I have a delma. Right so I'm trying to make this area solid.as I'm going to have 3 or 4 wheelie bins there .

So far i have a sub base of mot1. Which looks like this see pic with lumpy stones. If I was to add grano dust it would look look like this see other pic.

To add the grano dust it will cost about 100 pound.

The thing is I'm feeling a bit tight with money 😅 so I'm trying to think If there's something else I can do that's cheaper

I think more information is needed!

SherlockHolmes · 26/05/2025 17:09

What's a delma?
What's Mot1?
What's grano dust?

ChompandaGrazia · 26/05/2025 17:15

I have no idea what you are asking here. Try the U.K. diy subreddit. They are really helpful and might understand what you are asking.

RedFatball · 26/05/2025 17:17

I'm assuming dilemma for delma and mot1 is shorthand for hardcore used to make foundations - ministry of transport type 1 in full. Not sure about grano though...

TonTonMacoute · 26/05/2025 17:17

I think a delma is a dilemma, as for the rest 🤷‍♀️

GingerPaste · 26/05/2025 17:20

I’d put paving slabs on the MOT1. You can usually get them for nothing - people are often giving them away locally (look on NextDoor if you live in England).

Game0fCrones · 26/05/2025 17:20

Translation needed I think!

If what you're after is a flat base, then how about that sand they use in block paving? That's cheap.

LoafofSellotape · 26/05/2025 17:21

I googled what a delma is and it's a snake so now I'm really confused!

AlwaysFreezing · 26/05/2025 17:22

Cement it?

I don't have any transport. For collection also I don't have a circular saw or simlar for cutting

Yes go with small/manageable cement slabs. Don’t go with pea gravel or such as weeds will blow in the tiny stones fling about as you wheel your carts in and out.

Possibly never done that before. I look into it .

I did think about that . But I think sand would move and make it hard to put wheelie bins in and out.

The OP has already asked for help with this problem and on that thread it was written with a little more clarity:

https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/_chat/5341037-small-project-front-garden-pic-help?reply=144533113

That's a bit different i was asking about planters how to make the area look better to cover from the front by adding plants/flowers etc .

This thread is asking what I can do about the ground area /surface that the bins will sit on .

I clicked to see what a delma is I'm so disappointed i thought it was going to be like a llama 😕

Beautiful. Not quite a haiku, but moving nonetheless.

HappiestSleeping · 26/05/2025 17:38

@Youagain2025 won't wheelie bins sit on the MOT type 1? It will be a bit bumpy, but they will go quite happily.

Is the MOT 1 the same level as the surrounding area? I can't make out from the pictures.

No its not the same level I need to get more. Unless I decide to level it up with something else.

With using all mot1 I'm thinking it looks a bit crap . Also where it's quite lunpy big stones buts it's might be hard getting the bins in and out especially when fall. And it might drag dust /stones and make it look messy.

Depending on how far below the surrounding level it is, I would probably just cement it. It will need to be at least an inch thick, and you won't be able to put anything on it much heavier than bins, but it would get you sorted quickly and cheaply. If you give me the dimensions, I'll work out how many bags you need, but you would be looking at about a 5:1 ratio of sharp sand to cement. You might get away with a weaker mix for just bins to be honest.

BoarBrush · 26/05/2025 19:00

Bugger that just buy some quikrete bags. Nice and easy.

The depth/deep is 3 inches. . The width is 3ft and the length is 7ft 3 inches.

If i do what you suggested im thinking that would be lots of mixing. Then I'm thinking what do I mix it in and what with. How much sand do I add. If I spill it will I be able to get of the paving slabs already there . Also would it be hard to mix. I'm not very strong

You would need approx 2 bags of cement and 12 bags of sharp sand, a wheelbarrow to mix it in, and yes, it will be hard work. The bags are 25kg each, so heavy lifting.

Another alternative might be to just spread sand on and see if you can get some paving slabs from market place or something.

Ultimately, your options are limited. You either need to pay someone to do it, or do it yourself which will involve some effort. Do you have anyone who could help?
