Just opened my banana pack and found this. Do I need to burn the gaff down?

A quick google of ‘spider eggs on banana’ shows very similar images OP so I would get it out of the house asap.

Sux2buthen · 29/05/2025 10:13

Yes, yes as I suspected.

I'm now never buying bananas ever again because I'll forever be having arachnophobia flashbacks 🤣 you realise you're going to have to go all over your shopping incase they've transferred to something else 😬

Devilsmommy · 29/05/2025 10:16

Your username is very apt btw😂

its2025 · 29/05/2025 10:17

It's a spider egg sack. I used to work in a grocers years ago and it was quite common to find exotic spiders in with the bananas (luckily usually dead ones)

Sux2buthen · 29/05/2025 10:18

I’ve just bleached the bananas and had a mild heart attack😂showed my daughters, I don’t think we will be getting bananas for a while lol

Yes, definitely some sort of spider eggs.

FictionalCharacter · 29/05/2025 10:35

Brush it off with a bit of kitchen roll if you're bothered. It won't have affected the bananas at all.

Tortielady · 29/05/2025 10:41

According to Google, freezing the item the sac is on kills the eggs. You'd need to wrap the whole thing up in a sealable plastic bag before putting it in the freezer. It would also be an excellent idea to wash the rest of your shopping, in the kitchen sink so as to dispose of any stray eggs that might have separated from the sac. We've had an extended spell of high pressure - loads of warm sunny weather - so it's not impossible that a couple of little spiderlings could survive. Spiders in themselves are great. They chomp their way through tons of insects every year and usually mind their own business. However, you don't know what species you've got here, so it's wise to be cautious.

Sux2buthen · 29/05/2025 10:46

I’m not mega worried about the other shopping purely because I’ve had those bananas for several days before seeing this and I only found that when I pulled them apart, the webbing was kind of glueing two bananas together in the middle of the bunch.
also most of the other stuff I ordered has already gone so I’m optimistic that it’s contained. Yuck 🤢

I've aged even reading this. Bananas no thanks for a while.

MyKingdomForACat · 29/05/2025 11:04

I’d have died on the spot 😱

MyKingdomForACat · 29/05/2025 11:05

Actually, I’m just going to check our bananas…

Sux2buthen · 29/05/2025 11:09

These replies have really made me laugh, I’m glad I’m not the only one that found this shocking 😂

We’ve had a few stowaways in our store. Apparently they blast the bananas with high pressure hoses before packing them to get rid of any unwanted eight legged friends but some of the tougher ones still make it. Luckily they’ve all been very small though but still not nice to find them!

spiderlight · 29/05/2025 11:29

Your only real option here is to burn down the entire house, if you ask me.

@its2025 ‘usually’ dead ones?!

when I was at uni I briefly worked in a warehouse that imported bananas.

they come in huge long ‘trees’ wrapped up in brown paper

step 1 was to get a long, hooked knives and slice the paper off whilst stepping smartly backwards. Step 2 was to collect up the variety of spiders etc which then rained to the floor. Step 3 was to call Twycross Zoo and they’d come and collect everything interesting!

there were a LOT of tarantulas

itsgettingweird · 29/05/2025 11:35

I lived abroad opposite a banana plantation for years.

Believe me you DO NOT want one of loss of those fuckers moving in.

wash the banana under boiling water, bag and outside bin preferably someone who lives in another town!

Icedcaramelfrappe · 29/05/2025 11:54

Nope not for me

Sux2buthen · 29/05/2025 12:16

I’m glad I posted now, I thought I might be overreacting but it seems I was not!! 🍌

Did they pick through the species and only choose the most interesting ones? What happened to the others? Free exotic pets for all staff? 😅

Am tucking into a late breakfast of banana and peanut butter porridge. I do like spiders though.
