German goodies that you can’t easily buy in the UK

We are taking the car to Germany soon and a friend, who lived in Germany for a while asked woukd I bring her back a bar of Milka if I saw it as she can rarely find it here.
i asked if there was anything else, but ahe said ahe didn’t want to take any more room in our car, even though I insisted it wasn’t a problem.

It is her birthday soon after we get back and we always exchange gifts - although it’s becoming increasingly difficult to think of ideas. It struck me I could make a little hamper of German goodies.
I will have a wander around a German supermarket but to save me having to search through aisles of stuff you can buy everywhere, it woukd be useful to have some specifics to look for.
So if you have spent time in Germany and are now living elsewhere, what are the things you miss and can’t easily find outside Germany? (I know meanwhile you can get everything online but I’m quite taken with my hamper idea so humour me please! )
Thank you

Not sure - but why is she after Milka when it’s everywhere here now?

Dreichweather · 22/05/2025 06:49

Tesco sells Milka.

Tooteefrootee · 22/05/2025 06:53

Mezzo Mix is generally popular (it's like a mix of coke and orange). I would also buy a bag of rye bread mix as that can be hard to get here, and german mustard too. Maggi seasoning. It depends a bit where she is from as well as there are so many regional specialities!

(I adore Fritz kola and club mate- which you can't get here easily- but both can be an acquired taste).

Annoyingly, you can't bring back meat or dairy atm due to foot and mouth, or I.would suggest stocking up on those.

ExpressiveDelivery · 22/05/2025 06:53

I'm not sure but you will need to check what's allowed into the UK, there are temporary restrictions including no meat or dairy.

We always bring back spätzle, currywurst sauce (bottled or Maggi dry packets) and the vacuum packs of bratkartoffeln. And Leibniz chocolate biscuits!

Squirrelblanket · 22/05/2025 06:57

Oh and proper German mustard!

Yes we did buy some of that the other week!

My husband and friend both spent many years in Germany and we go back regularly for a weekend, we always have a massive list of requests to bring back! We introduced our nephews to currywurst and they love it, we have to bring back about ten packets of the sauce each time to pass on to my sister. 😂

Also, proper paprika crisps.

DancefloorAcrobatics · 22/05/2025 07:06

Nimm Zwei sweets
Hanuta (a favourite in my house!)
Yogurette- especially the summer edition!

ladymalfoy45 · 22/05/2025 07:06

Ovaltine chocolate

WildestDreamer · 22/05/2025 07:07

Maybe the Milka here tastes different?
Other brands of chocolate definitely taste different depending on where they are made.

Squirrelblanket · 22/05/2025 07:09

Ritter sport chocolate. You can get those here, but the German supermarkets have a much bigger variety of flavours.

user1476613140 · 22/05/2025 07:12

Ritter Sport!!! Honestly I remember years ago being blown away in Munich at one of their supermarkets and they had a massive stock of this brand of chocolate. It's the best chocolate ever!!!

TheyFuckYouUpYourMamAndDad · 22/05/2025 07:14

GIANT bottles of Maggi Liquid Seasoning. I know you can buy the teeny bottles here, but I use so much of it that I need to buy 3 at a time which annoys me 🤣

I lived in Germany for 14 years and when I finally returned back to the UK, I brought 5 giant bottles with me 🤣

Not along the lines of food but the German version of Boots, DM, had some very very lovely own branded toiletries/ skincare and it was so reasonably priced (in 2011!). I sent my mum a hamper of toiletries from there as a gift when I lived in Germany. Ahhhhhh good times

A copy of Bravo magazine from 1989 and all the Ritter Sports!!!
My dad was stationed there in the late 80s and I have fond memories of spending an afternoon flicking through and using all the stickers while stuffing my teenage face 😁

TakingHavenInTescoExpress · 22/05/2025 07:20

You can get Milka on Amazon.

We’ve been to Germany, Spain and France this year; Milka is cheaper here

minnienono · 22/05/2025 07:24

@Treehugger14

you can buy nearly all of that in Lidl in the U.K., especially alpine week (was last week). Can’t bring any meat into uk due to foot and mouth outbreak either, don’t compromise uk bio security please!!!!

minnienono · 22/05/2025 07:26

And frickedelle are in both Lidl and Aldi year round in the uk

Dingdongavon · 22/05/2025 07:31
