How to use wafer thin chicken slices in a meal for kids

SalmonDreams · 27/05/2025 22:57

Another meat question from your local ignorant vegetarian:
We have bought these chicken slices (very thin like deli or ham slices) thinking the kids might like to eat them on bread but well they don't. What else could I do with them? Will they taste nice just cut into pieces and added to pasta? Any other ideas? I have to use a lot of them by end of this month.

Also, the kids are very fussy and can't have any nuts or dairy. ...

Thanks for any suggestions.

fry mushrooms and add finely shredded chicken until it looks a little bit browned, then add that to an omelette with cheese?
I do that with ham and it’s nice…

Honestly, the number of people advocating throwing food away on this post is gross. Check your privilege!

Get a grip. It’s a few packets of overly processed chicken that a) I wouldn’t expect a human being to eat, even my dog won’t touch
it and b) nobody in her house even likes. No point in slaving away and purposefully hiding them in dinners that ultimately the kids will probably refuse, contributing to (shock horror!) more food waste.

For future reference, ready roasted chicken is usually very expensive. Buying a whole chicken and roasting it at home is much cheaper and much tastier. Just follow the instructions on the packaging, usually about 1.5hours in the oven. A drizzle of oil and some S&p helps, as does an occasional baste with the juices that come out - just tip the pan and spoon them over the chicken a couple of times.

lovehearts88 · 29/05/2025 11:55

You could chop up small and put it something like chicken fried rice or an omlette?

You need a Labrador.

I had a black Labrador, he was called max but died at 4. Maybe the disgust over the chicken ham finished him off? Or do you need the yellow kind of lab lol

gallows humour I apologise. I have a greedy Staffie now.

Idontjetwashthefucker · 29/05/2025 15:14

Where are people getting chicken ham from, it says chicken in the OP.

I actually like wafer thin chicken, I use it as a wrap and put boiled eggs and salad inside, then dunk in salad cream/ mayo/ sweet chilli...nice little low cal snack

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 29/05/2025 15:19

@Cheffymcchef

4 was very young.

I have had a yellow, a black and as suggested earlier a beagle too. Not all at once.
Tho I always have more than 1 dog, they have got smaller as I get older :)

Never had a staffie, and won't now as current pack is smaller than a staffie.

Yep he got cancer. We got him when he was 2 from a rescue place so we didn’t have long. I love beagles!

I also have a Lhasa apso but not sure if that counts as a proper dog

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 29/05/2025 15:26

@Cheffymcchef Oh wow - I had a shih tzu of course they count as proper dogs :)

@SalmonDreams sorry I have hijacked your thread

He was a 3/4 Lab 1/4 poodle (someone’s accident). Made it to 15 and ate anything. Anything at all.

No problem. Hijack away. 😃

I made chicken slices sandwiches for the kids' lunch boxes today but I told them they can just throw the chicken slices if they don't like them and eat just the buttered bread.

In my defence, the pack says 'no water added'. Would that make them more edible? They are M & S ones. Has anyone tried them? I'd love to try them just to see if they are really as revolting as everyone claims. I love the quorn ones, which usually people hate. Surely the actual chicken slices can't be worse tasting (or unhealthier) than the quorn ones?

Oh also will they keep for about 3-4h outside rhe fridge? 😮

Given that your original post was on the 27th and today is the 30th, so the chicken slices are at least 3 days old, no I would keep them unrefrigerated. Most meat products say to use within 3 days of opening and to keep refrigerated.

They weren't opened. They were in the fridge and I just opened the pack today morning. The expiry date says 1st June..

I buy wafer thin sliced chicken breast from a deli counter (so proper meat rather than mushed up, reformed stuff). I use them like mini wraps and put coleslaw or cottage cheese in them

ScarletBeret · 28/05/2025 20:44

If I could afford to, I’d feed them to my cats. If I couldn’t afford to waste them, I’d shred them and put them in a stir fry, making sure they are crispy, and served in a wrap with salad and some tasty sauce.

Don’t give them to your cats, they’re loaded with salt.

M&S -
Ingredients
Cooked Chicken Breast (96%) · Salt · Stabiliser: E451 · Potato Starch · Curing Salt (Salt · Preservative: Sodium Nitrite) · Antioxidant: E301.

Bernard Matthews similar product - called chicken slices sold in Iceland

Bernard Matthews similar product - called chicken slices - sold in Spar

ASDA Just Essentials Chicken Roll

Chicken (64%), Water, Potato Starch, Salt, Acidity Regulator (Potassium Lactate), Emulsifier (Triphosphates), Gelling Agent (Carrageenan), Antioxidant (Sodium Ascorbate)

but I wouldn't cook / heat up any of them, sandwiches / wraps etc or in a salad is the way to go.

They’re disgusting and made with cheap factory reared chicken that’s reformed. Even my dog won’t eat them.
toss them.

It really depends where you’ve bought them , we buy any cooked meats in M&S and they are generally quite nice but obviously more expensive . My daughter ( coeliac disease) has a chicken and mayo sandwich with side salad and a few chips for dinner occasionally .

tinyspiny · 30/05/2025 11:34

DilemmaDelilah · 30/05/2025 12:17

@SalmonDreams I'm sorry, I had assumed that as you bought them thinking that the kids might like to eat them on bread, but they don't, that they had actually tried them and didn't like them on bread, rather than they hadn't tried them at all and just didn't fancy a sandwich.
