What can girls who don't like dresses wear to weddings?

Lemonz · 22/05/2025 14:27

My DD, who is almost 10, doesn't really like dresses or tights and would prefer to wear something else to a wedding of a close family member which we'll be attending later this summer.

My first thought is just to put her in a suit like her brother but there are probably other options I haven't thought of. She has very short hair as well so people who don't know her will understandably think she's a boy if she's in a suit. It does happen quite a bit as she tends to choose clothes that were designed for boys anyway. It annoys her a little but as I say it's understandable and she doesn't mind it all that much.

Maybe suit trousers with a blouse? If you have a girl who doesn't like dresses and has been to a wedding, what did she wear?

I obviously don't care at all if she looks 'like a boy', as long as she's smart enough for a wedding, but I just wanted some ideas of options I could discuss with her. If she just wants a suit, then that'll be fine.

What about a jumpsuit? I’m a bit out of the loop with 10 year olds so apologies if this is wildly wrong!

Snorlaxo · 22/05/2025 14:31

Jumpsuit?
Smart trousers and a nice top? (Obviously nice meaning something that she would wear but is “smart” ) A polo shirt is comfortable and can look smart.

ChandrilanDiscoDroid · 22/05/2025 14:31

I don't have a DD like this, but I'm a grownup like this. I don't wear dresses or skirts as I just don't feel like myself in them. My answers would be, depending on season: a jumpsuit or trouser suit, or at a pinch tailored trousers and a nice top. A jumpsuit will also 'read' as female, although I agree with you that that doesn't matter. I'm 5'2" and curvy so never mistaken for male even though I have a pretty butch haircut.

Monsoon and Mango seem to do some nice and appropriate kids' jumpsuits.

Jumpsuits! They can be floaty and feminine, sporty and relaxed, super elegant, tomboy-ish with a girly twist. Etc.

Saisong · 22/05/2025 14:32

At that age mine wore a smart pair of navy shorts, a white short sleeve shirt and navy canvas shoes. Exactly the same as her brother. Nobody cared.

OnLockdown · 22/05/2025 14:33

I was thinking jumpsuit too. They can look smart and aren't overly boyish.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 22/05/2025 14:33

My DD never wears dresses and has a lovely pale men's summer suit that she has worn to a family wedding, school dance and her confirmation. She wears it with a men's shirt. Nobody has ever commented as far as I know.

Does it matter if people assume your DD is a boy? It really isn't 'literal violence' to misgender as some would claim. Anyone who would assume she is a boy is likely to not be someone who she comes into contact with often because those who already know her, know her. So they and their assumptions aren't at all important.

DillyDallyingAllDay · 22/05/2025 14:34

what about some smart trousers with a blouse- if she wants something more feminine, it could definitely work for a wedding.

Comedycook · 22/05/2025 14:34

Jumpsuit

Or some sort of trouser with a nice top would be fine if smart and dressed up enough

Coffeeishot · 22/05/2025 14:39

There is some random Shorts in my search sorry

NotMeNoNo · 22/05/2025 14:43

Jumpsuit or one of the waistcoat-and-trousers co-ords around at the moment. Sorry can only find a picture on Shein but somewhere must sell this kind of thing. link

A jumpsuit could be an excellent option, some of them do look really smart! Don't know why I didn't think of that, thanks.

@BlackAmericanoNoSugar No, it doesn't really matter if people she doesn't know think she's a boy. I said as much. She is sometimes annoyed by it because she thinks it's illogical because boys and girls can wear whatever they like - she can be quite literal about things like that. But obviously in the real world it's very understandable and she doesn't find it offensive.

Loads of lovely jumpsuits and playsuits - no different really to a dress in terms of how cute / smart / dressy / fashionable they can be.

Or tops and trousers sets?

Coffeeishot · 22/05/2025 14:49

There was some really lovely coloured girls :suits" on my search basically .trousers and a blazer you can get a nice top or even the waistcoat trousers a pp suggested,

Coffeeishot · 22/05/2025 14:50

What would she wear for a party ? That's basically what you are after but add a nice jacket or cardigan.

EuclidianGeometryFan · 22/05/2025 14:57

Alternatively, a maxi skirt so she doesn't need tights, with a pretty blouse.

Lemonz · 22/05/2025 14:58

She has a few everyday sort of dresses that she wears with leggings for parties, which she doesn't mind that much, and she actually will occasionally wear a dress over joggers on a normal day. But these are not 'wedding smart' and when we were talking about it she has said that she doesn't want a smart dress, she'd rather wear something else. She much prefers to have something loose on her legs, so a jumpsuit could be right up her street.

I've always thought they look annoying to go to the loo in, but for a wedding that's probably something she can put up with.

Wide leg trousers and a nice top?

RareGoalsVerge · 22/05/2025 15:03

I'd go for smart suit trousers and a sparkly "party" top like e.g. this: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Girls-Printed-Tops-Oversize-Clothes/dp/B0DVZDRYDF/

At this age I found dd, who has sensory issues, a flowy jumpsuit made of absolutely soft cotton jersey. It was comfortable for her to wear and looked appropriately dressed up because of the styling. It took a great deal of digging to find and wasn’t cheap. There were more jumpsuit options of fabric and texture were not a concern.

IchiNiSanShiGo · 22/05/2025 15:09

Next have some gorgeous co-ord sets (top and trousers)
