Do you like it?

What gets on your nerves about it?

Does it work?

There are a lot of foods that taste awesome but smell a bit rank while they are being cooked. I grow up in a house like this and found eating directly where things were cooked out me off my food due to smells quite often.

I was always paranoid about cross contamination with raw food being so close to the table I ate off. People would also come to the table early to watch and chat but it lead to "backseat cooking" a lot which got annoying.

30inaclass · 26/05/2025 09:56

Interesting - thankyou.
The hob is along the back wall and I had in my head that the worktop close to the table would just have drinks and ‘ready to go’ food.

Was thinking it would give me more floor space.

Looks pretty good to me 😀

Defrump · 26/05/2025 10:01

No
The dining chairs in the kitchen bit would be annoying
I would walk into them
The kitchen itself is nice

TheNightingalesStarling · 26/05/2025 10:02

Can you access the oven if people are sitting at the table

senua · 26/05/2025 10:02

That's awful.
You would constantly knock into the chairs every time you went into / out of the 'kitchen'.
How would you serve up? Are people not allowed to sit until meals are plated up.
What's the point of the bit of table in front of the hob. It's dead space.
You'd be better off with a freestanding table.
It screams "this house is too small".

senua · 26/05/2025 10:18

The hob is along the back wall
I thought that the whole idea of open -plan is that it is sociable. How is having your back to the room 'sociable'?

Aligirlbear · 26/05/2025 10:21

Looks fine ……. Until everyone is sat at the table and the cook needs to get to the fridge for something or try to get in the oven. Personally for me too close to the cooking area and feels cramped.

abnerbrownsdressinggown · 26/05/2025 10:21

I'd be constantly tripping over the chair legs going in and out of the kitchen.

The only way that set up would work for me is if there were only two of us living there.

4forksache · 26/05/2025 10:23

It looks a very good set up if space is cramped, but I think a normal dining area would be better if possible.

Imperfectpolly · 26/05/2025 10:25

Sorry for the bad drawing. We have a breakfast bar attached to our island similar to what I have drawn. Red is the breakfast bar, blue is the seats.

The island is bigger though so the hob is further away from the breakfast bar. It works well and is nice for socialising or buffet type meals.

Table should be set further into the living room so the chairs in the kitchen should be out of the way entirely.

Table should also be bigger.

PorgyandBess · 26/05/2025 10:26

That looks Ikea has tried to demonstrate a kitchen layout with no thought to practicality

No room to move; the chairs would be a liability. There’s virtually no food prepping area. It’s just too small for that seating arrangement.

Travellingraspberry · 26/05/2025 10:28

I'd definitely be tripping over those chairs in the kitchen!
If you wanted to go for that layout I'd go for a separate table rather than integrated so that you've got the flexibility of pulling it out and use the ends if you want to sit 6 people round it

ScarletBeret · 26/05/2025 10:29

I like my dining table to be further away from the cooking area, which will always be a bit messy as you will have served up and the empty pans will be on the hob.

Ihateslugs · 26/05/2025 10:33

I had something similar when my children were young but the kitchen area was larger so less cramped than in this picture. The lower eating area “stuck out” from the area to the rear of the hob in this picture rather than into the working kitchen area. I created extra storage by resting the table top on a wall cupboard which stood on the floor.

I recreated a smaller seating area in my recently refurbished kitchen, just room for two people as I now live alone. The kitchen designer was not fully convinced but has since said that it looks brilliant and he now suggests them to other clients where there is not room for a kitchen table. I’ll try to add a photo!

I have similar and works really well for us as a family of four.

JDM625 · 26/05/2025 10:53

Is this the only dining area in the house, or is just to be used as a breakfast bar?

Different chair legs would reduce the trip risk. Do you have a floor plan? Its hard to work out but it all looks incredibly cramped.

feelingbleh · 26/05/2025 10:54

The chairs would piss me of. If space is an issue what about a breakfast bar

senua · 26/05/2025 11:46

Islands are a waste of space. Fine in a mansion but not in a smaller house.
The placement of the table by the island/peninsular is better but it's still too near the hob. Maybe an upstand to hide the hob / retain grease splatters might help.

Chewbecca · 26/05/2025 11:51

I would scrap the island overhang and just have a regular table and chairs in the space to the right of the island. You really want to be able to walk comfortably around your table and chairs if possible.

Simonjt · 26/05/2025 11:54

I wouldn’t like it, purely because I can’t stand people ‘helping’ while I’m cooking, people can help by leaving me alone. It also means you have witnesses when you screw something up.

crazycatladie · 26/05/2025 11:55

Second design much better. First design chairs too close to oven and fridge

SugarPlumpFairyCakes · 26/05/2025 11:56

2nd design better.
