If a friend purchases tickets for an event later in the year, how long do you take to pay your share?

I always pay within a week, I feel that's an acceptable time.

My two friends though, are very lax about this. Last year I booked tickets for the 3 of us in July, for a show in November. Although we all saw each other several times in this period, they waited until November and paid me at the theatre!

We're all seeing a show in 2 weeks time, that I booked at Christmas. One of them (who lives in my village!) has mentioned a few times she'd put the money through my door but hasn't. The other one lives a bit further away, but nothing to stop her doing a bank transfer!

It's not just me who books things, they sometimes book group tickets too but their timelines for payment are very different to mine!

The tickets aren't mega expensive, they tend to be about £30 each, but I'd rather be reimbursed soon afterwards. Months later is taking advantage, I feel.

I’d transfer as soon as tickets are booked to be honest!

Sortalike · 29/05/2025 09:21

If someone was buying tickets for me I'd pay them as soon as we'd agreed to go.

If I was buying tickets for others, I'd expect the money before the credit card bill was due.

As soon as booked - that’s when friend has to pay. It’s so rude not to.

As soon as we agreed to go. I’d give her the money before she booked unless she said she didn’t need it in order to make the booking.

bluesriff · 29/05/2025 09:23

I always pay my friends immediately because I think it's shitty to make people wait. Frankly, if someone waited that long to reimburse me I would never be paying for anything upfront again. If they are THAT keen to go then they can pay upfront cant they?

Bluevelvetsofa · 29/05/2025 09:25

Surely you pay immediately it’s booked.

Pedallleur · 29/05/2025 09:26

When I am asked. Might be waiting for the cc bill so then I pay either cash or Bacs. If people have form for not paying just don't get tickets. Let them get their own or get them for you (they won't!)

ViciousCurrentBun · 29/05/2025 09:27

I would want money up front. These days it’s so easy to transfer money there is no excuse. I just can’t be bothered with flaky people at all. I’m extremely careful who I become good friends with. That is the level where you go to each others homes and have some sort of financial mixing like going out for food and do stuff like go to the theatre.

2ndbestslayer · 29/05/2025 09:28

I pay immediately. The minute someone messages to say it's booked I transfer the money. No way would I expect someone to be out of pocket for any longer than necessary

SomewhereInMyHeart · 29/05/2025 09:28

As soon as booked. Otherwise it feels like they are not fully committed to going and might tell you later they can’t make it. I recently chased a friend (politely) after a week. Also bank transfer better than cash so you both have a record of it.

Foreverhappiest · 29/05/2025 09:29

My friend booked non refundable tickets on the Friday and confirmed the price Friday evening. I transferred the money in the Saturday morning. No need not to.

Coffeeishot · 29/05/2025 09:29

I usually transfer money after they are booked no later than the next day, then noone is out of pocket. I think you need to be more assertive with your friends, say something like the tickets are x can you transfer me the money.

cariadlet · 29/05/2025 09:29

I usually pay when something is booked.

If I pay for something, friends either pay straight away or if it's close to payday, they may ask when I need the money and I'll let them know when my credit card bill is due so that they can pay before then.

TokyoSushi · 29/05/2025 09:30

I'm also an immediate payer.

I've just had this experience, paid for something in January, many promises of payment but none received and now the person has cancelled for an event this weekend. It's actually really changed my opinion of them.

All this 'I'll pay when I get home' 'I'll pay when I'm in the office' really annoys me, with modern banking the likelihood is that you could pay me from your phone this very minute if you wanted to. Can you tell I'm irritated?!

Coffeeishot · 29/05/2025 09:31

Balance transfer is so easy I don't understand people delaying, unless its a conversation about being a bit skint can they pay next week!

Arquebuse · 29/05/2025 09:31

If it bothers you, ask them to transfer the money before you book?

Bloodtuch · 29/05/2025 09:33

I pay as soon as I'm told what I owe. Literally as soon as I see the message, I'll send the tf. Otherwise I'm likely to forget, and I'd hate it if someone had to remind me.

When I'm booking things, I have a group of friends who operate on the same basis as me so I'm happy to pay in advance, but for most people I'd say "it's £30, send me the money and I'll book when I've got it all in".

Viviennemary · 29/05/2025 09:33

I would say within a few days. Longer than a week then I would ring and apologise and pay.

Picklechicken · 29/05/2025 09:37

As soon as booked! Anything other than that (unless there’s a very good reason) is cheeky fucker territory. Your friend has paid and is out of pocket the minute they’ve booked the tickets.

lucysmam · 29/05/2025 09:39

Usually as things are being booked, or before so the money's there & waiting. Very occasionally wait for payday if agreed beforehand.

Chewbecca · 29/05/2025 09:39

If I am the booker, I always specify when my credit card payment date is, so I might say "all booked, my credit card has to be paid by 20th June so can you trf by then please". I would chase if not paid by then too.

(If I am the recipient, I pay right away).

Oddly Tesco and others don't let you use that as an excuse and neither do I. You can either afford it or not.

mrssunshinexxx · 29/05/2025 09:42

Immediately. Stop booking
