What type do you have and are you happy with it?

We’ve been munched at by carpet moths and I’m so over carpet which is impossible to clean properly especially with dogs!

No, but I’d love to! But do you carpet the stairs? I’m a very light sleeper. Would it look a bit odd?

We do. We have wide plank maple and a big rug, which I guess could also be susceptible to moths, but we haven't had any issues.

do you have a wool/ wool mix carpet? Or is it man made but the dog hairs attract moths?

We have engineered wood and love it

Seawolves · 23/05/2025 16:09

I have LVT in my little boy's room and throughout (except my bedroom which is carpeted), it's wide plank wood effect I love it, so easy to keep clean.

Dearg · 23/05/2025 16:09

Yes we do. It’s solid wood, lightly limed oak. I cannot remember the brand but it’s no longer available in the UK so not much help.

I love it - I am asthmatic so it suits me. I have a couple of sheepskins but don’t find it cold.

tinyspiny · 23/05/2025 16:14

My sister has bamboo floors all round the house except the stairs / bathroom / kitchen , she has bedside rugs and it works well , definitely not cold .

Gerwurtztraminer · 23/05/2025 16:18

Engineered oak wide planks, a natural pale colour.. Love them, have it through the whole flat. Easy to clean and looks really fresh & 'modern classic'.

I hate carpet, always looks a bit grubby or threadbare & god knows the dirt that must be in it over time. I do have have a big rug in sitting room and another under the dining table which can always be replaced if they get dirty or tired.. If putting wood upstairs just make sure to get good insulation underneath for sound deadening.

I've had carpet moths before, they ate so many jumpers and lovely scarves. They are in the carpet in the communal areas of the block of flats and are an absolute nightmare to get rid of.

Yes I have the floorboards sanded and varnished it’s not a very big room so there’s not much floor space left. A bedside rug sometimes. In the kids room there is very old laminate and it’s horribly cold , shiny and creaky in comparison but was practical at the time

Bluebellwood129 · 23/05/2025 16:23

Yes, we do in three of the bedrooms - one has a juliette balcony and another has a big slider that opens onto a terrace so carpet would be very impractical in those rooms. We have UFH throughout the house so it's lovely and warm.

Umeshu · 23/05/2025 16:26

Our entire upstairs is the original pine floor boards, sanded and oiled, except the bathroom where we laid new ones as closely matched to the old ones as I could find. Assorted rugs including big fluffy sheepskins beside the beds. Very happy.

HippyKayYay · 23/05/2025 16:29

We’ve got painted floorboards throughout upstairs as my kids have allergies. I think if I was doing it again I’d have them sanded, cracks filled and then oiled/ finished as the paint is chipping badly after a year. But I kind of knew it would do that and don’t massively mind the slightly shabby look!

Not cold though

pippapipps · 23/05/2025 16:29

Yes I have LVT in all the bedrooms, my DS used to get a lot of nosebleeds he was highly allergic to dust mites it turned out, we are all asthmatic also.
Since doing the floors 6 years ago my sons nosebleeds stopped and we don't need our inhaler's as much as..floors are much easier too we've had many a spilt drink on the bedroom floors

thenewaveragebear1983 · 23/05/2025 16:38

I have original boards sanded, they are not cold but they are a bit noisy if you’re downstairs under them. My only complaint is they get very dusty in the gaps, I have to use a paintbrush and vacuum tool to get all the dust out properly every few weeks.

We live in a bungalow, 20 years and counting, and all floors are oak plank or porcelain tiles. Love them, neat, easy to clean, very hard-wearing. Bedrooms are oak, elsewhere tile.

We have engineered wood and love it

It is 100% wool carpet.

Yes, sanded original floorboards and stained white, looks beautiful.

Caspianberg · 23/05/2025 16:46

Engineered oak. We tore up stair carpet and added the same oak with stair profiles so it’s the same through the house

Not cold at all. Ds has a large rug in his to play on, but we haven’t as I haven’t found one yet and it’s been fine the last 2 winters without

Sunnybutchilly · 23/05/2025 16:52

Yes, LVT. No problems. Warm underfoot and easy to clean.
Despite having wool carpets, I wasn’t plagued by moths. They wouldn’t wear out and looked old-fashioned so I changed to man-made.

JDM625 · 23/05/2025 16:52

We recently renovated what had been a derelict property, so we never liver here prior to the renovation.

We have solid oak flooring throughout the upstairs bedrooms and hall. We went with woodpecker brand. https://woodpeckerflooring.co.uk/product/york-rustic-oak/

Due to the renovations, we had a account with a local builders merchants, and they were able to buy the flooring cheaper, than if we'd gone to woodpecker directly! Check the prices for solid vs engineer wood, because in some brands, the solid was actually cheaper!

I love it. I don't find it cold at all, but in the winter, I generally wear socks inside anyways. So much easier to clean than carpets!

York Rustic Oak | Woodpecker Flooring

A traditional solid floor that's rich with honey hues & a medley of plank lengths laden with knots, dark streaks & filled cracks for a classic feel.

We took all our carpets out a couple of years ago then sanded and stained the old wooden floors. We went big on rugs and I think it still feels warm and cosy in our house. Noise does travel a little more easily into the bedrooms from downstairs but it’s never been an issue. We had laminate flooring in two of our previous homes and I was happy with that too.

Oceangrey · 24/05/2025 08:31

On the cold - upstairs it's not cold, we have insulation under the floorboards although had to take them all up to put it in which was a big and expensive job.
Downstairs it can be cold, but I wear slippers in the winter.

Snowinsummer · 24/05/2025 08:49

We have LVT, I’d recommend it - it’s lovely

sashh · 24/05/2025 08:50

I would if I could afford it so I have laminate throughout.

As a child I lived in houses with two smokers and a dog, our carpets stank.
