Tips for minimizing hangover?

I know the obvious answer is not to drink as much, which is my plan. However, it is my daughter's 18th, and there are about 20 of us all going out to Newcastle. They (including me) are all big drinkers, so realistically, that is not going to happen.

My hangovers usually last 3 days, and I start a new job on Monday. So far, I have drink hydration sachets before drinking and when I get home before bed, eating something carb-heavy before going out, and drinking water throughout the night.

Is there anything else I can do today/tomorrow that might help me feel human on Monday?

A glass of water in between each alcoholic drink. This will stop your body getting overwhelmed with alcohol and will help your body flush it out quicker whilst also keeping you hydrated.

Why is drinking less not an option if you have a big responsibility on Monday.

It is an option, as I said, that is what I plan, however, I also know that once I am out, and tipsy, and people are buying me shots, I am less likely to remember I am trying to drink less.

My plan is to switch between alcohol and sparkling water.

Glass of water between each drink, not only slows you down but helps flush you. Stick to one drink instead of mixing, and zero shots. Carb heavy food before bed and take 2 Paracetamol. Drink plenty of water before bed and during the night. Take Paracetamol upon waking and have lucozade ready, these help rehydrate you and give you energy, drink lucozade and water throughout the day.

Make sure you eat plenty, I tend to find eating something before bed too really helps prevent hangovers.

I appreciate this is not quite in the spirit of your post, OP, but if you can't quite trust yourself to stick to your plan to drink less, maybe just don't drink at all? After all, do you really want to be hungover on the first two days of a new job? Depends which is more important to you, the drinking or the first day (and first impressions...) at a new job. You can still have an enjoyable time without alcohol on this one occasion. Or even just say you're going to have 3 – for example – drinks throughout the night and stick to it.

A pint of water with a dioralyte sachet in it before bed and again in the morning as well as all the advice above

Jennifershuffles · 31/05/2025 12:50

Milk thistle tablets are supposed to help. Start taking them a week before - that's the advice I've been given. Don't know how well it works but could be worth a go.

Chocolatecustardcreamsrule · 31/05/2025 12:51

Make sure you have a big meal at the end of the night and stay up for at least half an hour when you get home and chuck as much water as you possibly can. Have a jug of water next to your bed and when you wake up with dry mouth chug as much as you possibly can again. When you wake up have a big breakfast and 2 paracetamol.

ThisPithyJoker · 31/05/2025 13:06

I've never tried them but I remember reading about Myrkil tablets when they came out a couple of years ago. You take them ahead of drinking and they're supposed to burn off the alcohol quicker before it hits the liver (or something). I assume this means you don't get as drunk, though, so if that would make you drink more, maybe not too helpful. Did a quick Google and the reviews are pretty mixed. Seem to work for some people but they're not cheap (about £1 a tablet).

Docwillseeyounow · 31/05/2025 13:17

Two nurofen before bed and a slice of bread/ toast. Full fat can of coke in the morning and a McDonalds.

pinkdelight · 31/05/2025 13:18

I'd steer clear of the shots if you're not so pissed you'll lose all will power to decline them. Stick with the taller drinks that take longer and aren't as strong. Then you can 'keep up' without adding that (usually not the best quality) hard booze that goes down so fast that it's only point is to get you more hammered. So have a pint/wine/whatever and water inbetween and let the 18yos have the shots. The only thing you'll be missing out on is the cracking head the next morning.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 31/05/2025 14:46

Cheese sandwich, chips or something carby and fatty and at least 3 pints of water before bed.

isitme111 · 31/05/2025 14:48

Big glass of orange juice before bed

GuffyTheDustBuster · 31/05/2025 14:52

My top tip is a regular snarky alarm message on my phone (every 30 mins or so) reminding me a) that I'm probably pissed and b) to drink water now.

And late at night I have a few that tell me I ought to go to bed now..
Sober me has saved drunk me a few times with that...

AlwaysFreezing · 31/05/2025 14:54

Pink migraleive the next day. Sorts you right out. I promise.

LlynTegid · 31/05/2025 15:00

I would hope your DD would be understanding if you decided not to drink alcohol at all that evening. Which would be reasonable.

NeelyOHara · 31/05/2025 15:06

She wants to drink? And that’s ok!

A water reminder has now been added to my phone. And yes, I want to drink. I don't want to be falling over drunk, but I want to be merry.

Cucumber is pretty good at giving you some of the good shit, I use it to ward off a nanna nap in the afternoon. But ultimately you need to rein in the alcohol OP.

BridgetRandomfuck · 31/05/2025 16:02

I’m not sure if they’re the same as the Myrkil tablets mentioned above, but Raisin Tree (hovenia dulcis) tablets are also meant to expel the alcohol ,ore quickly from your system - you take one at the beginning of the evening and then one before you go to bed. It might be psychological, but I have felt better the next day when I have taken them.

Hunstanton · 31/05/2025 16:04

Paracetamol before bed. This will aid a decent sleep. May well need it in the morning too, but definitely before you go to sleep.

Hohoholymoley · 31/05/2025 16:05

Have a non drowsy antihistamine the next day.

Wilma55 · 31/05/2025 16:09

Drink white spirits/ wine eg vodka not dark such as whisky, red wine.

reluctantbrit · 31/05/2025 16:15

Drink mocktails first, there are quite a decent selection nowadays which doesn't mean only fruit juice mixes.

Stick with one poison, don't mix. No shots ideally.

Water inbetween

Water before bed and 2 paracetemol.
