I think I missed the memo! What is the hype around ‘Jellycat’?

I've just seen a FB post where a poster has spent £180 on Jellycat ‘cheeses’?

My local gift shop sells them too.

I don't get it, what have I missed?

Palmpals are a cheaper alternative. DD wanted an egg at £25 but the palmpal is very similar and £7.

I was given as a birthday present one of (I think) the original Jellycat cushions about 30 years ago by my friend who went on to be a real fan. She bought it for me because I liked cats! The cushion is still on my sofa and still going strong 💕

I have a pencil case version of this! I think I've had it about 25 years or so.
my daughter collects the bunnies and we have some of the Christmas versions like reindeers and elves. They've got very expensive in recent years though!

I think many humans like to "collect" and I'd love to study the psychology behind it. Is it part of a OCD personality perhaps?

I think it's common and collecting Jellycats satisfies that craving.

I see it in myself...but I collect art materials!!!

Why do some people collect Funko pops, or Lego minifigures, or back in the day Beanie Babies? Expensive collectable toys, often linked back to childhood themes. Novelty soft toys slot into that category well.

DS was given one as a baby 12 years ago. So lovely and soft and when washed stayed lovely and soft and nasty stains came out super easily.

Most people don't really grow out of soft toys so all the different characters that are a bit more grown up just means that we don't need to feel embarrassed about it.

"Most people don't really grow out of soft toys"

Um, what are you basing that on?

I think she means they are like puppies or kittens. They are fluffy and appealing so only the most unresponsive unsusceptible just stop being able to grasp the appeal.

But some don’t get it. My uncle doesn’t even like live babies.

I think they're incredibly sweet, but very overpriced. A jellycat mad friend told me it's all made and sourced in the UK which is why they're so costly, but I haven't checked.

I compared the craze to Beanie Babies too in my head!

I think they are cute and people like them but I don't get the hype and find cuddly toys a pain to clean around.

Yes, I remembered the Beanie Babies because our local chippie has a stand of second hand ones for sale at a £1.00 each.

That made me reflect on the ‘collectability’ and ‘rarity’ factor. Not a good investment then…😊

Not got to ‘made and sourced’ in the UK but definitely a UK company.

JELLYCAT LTD - Company House.

Revenue of £200 million in 2023, gross profit of £130 million.

NOT BAD! 😀

What do I know about successful crazed and businesses? 😂

I definitely have too much time on my hands…😳

I did buy the Christmas Pudding when it first came out, ordered it online and when it arrived it looked so shit compared to the photo that I sent it back and got a refund! DD does have a big orange octopus though. It dangles from a shelf in her room. She prefers a squishmallow though.
