What is this word that has four different meanings?

I was reading an article the other day about a word that has four different meanings and each meaning has a different root but I've forgotten what the word is. I think it's a fairly simple word like 'cake' and I think it might be the only English word that has four different meanings from four completely separate roots.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Right/wright/write:

Right - ok
Wright - maker/builder
Write - make note
Right - direction

And you can use all four in that order to make a sentence.

MyCupOfTea32 · 21/05/2025 05:21

There's also row. It only has three as far as I can tell but row as in a row of houses, row as in to propel a boat with oars and row as in to have an argument are three words with three different etymologies.

Agree with others who have said set- multiple meanings, multiple derivations including one use from old germanic, one from latin via old french and one from middle english

FreddoSwaggins · 21/05/2025 05:23

Bear has multiple meaning (when spelt the same) but not sure it each one has different origins.

Will have to look into it - interesting to hear.

EasternEcho · 21/05/2025 05:24

Well which is it?

I've also Google and got lots of the above (and see some replies are a copy and paste job 🤣). But not found the same word with four meanings and four different origins/roots.

Lots of words above being given with different meanings (and some that just four words that sound the same - so not even the same word!!) No mention of different roots of any though. 🙁

@Whatisthisword you need to remember!! Unless you're having us on!

I promise I'm not having you on! I love etymology and when I read it I thought oh, that's really interesting I'll have to remember that so of course I promptly forgot it. Someone may need to tweet Susie Dent for me 😅
I think PP may have been implying the word is 'right' but it's not.
Thanks for all the suggestions so far.
