How often do you wash your water bottle?

Curious to know how often you all wash your reusable water bottles. I’ve heard everything from "after every use" to "never, it only has water in it." I usually just rinse mine with water daily and give it a deep clean maybe once a week with straw and bottle brushes taking apart all the parts and silicone pieces (it’s an Owala), but now I’m wondering if that’s gross or totally normal.

Ours are Sistema Twist and Sip Wave bottles that are supposedly dishwasher safe ( top rack only ).
We put them in the dishwasher after a day of use.
Despite being careful and only putting them on the top rack we have about 6 or 7 bottles with no lids as the lids no longer work. Something happens to them and they just don’t twist up anymore.
Sistema don’t sell spare lids. 😡☹️
And I’m damned if I’m buying more bottles from Sistema just for more lids.
We just mix and match the bottles and the lids now.

Daily

My husband thought our daughter’s bottle she has in her room didn’t need cleaning as it was ‘only water’. He does her bedtime. I was horrified when I realised and it was all gunky
around the straw bit. He had no idea! Now he washes it every time he refills it.

Ive had parents ask why I insist on bottles going home each evening. Errmmm to keep them clean!

TheChosenTwo · 28/05/2025 20:55

Once every few days. Just has a flip cap
opening as I really dislike drinking from those reusable straws because I can smell the sweaty plastic! I only drink water in them but there’s no excess plastic parts with a mouthpiece etc, just an opening. It gets rinsed out every day and then when I remember (usually every other day) it goes in the dishwasher.

Wash it daily. Don't have a dishwasher so soak it once a week in Milton sterilising solution.

crackofdoom · 28/05/2025 21:02

After every use, but I only buy the simple screw top kind. The ones with straws look incredibly difficult to keep properly keen.

LeedsZebra90 · 28/05/2025 21:05

I usually do mine in the sink in the morning, the kids get washed in the dishwasher every day after school. Would never have bottles with straws as I find them impossible to keep clean even with regular washing - the simpler the better for me.

RedSetter78 · 28/05/2025 21:07

Every day - any less is absolutely vile in my opinion, especially with something like an Owala that can so easily grow mould, algae etc in the crevices & straw. DD has one and they are somewhat of a nightmare to properly clean.

I remember chatting to a school mum who allowed her DC to keep their water bottle at school all year, never once brought it home for a wash because ‘it’s only water’ 🤢

Well, I am embarrassed with these replies. I am trying to increase how often I clean my bottle, and it's maybe fortnightly now, which is a vast improvement.

DepositSaverUpper · 28/05/2025 21:12

Daily. My work one and the dcs school ones. Hot soapy water.

CatteryCatz · 28/05/2025 21:15

Everyday. It goes in the dishwasher

PickAChew · 28/05/2025 21:26

Every time I use it. Backwash, anyone?

I also don't use one with a silly spout or straw because they're impossible to keep clean.

Fuelledbylatte · 28/05/2025 22:48

Everyday then once a week they all get a bath in Milton

Empress13 · 29/05/2025 05:44

Wash it daily and once a week in the dishwasher

Wallywobbles · 29/05/2025 06:23

Not often enough. Despite having given myself appalling food poisoning once with a water bottle.

eurochick · 29/05/2025 07:40

Daily. I stick them in the dishwasher. Eventually the coating might come off but I’d rather that than have them dirty.

Everygrain · 29/05/2025 07:49

After use, I bought a silicone bottle brush to wash it with. It's the screw top kind.

faerietales · 29/05/2025 07:52

Everyday. I’m really surprised that people go days or weeks without washing them 🤢

Bobbybobbins · 29/05/2025 08:06

Every day but I don’t use a brush, just fill it with warm soapy water and shake it about

Ladyymuck · 29/05/2025 14:53

I wash mine every day and have recently bought a Stanley as they can go in the dishwasher.

KneesAreSore · 29/05/2025 14:58

Dishwasher every day
