18yr old needing glasses

QuestPip · 31/05/2025 21:27

My DD 18 had eye test today as she kept saying she couldnt see things in the distance. Turns out she 1.75 in both eyes and has to wear glasses all the time. She's feeling anxious about this. Im guessing it's not something she will grow out of now.
My side of the family only have glasses for computer work etc but her dad wears the all the time. Thanks!

What is she anxious about? How the glasses look or the fact she needs them? She could look into laser or contact lenses

NeedingAGoodNap · 31/05/2025 21:29

Not sure what the question is here. Why does she feel anxious about wearing glasses?

QuestPip · 31/05/2025 21:36

Guess its just different for an 18yr old, how they will look. She;s picked out a loevly pair so sure itll be fine

Not really, no. My DH is -5.75 and can’t see a thing without his contacts. He doesn’t like how he looks wearing classes so wears contacts. I used to wear contacts before I got my eyes lasered. I was -3 in one eye and -3.75 in the other

cremebruleee · 31/05/2025 21:54

Well she needs to be able to see doesn’t she. I’ve worn glasses since I was 14, for that very reason. She’s being a bit odd about this really.

Of course she needs to be able to see! Im just asking and I think your being a 'bit odd' with your comment!

It's very, very, common for late teens, early twenties to wear glasses (or contacts) these days.

1.75 is marginal. I am assuming you mean -1.75, as her issue is distance. So she'll only need them for looking at the classroom board, driving or tv, but not for reading, or looking at a computer screen, for example.

Thank you for your help! Maybe that would be an option in the future

totally understand my daughter is 17 had glasses since she was 10. -3.25 but won’t wear them. will wear contacts though, they are very sensitive about how they look at that age and it’s not off to feel like they at all

You didn’t ask anything…

She might find them annoying when looking at close up things like reading. I always took mine off because I could see clearer close up without them. So don’t be concerned if she does that, it’s normal and is ok to do.

stargazer02 · 31/05/2025 22:23

Not really sure what you want to hear. Lots of people wearing glasses, and there's some fantastic options now. Many people choose them with plain lenses just for the look of them.

My DDs were both 7 when they got theirs though one for reading and the other for distance. Apparently up until about age 10 the eyes can adjust and improve. My youngest just got hers a year ago with one eye worse than other, but her test this week they've evened out with worst one improving.
Eldest is blind as a bat without hers and has been since about 12. Even so her lens arent overly thick.

RomainingCalm · 31/05/2025 22:24

Try not to be worried. Yes, she may need to wear glasses all the time and it’s unlikely that her sight will just improve over time but -1.75 isn’t massive.

Encourage her to find glasses she looks good in, maybe consider a couple of pairs and I’d also suggest she tries contact lenses so she has that as another option if she plays sport or doesn’t want to wear glasses on a night out.

DappledThings · 31/05/2025 22:24

She can't be unusual amongst her friends for wearing glasses is she? I started at 13 and didn't stand out then at all. DD has 2 in her class in glasses and they are only 7.

ZebraPrintt · 31/05/2025 22:55

What about contact lenses? I get why she'd be anxious to wear them, it's totally new to her but she'll get used to it I'm sure! My eyes are -4.75 I can't see a thing without glasses

Whatsgoingonherethenagain · 31/05/2025 22:57

Why not contact lens if she’s so worried about glasses?

FleurDeFleur · 31/05/2025 23:00

No 18 year old is going to stand out for wearing glasses! Loads of them do. They often go for big chunky frames.
It's fine.

Tiswa · 31/05/2025 23:01

-1.75 is nothing - but yes she should wear glasses all the time to stop it disintegrating as when it does it does fast
Dd is 16 and wears glasses but also has contact lenses disposable 10 at a time which she wears for going out etc.
glasses are fashionable at the moment (black fairly thick frames seem to be in as all four of my family - me DH DD and DS have them)

ExtensiveDebating · 31/05/2025 23:01

I would encourage her to try contact lenses once you get used to them it's like having perfect eyesight and is less hassle than wearing glasses.

Fractiontoomuchfennel · 31/05/2025 23:09

if she really doesn’t want to wear glasses have a chat with your optician about other options to slow down and reverse myopia in younger people. There a lot more options now. My son is in his teens and his eyesight jumped quite a bit last year. We went with Ortho K night time contact lenses and it has completely reversed his myopia. He doesn’t need glasses at all now. The contact lenses reshape the eye lense every night. He does have to wear them every night (or they will revert) and it does cost about £600. I am extremely short sighted and if the technology had been available when I was younger it would have honestly been life changing. I was a little sceptical but they have been spectacularly successful for my boy. They are most successful in young people who have prescriptions of -2 or less. Might be worth looking into.

AlmostThereLazy · 31/05/2025 23:14

Doesn’t she have friends who wear glasses? It’s not unusual.

HungreeHipp0 · 31/05/2025 23:27

It's a big change to need to wear something on your face all the time. It can completely change your look. Is that why she's a bit anxious about it?

I don't wear glasses, but my DD has had them since she was a baby. At least your DD is old enough that you won't have to clean mashed potato off her lenses 😂
