How to use wafer thin chicken slices in a meal for kids

SalmonDreams · 27/05/2025 22:57

Another meat question from your local ignorant vegetarian:
We have bought these chicken slices (very thin like deli or ham slices) thinking the kids might like to eat them on bread but well they don't. What else could I do with them? Will they taste nice just cut into pieces and added to pasta? Any other ideas? I have to use a lot of them by end of this month.

Also, the kids are very fussy and can't have any nuts or dairy. ...

Thanks for any suggestions.

Do they like wraps? You could put them in wraps with a sauce you know they like - satay ot mayo or sweet chilli or ketchup, with some shredded iceberg and any other veg you know they'll like. Roll the wraps tightly and they may not even notice the chicken.
That wager thin stuff's not very nice BTW. Very watery and tasteless. Far better to get a roast chicken and cut slices fresh from it.

RedSetter78 · 27/05/2025 23:01

To be perfectly honest I’d give them to a dog 😬 As a veggie with meat eating DC it’s good quality meat or nothing in this house..!

PennywisePoundFoolish · 27/05/2025 23:20

Agree not the nicest chicken. The wrap suggestion is a good one, the no dairy has me a bit stumped because cheese would make an easy fix, but I've never tried dairy-free cheese substitutes to know if they'd work (I was thinking adding to a pizza, toasted chicken and cheese sandwiches, mocking up a lunchables style thing with crackers, cheese and dips)

omelette?

Hm they aren't keen on wraps but it could be an option. Chicken and lettuce sounds like a great combination to me. The lactose intolerant one can tolerate parmesan in small quantities so I could add that. Would it go well with chicken?

In an omelette do you just add them to the egg before making thr omelette?

I didn't know the chicken slices taste horrible. 😟 I like the quorn chicken style slices on bread and thought these might be similar (though many people don't like quorn either).

Can I still freeze individual slices or will they just taste too horrible after defrosting?

Thanks everyone.

Soft cheese mixed in with some pasta and any veggies you have

Cheffymcchef · 27/05/2025 23:36

They’re disgusting and made with cheap factory reared chicken that’s reformed. Even my dog won’t eat them.
toss them.

Chop it up small and put in risotto.

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 27/05/2025 23:47

Don't waste your time freezing them.
Maybe next door's cat would eat it ?

BobbyBiscuits · 27/05/2025 23:51

You can fry garlic and a bit of onion, then add the chicken ham cut up and then add it to pasta with an egg and parmesan to make a kind of carbonara?

Or use lots of chopped veggies and boiled potatoes and the ham and make a big tortilla style omelette?

Same kind of thing but spring onions, peppers, peas plus the ham and scrambled egg into cooked rice with soy sauce or sriracha to make 'special fried rice'?

Lostuser · 27/05/2025 23:55

I’d probably bin them to be honest

AdaColeman · 28/05/2025 00:11

Chop up small and add to a tomato and vegetable (eg mushroom) sauce for pasta.
Chop up and add to the filling for a pie, mushrooms, peas, onions, diced potatoes and carrots, and gravy for example.
Chop up and add to a vegetable or mixed bean casserole.
Chop up and add to a mixed vegetable curry.

CurlewKate · 28/05/2025 05:46

My emergency 5 minute dinner. Literally-5 minutes. Microwave some rice. Add tinned sweetcorn, microwaved frozen peas and carrots, chopped up ham, or leftover protein of any sort, or your chicken. Maybe a blob of pesto. Stir. Serve. Conceal your annoyance when your vile children prefer it to meals you have slaved over. Pour wine.

DilemmaDelilah · 28/05/2025 18:22

I think it's very likely that the children just don't like the wafer thin chicken slices. I don't. If that's the case then there's no point in putting them in anything else. Why don't you ask the children to try a little bit of the meat on its own? Then at least you should know.

RebeccaRedhat · 28/05/2025 18:29

Home made pizza

Poiuytrewqa · 28/05/2025 18:39

Would they have them with bread if you added coleslaw?

SliceoCakeAuntSally1 · 28/05/2025 18:41

1.Cut into ribbons. Mix into pasta, sweetcorn, mayonnaise, season to taste. If your kids like a tad spice, add a small squirt of sriracha and mix in.
2.chop chicken up finely, (maybe use your blender chopping attachment). Boil up and mash some potatoes and mix in the chopped chicken. Season to taste. Let it all cool in the fridge then roll into small balls and coat in breadcrumbs. Either toast in the oven or air fry till golden then let them cool. Make up small pots of dipping sauce for them to dip them in.

GoldLash · 28/05/2025 18:42

Just bin them

ScarletBeret · 28/05/2025 20:44

If I could afford to, I’d feed them to my cats. If I couldn’t afford to waste them, I’d shred them and put them in a stir fry, making sure they are crispy, and served in a wrap with salad and some tasty sauce.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 28/05/2025 20:49

Wrapped around melon slices as you would with prosciutto?

You need a Labrador.

EnjoythemoneyJane · 28/05/2025 21:34

Sorry OP, but yeah, that’s really horrible mechanically-reclaimed processed meat - literally the worst you can buy in terms of taste and nutrition, and full of nasty additives.

Is the idea is to give your children more animal protein? In which case can you bear to buy and cook a couple of decent quality chicken breasts? You could roast or poach them and slice them yourself? They’ll actually taste of chicken, which your kids might like!

I can totally understand if you don’t want to deal with raw meat (gives me the gip and we’re all dedicated carnivores here!), but getting ersatz alternatives is not a good substitute. You’re better off saving your money and sticking with veggies and eggs.

I think, I'll try this, including the wine!! Dd yesterday made very appreciative noises during dinner and when I asked her what in particular she was enjoying she said that the cucumber slices were extremely tasty. Literally just sliced cucumber. Not even salad...

I do sometimes make bolognese or use diced chicken breast pieces but I find it super stressful as I worry about not cooking it properly. They sometimes like the ready made roast chicken pieces but dh bought by accident the slices. I could just throw them but I hate to waste food. I won't buy them again (unless one of the recipes here is a hit..)

pollymere · 28/05/2025 23:19

Do check they don't have any dairy added...

They aren't very tasty but you could use them in tomato based pasta. Or make pastry pinwheels with pesto and a tiny bit of parmesan and use it instead of ham in them (you spread it onto a sheet of puff then lay the ingredients out. You might want vegan cream cheese too. Roll both sides into the middle then cut slices and bake).
