What can girls who don't like dresses wear to weddings?

My DD, who is almost 10, doesn't really like dresses or tights and would prefer to wear something else to a wedding of a close family member which we'll be attending later this summer.

My first thought is just to put her in a suit like her brother but there are probably other options I haven't thought of. She has very short hair as well so people who don't know her will understandably think she's a boy if she's in a suit. It does happen quite a bit as she tends to choose clothes that were designed for boys anyway. It annoys her a little but as I say it's understandable and she doesn't mind it all that much.

Maybe suit trousers with a blouse? If you have a girl who doesn't like dresses and has been to a wedding, what did she wear?

I obviously don't care at all if she looks 'like a boy', as long as she's smart enough for a wedding, but I just wanted some ideas of options I could discuss with her. If she just wants a suit, then that'll be fine.

Well I've shown her some ideas and she'd rather wear a suit, so that's that!

My DD has always refused to wear dresses.

for weddings she’s won’t jump suits and now would just wear nice trousers and a nice top.

I would normally wear a jump suit to a wedding. I do find children in suits at a wedding a bit weird if they’re not part of the wedding party as it seems overly formal - but go for it if it’s what she wants to wear.

I don't have a DD like this, but I'm a grownup like this. I don't wear dresses or skirts as I just don't feel like myself in them. My answers would be, depending on season: a jumpsuit or trouser suit, or at a pinch tailored trousers and a nice top. A jumpsuit will also 'read' as female, although I agree with you that that doesn't matter. I'm 5'2" and curvy so never mistaken for male even though I have a pretty butch haircut.

Monsoon and Mango seem to do some nice and appropriate kids' jumpsuits.

@ChandrilanDiscoDroid where you get your jumpsuits? Am also 5 2 (ish) and can’t find any that are not too long

My body is a normal length, it's just my legs that are short. I buy regular length ones and take them to my seamstress for hemming. It's a pretty straightforward job with most trousers unless they're very intricate or beaded or something.

Most recently I wore this one from Sezane for a summer wedding.

@Coffeeishotall suits are a colour or other ? I mean navy is better than black for a wedding I think but it will be smart either way

Iloveeverycat · 22/05/2025 18:49

I wore a jumpsuit to a wedding when I was that age

nameXname · 22/05/2025 18:55

Just anything remotely smart that she feels comfortable in.

FFS I wore trousers and a posh silk jacket - dark colour - to go my own wedding. We're still together, many years later.

So long as guests respect the marrying couple's general sense of ideas/decorum, I really can't see what matters. A marraiage is made by vows, not by guests' dress sense or lack of.

nameXname · 22/05/2025 18:59

Should have made it clear, perhaps. My DH was born a man and I was born female. We're both still happy with those designinations.

Lemonz · 22/05/2025 19:04

I never said it mattered particularly, just looking for ideas that I could discuss with my daughter.

If she could really choose anything she'd wear joggers and a long sleeve t-shirt. But I'm not going to let her do that Grin

Jumpsuits are an absolute nuisance when it comes to going to the toilet though.

Well there Is all sorts of colour combinations now, she might have fancied a purple or something

My dd Is 30 and she wanted to wear black combats with chains to a wedding when she was a teenager the "fun" we had trying to find something she would wear !

I really don't find it significantly more hassle than just trousers. I'm wearing a jumpsuit today and I managed to pee multiple times without issue.
