I think I missed the memo! What is the hype around ‘Jellycat’?

I've just seen a FB post where a poster has spent £180 on Jellycat ‘cheeses’?

My local gift shop sells them too.

I don't get it, what have I missed?

I think jellycat are sweet but so overpriced.

They're slowly going out of fashion I think, replaced by those godawful labubu keyrings. All the YouTubers and influencers are going crazy over them and they're awful.

PrincessDonut · 04/06/2025 18:03

No idea but my friend, who is 60, has spent an insane amount on these things. They aren’t even particularly attractive. Some kind of battered fish fillet, chips, a clam I think it was, Christmas pudding, mince pie, lots of weird vegetables and a ton more.
Bonkers.

may2025 · 04/06/2025 18:12

I would love to know this as well

TimeForRest · 04/06/2025 20:03

I suppose my known equivalent was ‘Beanie Babies’.

I'm assuming Jellycat are collectible, perhaps some rarities?

Marketing bollox prob using some influencer. Be gone in 1 year or less. Ignore.

minipie · 04/06/2025 21:27

They used to be something you might buy your child or a friend’s child. DC2 has a dogeared jellycat bunny she sleeps with.

For some reason they became fashionable a couple of years ago and started making all sorts of random soft toys, potato, football, cheese etc. and prices went up a lot. Yes collectible and putting out new toys all the time.

They are milking their moment in the sun and who can blame them?

Snakeandladder · 04/06/2025 21:28

I get it, they're so soft. But fuck me they are expensive!

Can't imagine my child ( or any child cuddling this one though…then again…😂)

It’s a fashion! Kids/ teens/ adults love them. I hit all my DGD one each as part of their Christmas presents and they loved them.
What’s wrong with a bit of joy?!

I love the mince pie!

My hockey mad friend has the hockey puck.

Why do people think that no one should like a thing just because they don’t?

Toddlerteaplease · 04/06/2025 22:27

My sister has a huge collection. Even the giant Christmas tree. I love them. But they are massively overpriced.

ivyleafgeranium · 04/06/2025 22:56

DD collected the bunnies from when she was about 7. She stopped a few years ago but is in her 20’s now so Jellycat has been around for a long time. They were just nice soft toys. Needless to say she has moved out and they are all still with us! Although, she did take her Marks And Spencer pink bunny that her 6 year old brother bought for her first Christmas. Aww…

Oh come on: you’d have to think that was cool to find in someone’s loo. They’re actually cute. Cute toilet tissue…

They are nice. Good quality, beautifully soft and tactile, and those bunnies can take on a washing machine cycle or three which means they have the longevity to become a child’s favourite and part of the family

Have you seen the macaroons? Or the strawberry tart?

CharlotteRumpling · 04/06/2025 23:05

Find them.hideously twee.

Have you got young children?
Twee doesn’t begin to describe a lot of the other tat they’d go for in lieu.

DS was given one as a baby 12 years ago. So lovely and soft and when washed stayed lovely and soft and nasty stains came out super easily.

Most people don't really grow out of soft toys so all the different characters that are a bit more grown up just means that we don't need to feel embarrassed about it.

NowIveSeenEverything · 04/06/2025 23:09

We're onto squishmallows now for practicality reasons, they double up as pillows, stepping stones and so on, which jellycats just don't. BUT I will buy the occasional jellycat - dd3 has a beloved candy cane which came in her Xmas stocking one year. She would also love a toilet roll, but she's very into poop atm.

They're super soft, cute, and v much a funnier version of the beanie babies we had in the 90s. Both my kids got several bunnies at birth from friends, it was the standard newborn gift for a while.

Yes it’s true they are going for a more tongue-in-cheek, grown-up vibe.

I’m not always sure what I think about that. I find myself scanning the selection when with my Dc as I’m half expecting to see a smiling, button-eyed Jelly Cat dildo staring out from the shop display.

No, my DC are grown.
Not so baffled by kids going for it. Just adults.

AppleAng35 · 04/06/2025 23:17

I think they’re lovely and so cute, my children have several. Much nicer than squishmallows or those awful TY ones with the big googly eyes. But admittedly I do think it’s weird when adults collect children’s toys, I wouldn’t buy any for myself. And the prices are silly.

TasWair · 04/06/2025 23:18

Lidl do rip-off Jellycat food bits for £3.99. the pizza, broccoli and ketchup bottles are very cute, and I am not a fan of cute soft toys usually!

Most people? That's a real stretch. Percentage wise, the amount of adults interested in soft toys is pretty low. I certainly have zero desire for any!

I bought a jellycat bunny for neighbours daughter when she was born, about 13 years ago. They weren’t expensive like they are now!

They are cute, but mad amounts of money!

One of my DC is into Squishmallows, so I have a house full of them! At least they aren’t too pricey.
