Need a handhold - son in hospital

Took him to A&E yesterday as he fell at the gym and we thought he had broken his wrist (thankfully just a sprain) however during their examinations they were worried about his circulation as his hands and lower arms were going blue and were cold to the touch, they advised we needed to make an appointment with his GP for further investigation.

Managed to get a GP appointment for 3pm today as the hospital suspect he could possibly have Raynaud's syndrome/disease

GP took his blood pressure and it was 177/127 , they thought the machine was faulty so got a another one and it was the same.

We had to take him straight to A&E, they’ve been trying to get bloods for the last 6 hrs but his veins keep collapsing and are unable to obtain his bloods, 2 doctors and 3 nurses have all tried with all sorts of needle sizes/cannulas etc… even with a vein scan machine, he’s been poked and prodded more times than we an count,

They’ve done a serious of tests, ECG, blood pressure cuffs on his arms and lower legs every 60 mins.

His only symptoms are some slight dizziness and some blurred vision, because of this they carried out a test where they turned the lights off and shown a torch in his eye… however the drs body language changed, she went and got her senior doctor to look and they redone the test.

We were then told to wait in the room as they needed to speak to a more senior doctor.

We were then put into a room, nurse came in about 45 mins later and advised he was being admitted, we asked why and she said has no one told you anything and we said no.

Doctor has come in and said DS is being transferred to another hospital, either tonight or tomorrow morning, he needs to see an specialist eye doctor , he also needs a urgent CT scan, possibly MRI and a heart scan as his ECG has shown some concerns and did we know he had a heart murmur.

They also need to get his bloods urgently somehow.

I’m not naive, I know what they are suspecting, I just need to be positive and hopefully the scans show nothing.

Just wishing you all the best. How worrying for you all. Keep a clear head. Keep giving clear information. Ask questions or for clarification when you need it. If you feel you mis said something earlier, let them know so they are not working off wrong information. Take care of yourself. xxx

Extraavailable, I don’t know what you are other than unbearably opinionated and SO irritating. Not to mention always wanting the last word. You have brought nothing but upset to this thread and I think you should take a good look at yourself. The people who have picked you up on your unhelpful comments can’t all be wrong!

Oh for god's sake. One of the first things that happens when you go to hospital is they ask for a list of all the prescribed medicine you are taking. I don't know why you are being so willfully argumentative on a thread where op is worried about her son. It's quite grim behaviour

I haven’t even got the head space to even deal.

I’m sure I said recreational drugs, not prescription drugs, I don’t believe I’ve denied saying ds takes or has taken prescription steroids.

Everyone is aware of his medical background, none of his existing conditions are the cause of why he’s currently in hospital, for info ds has acute asthma, eczema and anaphylactic allergies, I don’t even know why I’m explaining , look me up, I’ve had the same username for years , been quite open about ds background.

Anyone remotely intelligent knew exactly what you meant Flowers

Tangerinenets · 31/05/2025 19:59

Oh god what a worry for you all. I really hope they get to the bottom of it soon and you can go home xx

I totally agree! I am beginning to think there is something seriously wrong with Extraavailable! That would account for the bizarre things she is coming out with! Weirdly, she has ‘hearted’ my post criticising her. Not normal behaviour!

Ilikeadrink14 · 31/05/2025 20:07

And now she’s ‘hearted’ that one! I give up! The woman is crazy!

Hermyknee · 31/05/2025 20:09

If the MRI comes back with encephalitis, with his inflammatory conditions, I would ask for a lumbar puncture and test for specific antibodies in the spinal fluid (that also goes around the brain). With autoimmune encephalitis you can have it for a while. Antibodies like anti-NMDA and anti-GAD.

Sometimes people treat encephalitis as though it’s viral but there’s autoimmune as well.

You’re always going to get cranks online. I always wonder if they appear normal in real life and just go on the internet to be sinister anonymously.

Considering his build at 15 she probably meant he's not taking anabolic steroids.

PoopingAllTheWay · 31/05/2025 20:20

Hope you get some positive news soon

Tahlbias · 31/05/2025 20:37

I do hope your son will be ok! Sending hugs OP xx

BunnyEaster · 31/05/2025 20:45

Hopefully you have had the scans and blood results now. To give another prospective I've been blue lighted into hospital with a score one below the highest risk of death ( I got my notes after). Couldn't find any concrete proof of why I was so ill.

ChickpeaCauliflowerSalad · 31/05/2025 20:46

@HaudYerWheeshtYaWeeBellend

i usually love hearing your updates/news about your family! (Also been here since Justine was in knee socks, but name change a little now).

so sorry to hear about DS ❤️‍🩹. He's in a brilliant hospital now & hopefully they'll work it out very soon & get him on a treatment plan!!

I hope he's able to go back to playing rugby as I know how important it is to him xx but his health, long term, is the most important thing, even if he can't see that at the moment & is just focussing on the rugby!

School & Exam board will sort it all out & even if he has failed his maths exam he previously sat it's not the end of the world. His apprenticeship is likely to be ok with resists later on & it all has a way of working out ok.

sending much love to you, from one of the MN Aunties 😘

SonK · 31/05/2025 20:46

Hi OP, I hope our son will be okay and you will receive positive news soon : )

I remember when my newborn was in hospital for two weeks due to an infection they couldn't find despite numerous lumbar tests amongst others.

However my baby was in the best place and they didn't discharge us until they were 100% certain there was no sign of infection anymore.

HaudYerWheeshtYaWeeBellend · 31/05/2025 20:54

I’m sorry for all you going through similar situations, thank you for telling me your experiences, it really is helping, it’s a support network that I didn’t know I wanted or even needed, it’s honestly kept me from spiralling.

I really want to cuddle and send love to you all, we live in our tiny little bubbles, simply plodding along and something happens unexpectedly which literally makes you stop and reflect, it’s scary as hell mind.

Consultant has been, DS is booked into the eye infirmary tomorrow morning and getting a lumbar puncture sometime on Monday (more staff).

MRI/CT are on hold until the results of eye/lumbar results, as even if they show nothing he will still be getting a MRI as need to rule out renal issues.

Heart team will come to the ward on Monday to see him.

They said blood results on the main looked good, some elevations on some but nothing they didn’t expect. (Dh has noted it all down)

Currently they are ruling out all the nasties by following a treatment plan, starting with the above.

No exams, they’ve said with all that is going on they can’t put him under any stress, they are going to email me a letter and once I receive this, il forward it to his teachers/exam officer.

They’ve just gave me a bed which I am so thankful for, yesterday I slept on a pull out chair, was absolutely horrid.

DS is now settled for the night , happy as Larry now he has his laptop charger so he can watch movies.

No exams sounds like the right choice, the last thing he needs with high blood pressure is stress. Seems like they're really on the ball there and are investigating thoroughly so hopefully they will figure out what's wrong soon enough.
Hope you both manage to sleep well tonight.

Scentedjasmin · 31/05/2025 21:00

Oh bless you! Glad that you've got a bed. Such a stressful time for you all. Hoping for a positive result for your son. X

MomOfTwoGirls2 · 31/05/2025 21:02

Just wanted to wish your son all the best.

My advice as somebody who has been critically ill (and have since made a good recovery) most of it was advice given to me from medical friends.
Take one step at a time. Don’t try jump ahead to possible outcomes, deal with the here and now and with what you know as fact. Stay away from Dr Google.

And my own personal advice, stay positive. You are in the right place. Your son is a young strong guy, I am sure that will be very much in his favour.

I have similar aged children who also experienced some medical traumas. I really feel for you, and have my fingers tightly crossed for you and your lovely son.

ItWillBeDone · 31/05/2025 21:06

I don't have any advice but want to wish you all the best. I hope they get to the bottom of what's going on as soon as possible, and that they start the right treatment ASAP too.

BunnyEaster · 31/05/2025 21:10

Weird they didn't do the CT scan. That's the first thing I had. I then needed a NRI and lumber puncture. However the next Dr on duty cancelled it, the next one rebooted it etc for three days! On day four I was improving. So on day 5 I went home!

Taking notes is a good idea as you can ask and follow up everything the Drs are saying. I didn't feel too bad whilst in hospital ( I was very ill) but I felt weak and wiped out on day 6 when I was discharged back home.

AhBiscuits · 31/05/2025 21:16

Hopefully just an infection of some kind that they can get under control quickly.

JulietSierra · 31/05/2025 21:21

Op I have nothing to add other than best wishes and prayers. Every mother knows that feeling of absolute dread when there’s a suggestion of anything being wrong with their child. I know the RVI well and have had nothing but positive experiences there. Wishing you and your precious son all the very best and I’ll be watching for a positive update very soon.
Stay strong.

Madrid21 · 31/05/2025 21:28

I'm so sorry for what you and your son are going through, I hope he makes a quick recovery. I just wanted to say that I (quite a few years ago now!) was in a very similar situation regarding big exams, I had emergency major surgery shortly before my A levels started, at the time it felt awful but the best thing I did was to resign myself to the fact that it wasn't happening that year and concentrate on recovery. School were amazing and let me re-take the whole year and I probably ended up with better grades anyway, I don't regret the decision at all, health comes first.
