Could a seamstress/tailor fix this? Damaged dress :-(

SoapOnARopEeeee · 20/05/2025 19:05

Brand new, only purchased today.

My friend decided to pick me up and spin me around after trying it on to show them, this is the result.

It does fit.

I'm absolutely gutted. I fell in love with this dress and was planning to wear it for my upcoming birthday.

I can't sew to save my life.

Is this salvageable?

A good tailor might be able to, but it won’t be cheap or invisible as the fabric rather than the thread has split.
Is it a little tight or will they be able to take in the seam a little? It may just happen again if the dress is tight and there’s stress on the fabric.

I think this is a fault in the making of the dress. Insufficient seam allowance and it’s just torn away. I’d return it for a refund.

Thank you for the replies

It's slightly snug fitting but not too tight as it is. I would worry that it might become so if its taken in by much 😔

So not a straight forward fix then? Gutted.

It's from T.K maxx so I'm likely not going to be able to find the same dress again. Ugh.

If you can’t replace it vua TkMaxx online and don’t want to return for a refund, You could ask a seamstress to add plain fabric inserts at the seam where it’s split ( if that’s possible?)

SoapOnARopEeeee · 20/05/2025 19:28

I will ask whether that's a possibility. I really hope so! I didn't pay much for it, only £20, but I love it so much.

the fact that the seam is a bit visible may play into the fix. If I were doing this at home I would use that to reinforce the back of the frayed seam with a bit of ribbon or iron-on patch. Then I would do the same to the other side. It looks like there are two layers so the under layer may have to be split and sewn up to facilitate this depending on how it is attached.

a professional seamstress might have a better fix, but that is at least what I would do myself.

dontcomeatme · 20/05/2025 19:34

The problem is the fabric, as soon as you start sewing into there it will come away again, its the thready type fabric (no other way to describe it). A seamstress would need to add a seam to the ripped side and then put a panel underneath. It is fixable though!

TK Maxx have 4, in size extra small, left in stock online. Might be cheaper to buy a new one.

Amazing, that's my size! I don't suppose you could point me to a link? I'm not coming across it on the site

I've found it! Yippee! Thank you so much!

I'm going to see if I can return this one for a refund tomorrow 🙂🤞🏼

I'd return the dress on the grounds that it is badly made, the fabric has frayed. The fabric isn't sturdy enough for the stitching of the seam to hold together, and not enough fabric has been allowed to ensure that the seam stitching had enough strength to support the seam.
It is very poorly constructed, that type of fabric would need bound or overstitched seam edges so this fault was prevented. It's most unlikely that it could be repaired.

Londonmummy66 · 20/05/2025 20:07

I had this with a Me & Em dress that I paid ££££ for. It was a loose style so probably about a foot of extra space in it so not a tight fit at all. It is shoddy construction with tiny seam allowances on a fabric that has no give. In fact the same thing happened with the replacement dress...... I was able to fix it by applying tape to the seams as it was a side stripe style and that covered the problem - even now I sit very still and carefully when I wear it. If there was quite a bit of room in the dress then it could be fixed with a darn seam (?is that how they are described?) and then reinforced with fusible reinforcement. However as you say it is a snug fit I think you need to take it back for a refund. Sorry

Why on Earth would you expect to be able to return a dress that you have ripped for a refund ?? I don't get this 🤷‍♀️

Because it shouldn’t have ripped thar easily. As others have said, the fabric and seam allowances aren’t adequate.

foreverblowingbubbless · 20/05/2025 20:22

Sorry but I think that is ridiculous. It was obviously too tight if it ripped that easily and she said they were messing about. Why should other people bear the brunt of other's stupidity?

Have you tried a Google image search for the dress? You might be able to find a replacement online. But I would definitely take it back for a refund. Snug or not that is a seam split which is likely down to poor manufacturing.

It was not too tight.

I had a pair of trousers from Oliver Bonas that were a wide leg, loose fit. After several wears and a few washes, the side seams frayed. I took them to the shop to show them what had happened and was given a refund. The manager thought there was insufficient seam allowance for the fabric and sent them for a quality review.

I'd buy them again if I saw them, I loved them!

The OP has said it wasn’t tight and although the friend picked her up and span her around, a decently made garment would withstand that. It’s obvious the weave on it isn’t great.

LikeWhoUsesTypewritersAnyway · 20/05/2025 22:50

You can say it was not too tight @SoapOnARopEeeee but from the photos, and from the way it's ripped, it looks and sounds like it was. A well-fitting dress would not have ripped just because someone picked you up. You can buy a new one (though I would get a size bigger,) but I don't think you can demand a refund. The dress hasn't just ripped itself! I don't think the quality is poor, your friend messing about, and picking you up/spinning you around is why it ripped.

DuchessOfNarcissex · 20/05/2025 22:54

OP was there and was wearing the dress, @LikeWhoUsesTypewritersAnyway , I think she'd know if the dress was too tight.

And I can see the photos, and the dress looks tight. Wouldn't have ripped so easily if it wasn't a bit tight. Naff all to do with the 'quality.' I don't know why the OP is getting so offended that people are saying it was tight. You only have to look at the photos to see it's a bit tight - and as I said, the fact it ripped easily confirms that.

I don’t think it looks tight. It just looks like a fitted dress.
