfish.
my dogs go out for the last time at 9.30 but im at the door with my usual “bed” as soon as they start so no more than 20 seconds at most.they only try it on in the summer as in the winter they want to come back into the warm.

stargirl1701 · 06/06/2025 18:42

My dog rarely barks. Only is she gets a fright. Maybe 4 or 5 times since we got her age 8 weeks. She’s now 4. Working black Lab.

thistimelastweek · 06/06/2025 18:48

I have a yappy terrier; she's brought in if she barks.
She's not allowed out late at night because she would definitely disturb the neighbours. If she needs a wee, we take her for a quick walk on the lead.
Fortunately, she has a bladder of steel.

OonaStubbs · 06/06/2025 18:48

This is one of many reasons why dogs should be banned. Their incessant barking is enough to drive people insane.

Spidey66 · 06/06/2025 18:51

I admit, my dog does bark in the garden. Many of my neighbours have dogs, and there are frequent "chats" over the fence.

She's not allowed our till 9am and in by 8pm latest.

Where we used to live, she was let out at 7.30 am then I found out from my neighbours sister the barking in the morning annoyed him. I was horrified we were unknowingly annoying him and after that she wasn't allowed put till at least 9am.

Funnily enough, she only really barks in the garden, and rarely elsewhere.

Decisionsdecisions1 · 06/06/2025 21:38

I feel sorry for the dogs. They sound stressed, it’s not happy playing barking. One is a rescue dog.
Their immediate neighbours moved out. The new ones are also fed up but have moved their bedrooms to the front of the house to avoid the barking in the garden at night time.

Decisionsdecisions1 · 06/06/2025 21:40

I mean they bark intermittently from 7am onwards but I understand some dogs bark. It’s the night time barking that’s unreasonable.

Sometimes I wonder if they put the dogs outside to get a break from the barking inside…..we can see them jumping and barking at the front windows inside. They’re just such nervous dogs.

This 👆

Doesn't matter what time of day. He barks, he comes in.

glassesAreComplicated · 06/06/2025 22:07

My neighbours never let their dogs bark outside. I am always careful not to do anything that would make them bark because I know they will get in trouble and the owner won't know it was my fault. I always want to give a friendly wave to the dogs from the window, but have to resist. The dogs are scrupulously polite.

thaegumathteth · 06/06/2025 22:51

As others have said - if he barked he got brought in. Different obviously if it’s a single bark at a noise or something but more than that they come in.

echt · 07/06/2025 00:11

I always bring my dog in if he barks. At night it will be because he's seen a possum but in he comes. In the day it's because he's detected a strange car outside and is announcing it.

I never leave him outside unless I'm at home too. If I'm out, he's inside or in the car with me.

PiggyPigalle · 07/06/2025 01:15

Mine is last pee on the lead, he won't bark if not free.
