Alternatives to Dyson cordless vacuum (anyone else find them terrible?)

I have got through 3 Dyson cordless vacuums since about 2020 and they seem to be rubbish! They aways break just after the warranty expired. They ALWAYS get blocked, even though we just have a small home and normal requirements, no pet hair or anything, just the usual breakfast-time crumbs with a reception aged child and the like.

Is it widely known they are crap or am I missing something as I always thought they were supposed to be good! Has anyone else moved from Dyson to a different cordless vacuum they can recommend as better, and crucially doesn't get blocked every time it sucks up a crumb?

I agree Dysons are crap, I’ve been a cleaner for years and you will not find a better hoover than a Henry.

MemorableTrenchcoat · 03/06/2025 11:32

Why must it be cordless? Mains-powered machines are much more effective, and better value.

We have the shark one having had a couple of dysons . Once I’d got used to the weight (it is quite a lot heavier) I now much prefer the shark- it picks up a lot more, battery life is heaps better and has lasted a lot longer!

We went for a shark..folds down small..does whole house plugged in from hallway so definitely long wire. Only ever blocked once when teen hoovered a sock ?!

whensmynexthol1day · 03/06/2025 11:33

We have a Henry too just for full disclosure which I’d use for a ‘proper’ clean but this is fine for everyday crumbs

I love my Henry quick. I didn't think id want a bag one but actually I love it, it stops all the blockages.

tinyspiny · 03/06/2025 11:35

We have the shark that self empties when you put it back on its base and it’s excellent , I’m not a fan of dysons .

DepositSaverUpper · 03/06/2025 11:35

Like this. Lightweight too. Hated my Henry far too heavy for the stairs. And Dyson rubbish.

Henry Quick Cordless Stick Vac is epic! The suction on it is almost too powerful, I can’t use it in boost mode on my carpet as it’s too much, I have to use it on regular power. Best vacuum I’ve ever bought

mumofoneAlonebutokay · 03/06/2025 11:37

Sat here waiting for my Dyson to bloody charge so I can finish vacuuming the living room! 🙄

ButteredRadish · 03/06/2025 11:37

Ps, the Henry Quick does use pods (like bags) BUT…. It compresses all the dirt so you very rarely have to change them. Mine came with 6 pods about 19 months ago and I’ve only just put the 6th one in.

SandrenaIsMyBloodType · 03/06/2025 11:39

Yup. I had 2 cordless Dysons, neither of which were as good as they needed to be to justify the price. I now have a cordless Miele which wasn’t cheap but is sooooo much better that Dyson should be embarrassed.

ElleneAsanto · 03/06/2025 11:41

I’m very pleased with my Samsung vac. It’s a brand that always features strongly in the Which? magazine best buys.

Dysonworker · 03/06/2025 11:41

Doing my standard name change for any thread abouts Dysons 🤣

I used to work there and comparing Dyson performance to other vacuums was essentially my job.

Dysons are actually pretty shit when it comes to suction, durability and basically everything. I'd recommend a Shark, they came out top in virtually every test.

Also James Dyson is a total knob (I used to sit directly outside his office and could hear all his rants, plus he cultivated a very, very unhealthy/backstabbing working environment) so I wouldn't want to give him my money tbh

GingerBeverage · 03/06/2025 11:42

There are a lot of theories that Dyson vacs have planned obsolescence.

TheGrimSmile · 03/06/2025 11:46

I've had Dyson, Miele, Sebo, Henry and Shark. Henry is the most durable but bloody hard work to drag around (the big one) there's a reason all builders use them. They are great if you are strong. I think best all rounder for me has been my plug-in Shark. I love it.

cashmerecardigans · 03/06/2025 11:47

I have a Samsung jet and it’s brilliant. Got it on offer where they gave you money off if you traded in an old one. So I got a shiny new one and offloaded the rubbish Dyson at the same time 😀

There are a lot of theories that Dyson vacs have planned obsolescence.

Not obsolescence so much as they purposely have a limited life so people have to buy replacements. And yes I can confirm this is true. Had many conversations with the Dyson engineers about it.

PeatandDieselfan · 03/06/2025 11:50

We have an Ultenic cordless. Got it about 4 months ago. I absolutely love it, total game changer. Quick, light, easy to use and powerful.

TheGrimSmile · 03/06/2025 11:51

Sorry, just realised you want a cordless.

There are a lot of theories that Dyson vacs have planned obsolescence.

That goes for most consumer appliances, to be fair. For vacuum cleaners, Sebo is the main exception. Their consumer machines are based on their commercial ones, they last for years, and virtually every component can be replaced if it fails.

Very interesting!

mummyespresso · 03/06/2025 12:13

Right that's it! I've ordered a Henry cordless!

I have the Bosch unlimited 7. It’s great.

LeSpleendeParis · 03/06/2025 12:16

We’ve given up on Dysons and Sharks and gone back to a Henry!
