50 and joints beginning to hurt. Collagen or fish oils?

Hi - I've no idea.
Can you help? I don't need HRT yet (blood tests are all green and periods ongoing) but just for a health boost.
Can anyone recommend to me? Even better if I can look it up on Boots or Holland and Barrett!.

I’m 54 and no joint pain. It’s not normal. So have you been checked for other conditions?

Mercurial123 · 18/05/2025 20:31

Yoga and weights can help with joint pain.

OntheupsoIam · 18/05/2025 20:39

HRT totally cured my joint pain.

I started HRT for joint pain at 51. Periods still completely regular.

Oestrogel cured it virtually immediately.

Would you mind sharing the type/severity of your joint pain please?

HRT totally cured my joint pain.

Me too. I had gradually increasing joint pain and the occasional spasm in my back after lots of housework/gardening etc from my late 40s onwards.
I decided to give hrt a go at 54 because I just felt flat and a bit joyless. Within 1 week no more achy joints or spasms which is absolutely amazing.

I also take a spoonful of omega 3 each day and have done for years. It did bugger all for my achy joints 😂

ElidaGibbs · 18/05/2025 21:17

I'm 51, postmenopausal, and my knees started aching almost overnight a couple of weeks ago. I'm really quite stiff getting out of bed in the morning (although they're almost back to normal once I'm up and about). Getting down to kneel on the floor/up from kneeling is also a battle now. It's been so sudden. I remember my mum complaining about aching joints, but she was in her 70s!

I've never been on HRT. I do take cod liver oil but it doesn't seem to be helping with this particular issue. I've had some success with turmeric capsules in the past when I used to get back ache, so I think I'll try them again.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 18/05/2025 21:21

HRT cured my joint pain. I could barely walk in the morning my feet were so painful. HRT sorted it all out. Blood tests are not used to diagnose perimenopause. They are only a snapshot in time…

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 18/05/2025 21:34

Not menopausal myself but have you had your Vitamin D level checked?
As extremely low level of Vit D was the cause of my bones aching.

Had to take a massive dose of Vit D (prescribed by my GP) to get my level back to normal.
I now take a maintenance dose of Vit D 2000iu daily.
No more aches unless I'm coming down with a bad/cold flu or I've gone a bit mental with the exercise

Newmum738 · 18/05/2025 21:47

I’ve tried both. Collagen seems to be working well atm.

HJ40 · 18/05/2025 22:23

Seven seas do a good joints vitamin with collagen that you can get in Boots.

ramonaqueenbee · 18/05/2025 22:27

I'm 50 and was struggling with this. I do yoga 2 or 3 times a week and though it's brilliant for lots of things, it wasn't helping with this. I use the menopace supplement which has both vit d and omega 3 (and lots of other things) and I notice if I don't take it for a while (it's expensive) the pain comes creeping back. But it has sorted it, so assume it was deficiency related. You could try a vit d supplement first and see?

BaronessBomburst · 18/05/2025 22:28

Yoga sorted me out. I've been doing it for a year and it's made a huge difference to my joints and flexibility.

It was primarily in my hips and a bit in my elbows. The hip pain was waking me up at night.

Sonolanona · 19/05/2025 00:48

57 here. My back has been very painful for many years (job related..now have osteoarthritis) but when I hit 50 everything started to hurt,
HRT helps a bit but not a magic cure. Vit D (I was very low) has helped too.

Sonolanona · 19/05/2025 00:51

Pressed enter too soon... more important has been exercise... plenty of it.
And staying slim.. every pound puts pressure on the joints. I now play squash 3 times a week, and it has really helped..yes I still ache, but I ache less!

Pigglingbland · 19/05/2025 01:02

HRT no more joint pain. Like a wonder drug for it.

CrackSpackle · 19/05/2025 01:19

HRT is also good for hair, skin, bone density. I have no joint pain since starting HRT.

tartancarpetslippers · 19/05/2025 01:23

Fish oil. 1000mg capsules three times a day with food.

Brummumm · 19/05/2025 01:26

Hi, thank you all.
Yes - I do a pilates class twice a week and am v bendy. I thought this might be the issue, as I like to sleep on my side with kneecap up to bellybutton, back of my hands curled under my chin.
But it's my little finger joints, thumb and toe joints that suddenly started with pain.

Pigglingbland · 19/05/2025 01:54

I had no idea mine was peri/menopausal. Thought I had gout in my feet (ridiculous I know!) then found myself shopping for a more comfortable mattress due to side & back ache, then my knees & bones just ached & hurt & I literally hobbled. It all disappeared when starting on HRT & I hadn’t even realised that’s what was causing it (& went on it for other symptoms I did recognise as menopausal). It honestly creeps up on you without you realising OP (sorry to say!)

TatteredAndTorn · 19/05/2025 05:05

Blood tests should not be used to “diagnose” perimenopause in women over 45. It would extremely unlikely at 50 that you aren’t perimenopausal and joint pain is one of the classic symptoms.

Pamspeople · 19/05/2025 05:36

Not sure why you're saying you don't need hrt yet, OP. Hrt is simply rebalancing your hormones and is prescribed based on symptoms, not blood tests. And it's not to do with whether you're still bleeding or not - most women start it during perimenopause when they're still bleeding.

Pain in joints/limbs at this age is a very common symptom of the change in oestrogen. Mine was one of my worst symptoms and eased pretty much immediately with hrt to increase my oestrogen levels.

Pamspeople · 19/05/2025 05:42

(obviously if you don't want to use hrt that's fine, everyone makes their own decision about it, but make sure you know what your options are, don't listen to a gp who says they can diagnose perimenopause by blood tests!)

Shocked at so many with joint pain in early 50s. As I said I have none but I do take Vit D3 daily and have done for years. Also eat loads of fruit and veg and walk every day. Do t know if that helps.
