Andrew Lawrence (comedian) is being cancelled but doubling down (trigger warning)

TW: Liverpool crash

Andrew Lawrence is a comedian. He made a joke about the Liverpool crash earlier this week and is now being “cancelled” by many comedy venues and so on. Instead of apologizing, he’s doubling down and continuing to make jokes.

Im interested to hear peoples thoughts on this. Personally, I think it’s far too soon for jokes, and jokes about people being injured are rarely funny anyway. That said, I don’t know if it’s right to police jokes in this way?

Ginger haired man looks to camera. He seems to be staring. He is wearing a red T-shirt with a blue top over it. There is a bush and green grass behind him.

I wouldn't fuck with Liverpool. He sounds like a turd.

There’s a world of difference between Gervais’ intelligent and thought out gags and what Lawrence said. A lot of Gervais’ comedy is irony and victims are never the target of the joke.

I call BS. Gervais tells a joke where he's wanking over his daughter being molested by a paedophile.

Punching down at people with cerebral palsy isn't particularly intelligent either.

I actually think it’s stupid when people whinge about “cancel culture”.
No one is owed success, fame or a platform. If they do something that results in their fan base viewing them differently then too bad.
It’s not some left wing orchestrated thing, it’s literally people just thinking the person a bit of a dick head and not going out of their way to support them. The ex famous person fades into oblivion.

MadeUpName25 · 01/06/2025 17:06

He has every right to be weird.

There’s always someone somewhere who will be offended. So what?
I’m not into cancelling people for telling jokes I don’t find funny. It’s a slippery slope.

No one is “cancelled” for telling a joke though. People are allowed to make up their own mind, if they don’t want to pay to see his shows he will be cancelled by default. Who cares? He’s not owed success if people don’t like him.

Snorlaxo · 01/06/2025 17:57

There’s a market for appealing to Reform voting, MAGA hat wearing Tate fans.

Apologising isn’t going to revive his career where as his new audience will happily defend him from “lefties”

heroinechic · 01/06/2025 18:12

The joke wasn’t funny but neither are the ones about 9/11, Maddy McCann etc and that doesn’t stop comedians from telling them. I think it was a knee jerk reaction for comedy venues to ban him. It seems unjust unless they are going to comb through the repertoire of all the comedians they host, and remove any that have made jokes at the expense of other tragic events.

It's a pretty feeble joke. I hope he has better material than that.

He doesn't. That's why he's reduced to making outrage-bait twitter posts rather than being a successful comedian.

ChangeOfNameAujourdhui · 01/06/2025 18:30

I saw him a few years ago. It was the only time that I ever came close to walking out for comedy show. The level of misogyny, rape jokes etc. The only reason I didn’t stand up was-I’m embarrassed to say-I was frightened of what he would say in a relatively small venue if I stood up to leave. He’s a pretty hateful man and I guess that comedy clubs have had their fill of him -it’s probably not based on this joke alone.

ginasevern · 01/06/2025 18:34

I think it's a shame that anyone has to be cancelled just because they can't make an audience laugh without jokes about tragedies or cancer or disabilities. If a comedian from the 1970's was making similar jokes everyone on this thread would be expressing morally superior outrage. But because newer comedians are supposed to be "edgy and provocative" it's all OK and in the interests of free speech. Spoiler alert, it isn't. It's easy money appealing to the lowest common denominator.

Gervais is funny which is ultimately the litmus test of making jokes. Personally I find some of his stuff shock value for the sake of it, but his early sitcoms are great.

This fella isn't at all funny anyway which is why he resorts to pure shock value for attention. Gervais wouldn't joke about a tragedy or something awful that's literally just happened.

Were comedians telling purposely crass jokes about 9/11 ON 9/11/2001? If they did they'd have been raked over the coals.

There's no comedy in it when emotions are so raw and it's just happened. It's a complete dickhead thing to do. Personally I just wish he didn't get the attention he craved..he made jokes about a tragedy to earn money from the attention.. he's a scumbag.

I don't find Gervais funny and I find some of his material offensive. We have some big comedians in the UK who make their living writing 'shocking' material such as rape and paedophile jokes and mocking the disabled.

However my point is, even though I don't like their humour or find them funny, I don't want them banned from performing or de platformed.

I don't want them banned either but private companies don't have to be associated with someone who would exploit a tragedy for the sake of attention either.

I'd much rather not give them the attention they crave.

LogicalBlodge · 01/06/2025 19:32

He was already cancelled for racist comments so sounds like he has form.

Loads of comedians take things to the edge but it's usually done in a self deprecating way - not in an othering way.

TeachesOfPeaches · 01/06/2025 19:33

He has been like that for years

I've never known venues to turn down money so I presume it's public pressure and they want to be seen doing the right thing. People can make up their own minds on who they want to go and see.

From all accounts it was a pretty crap joke and he's got a lot of attention from it. I'd never heard of him until now.

This isn't happening in a vacuum, there's a trend to cancel people if some people on social media don't like them.

More than anything he just seems annoying and will now go away from the sane people 😭

(Edit, of course, what he said was disgusting)

Exactly! Let people make up their own minds. If no one finds him funny then they won’t attend his shows. It’s not up to the venues to be cancelling him or anyone else they don’t agree with. As I said it’s a slippery slope…

FightingFish · 01/06/2025 20:08

A lot of these blokes say unfunny and offensive things to get attention. They then do the rounds on the manosphere podcasts telling their cancellation story. It’s a living for them.

Then you're entitled to have him perform at the comedy club you run. And people who run other comedy clubs are also allowed to make their own decisions on who performs at theirs. It's a free country.

Of course it's up to the venues to cancel if they like if tickets aren't selling or are being returned. They're a business.

hoarahloux · 01/06/2025 21:10

I haven't heard of him before now, but what did he expect? Liverpudlians to roar with laughter and lift him on their shoulders?
