How often do you wash your water bottle?

Curious to know how often you all wash your reusable water bottles. I’ve heard everything from "after every use" to "never, it only has water in it." I usually just rinse mine with water daily and give it a deep clean maybe once a week with straw and bottle brushes taking apart all the parts and silicone pieces (it’s an Owala), but now I’m wondering if that’s gross or totally normal.

Daily.
Otherwise bacteria could be building up in it 🤮

TheCurious0range · 28/05/2025 08:56

Mine is just a sho one with a screw off lid to drink from, I wash it daily with hot water and washing up liquid, give it a good shake and use the washing up sponge around the top, probably use the brush a couple of times a week to get to the bottom, but it has no small parts it's just metal with an open neck and screw on lid

FeralWoman · 28/05/2025 08:57

Daily for the lid/spout and at least every second day for the bottle itself. Fresh water in it each day. I deliberately bought one that could be easily washed with no disassembling or special brushes need.

Picklechicken · 28/05/2025 08:57

My son has one for school and I wash it in the dishwasher at the end of every day. I clean the spout bit separately in the sink as I don’t think the dishwasher gets that bit very clean.

Gross. I wash mine every day and have a few bottles on rotation.

Your mouth and tap water both probably have bacteria that will multiply on the mouthpiece and in the bottle.

I didn’t realise quite how much I did wash water bottles until my kids mate left his drink at ours. I refilled it for him and it was utterly full of mould.

QueenOfWeeds · 28/05/2025 09:01

Rinse out daily on average (when I forget to bring it home), wash properly every other day. As an aside, I really want an Owala. Is it good?

feelingbleh · 28/05/2025 09:03

Every day now as I use to be one of there's only water in it people until I see black mould in the spout and straw that I'd been drinking from

ItsBouqeeeet · 28/05/2025 09:03

A swill with warm water every day.

IwantmyReptv · 28/05/2025 09:06

Every couple of days. I have a few clear ones on rotation and they only have water in them.

rulerofthepencils · 28/05/2025 09:12

Dishwasher every day but they don't have straws, just a flip lid.

toastofthetown · 28/05/2025 09:12

My bottle is hand washed preferred so can’t just sling it in the dishwasher, and because I’m breastfeeding a newborn at the moment I’m pretty much always drinking from it, so have go into a habit of just topping it up. Based on this I’ll scale up the washing. I haven’t found any mould on it, and I do take out both of the silicone seals when I wash it.

Daily

dudsville · 28/05/2025 09:14

We run the dishwasher every night. These kinds of things go in that wash, ready for the morning.

Jellycatspyjamas · 28/05/2025 09:16

I purposely bought the kids ones that can go in the dishwasher so they get cleaned every night. I have a stainless steel that gets washed at the end of each day. They get grimy and mouldy pretty quickly otherwise.

AlteredStater · 28/05/2025 09:17

I use the bottles the water comes in - I buy small Evian or other still water brands and once I've finished the bottle I then use tap water for around a week to fill it again before discarding it. It gets rinsed out daily a couple of times as tap water taste changes after a few hours and I really dislike that.

I love my Owala! I was looking for the perfect water bottle for months and until I found the Owala, nothing seemed to fit everything I wanted. The straw piece is comfortable to drink from, the chug bit means that the air flow to the straw is huge so you don’t need to suck really hard, easy to fill with ice, decent insulation, I find the handle nice for carrying it around with two fingers great for me but my husband who has bigger hands doesn’t. Cleaning is fine; one the silicone seals (the ring on the inside of the lid) is faffy to remove, the rest comes apart easily and technically it is dishwasher safe but I’m too precious to risk it!

After every use

Lindajonesjustcantlivemylife · 28/05/2025 10:20

Every couple of days, warm water and a denture tablet to clean it.

Alwayswonderedwhy · 28/05/2025 10:34

Every day.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 28/05/2025 10:36

Fairly often, especially after hearing of someone whose recurrent throat infections were put down (by her GP) to the fact that she hardly ever washed her water bottle, so was endlessly re-infecting herself.

tinyspiny · 28/05/2025 10:38

Daily - I wouldn’t reuse a glass / mug the next day so why would I reuse bottle .

Icedcaramelfrappe · 28/05/2025 10:42

Mine gets a deep soak once a week

DancingDucks · 28/05/2025 10:44

Every day.

Bloop1986 · 28/05/2025 11:27

Everyday with warm sudsy water using a long handled brush! And then one a week i soak all our bottles in the sink with a sterilising tablet or a bit of milton
