Could you watch an execution?

Soubriquet · 27/05/2025 21:26

Watching a film and there’s an execution and of course there’s people sitting behind the glass watching and it made me think, could I watch it?

I don’t think I could. Even if they murdered someone I loved very much, I’m not sure I could sit there and watch someone else die.

But then others say it can bring a sense of closure to them.

What about you?

What a mature response. Your opinions are very obviously worth considering.

Just as yours are worthless .

I don’t think so

If you can’t watch a lethal injection execution from another room behind a glass pane, then you won’t be able to watch a relative die by intravenous assisted suicide/euthanasia as, medically, the exact same drugs are used.

No, not without being traumatised. I saw the video (taken by a guard on their phone) of Sadam Hussain being taken to the gallows. It cut the moment before he was hung. Despite some of the terrible things he had done, I found it really disturbing and it still bothers me to think about it.

I forgot about that! I saw it too and I saw the whole thing. But it didn’t feel real to me. I think it’s cos I saw it through a screen rather than live

Again, some confusion here with retribution and justice.

There appears to be some confusion about whether I give a fuck about your retribution and justice ‘copy and paste’ answer. Clue: I don’t. The question was whether I could watch one. I answered that question.

Itiswhysofew · 28/05/2025 15:27

No, I couldn't. I'd hate to know and witness someone in such distress.

It's dreadful for people who've suffered at the hand of monsters, I realise thatFlowers

Quite quick to anger, aren’t you?

Verv · 28/05/2025 16:13

Yes, I could.
But I wouldn't particularly want to, unless they had done something to harm those I care about, in which case I wouldnt hesitate.

YouWillFindMeInTheGarden · 28/05/2025 16:20

Yes bravado! To whoever commented on my choice of words… 🤷‍♀️

Not particularly, only when speaking to people with a totalitarian attitude, with an inability to see other peoples points of view and who purposefully misinterpret responses to fit their rhetoric!

lljkk · 28/05/2025 16:36

If I needed to watch an execution (as in acting as vital witness) I could probably watch it. In that sense I am capable, in most contexts. Probably not if being-killed person was someone I loved, though, I don't think I could bear it.

I would typically not choose to ever watch.

My dad is staunchly anti-death penalty which he encountered often in his work (outside UK), while I am neutral about the DP. I would probably strongly protest against DP specifically for someone who killed my dad because it would be the last thing Dad wanted, would hugely compound the tragedy, almost like an enormous insult to him. I'd feel I owed it to Dad to protest "do not do this in his name"

They are? Where have you read that? Because generally it’s an iv barbiturate that’s used in ig assisted dying - not the case in American prisons where the lethal injection is used.

scalt · 28/05/2025 17:07

I would if it was the penalty for treasonous politicians. I’m surprised there isn’t still some ancient law which says that a prime minister who lies to the monarch must have his head chopped off (Boris Johnson being a case in point). I’d watch that.

It’s an acknowledgment of your point. No more, no less.

More the snarky emoji I was referring to. But no problem.

Well, I don’t know who you are referring to because I can completely see the other side of the debate and I used to be vocally pro DP. As for totalitarian, don’t make me laugh. You don’t seem to understand what it means if you are labeling my attitude as such.

Zippedydodah · 28/05/2025 18:26

No, I couldn’t but I would lock someone up and throw away the key of see them dumped on a deserted island as an alternative.
i met a retired hangman in the early 1970’s when I was a student nurse. He was an absolute gentleman and seemed to genuinely care about the condemned prisoners.

Could you just stop typing please?

It's an interesting discussion and your needless nitpicking is very tedious.

WigglywagglyWanda · 28/05/2025 21:37

I totally understand why some of you feel you could be there or even take part if it was someone who harmed one of your family.

When I think of Fred and Rose West though, he chose to hang himself, as did Harold Shipman. So while my own gut would want them dead, in some ways that's too easy, a quick and merciful death is more than they gave their victims.

So logically I would want a full life term, i actually think it's more of a punishment, if that makes sense.

But I'd no more make fun and nitpick at opposing views, it's such a sensitive subject and the pulling posts apart and nitpicking at them is bloody annoying. Very interesting thread

Or you could just ignore me. Nobody is compelling you to get involved.

Well honestly it's hard to ignore, you post so often and really just to poke, and totally derail the interesting discussion.

Noone is compelling me to get involved? It's a long thread for discussion, I'm as entitled to comment as the rest of you

But when I see your name pop up again I will be sure to scroll😎

I was about to answer you but I see you've deleted it.

Probably for the best 😅

Cattenberg · 28/05/2025 22:14

I don't know if I could watch, even if the condemned person had murdered a member of my family. . I would probably watch for a moment and then turn away. I usually do this when watching a film with a gruesome scene in it. Once you've seen something like that, you can't unsee it.

I've never watched an execution video, but the prompts in internet search results show that many people must search for video footage of violent deaths, including executions. I don't think we've changed much since the days when unruly crowds would turn out to watch a hanging.

Kibble19 · 28/05/2025 22:19

Do any of you remember the likes of LimeWire where you could see execution videos? Must’ve been the early 2000s. There seemed to be a spate of Western travellers being captured abroad. I’m sure there was a British guy, old boy, maybe called Kenneth?

I remember the videos well (even after 20+ years), the person in an orange jumpsuit in front of men with their faces covered.

ThatsNotMyTeen · 28/05/2025 22:23

absolutely not
